WALKING THE TRACKS
(Sequel to THE TRAIN)
Quatre stared at the door, fearing that Heero might come back in.
When a few minutes had passed with no one entering the bathroom, he finally forced his body to move. The last hour playing itself over and over in Quatre's mind, confusing him. Was he supposed to call what happened; sex, rape, seduction or what? He just didn't know.
It was as he left the restroom that Quatre noticed the 'Out of Order' sign on the door. So that’s why no one came in. It worked out perfectly for Heero, didn't it; he cut the thoughts off before he lost it in this public place, all he wanted was to get home and lock himself in his room. He had to understand what had taken place, before he could face Heero. He hadn't wanted to be touched by Heero, but at the same time, the boy's touches had felt good to him. *No, Quatre....don't think here. Go home, then think.......just get home.*
Not even the sound of someone calling his name could break through the mantra that Quatre whispered in his own mind. *Just get home......just get home.........just get home..........*
"Hey, Quatre!"
*Just get home.*
"Quatre!"
*Just get home.*
"Quatre.......WATCH OUT!"
Arms wrapping themselves around Quatre and yanking him backwards as a car roared by snapped the blond out of his reverie.
"Hey......you need to watch where you are going, man. Drivers in this city are crazy and spacing out like that is a good way to die." Duo Maxwell warned, gazing at the trembling form he was holding in his arms.
Aqua eyes focused on Duo as if seeing him for the first time.
"Duo?"
"Yea......me Duo, you almost roadkill."
"I'm sorry, Duo. I guess I wasn't watching where I was going, not paying attention. Thank you.”
This guy is out of it, Duo thought to himself. He had seen Quatre coming out of the subway station and waved, calling the boy's name. But Quatre had kept walking, not looking left or right, just staring down at his feet. When he had seen his classmate walking towards oncoming traffic, Duo called out again, but Quatre was in a world of his own. Running up to the small blond, he arrived in time to stop the other boy from walking into the path of a oncoming car.
"Well....no problem, just shaved five years off my life." Duo laughed, stepping away from Quatre. "I hate to say this, but you don't look to good. How about I give you a ride home, that way there is less chance of you becoming a hood ornament."
"A ride?" Quatre looked confused.
"Yea, a ride...Quatre." Duo answered, pointing to the motorcycle parked by the curb.
Taking Quatre's silence as a yes, he led the quiet boy to the bike.
"Climb on....Deathscythe and I will see you safely home."
Quatre looked at the boy with his long chestnut braid and violet eyes, wanting nothing more then to fling himself into those arms, pouring out his fear and confusion. Instead, he climbed onto the bike, taking the helmet Duo passed him.
"You named your motorcycle 'Deathscythe'? Isn't that just asking for bad things to happen?" Quatre asked as he put the helmet on, scooting back so Duo could throw a leg over and mount the bike.
"Nah, it just tells people to step out of our way. So, Quat-man.......you got an address for me or should I just drive around for awhile?"
"Sorry, Duo.....it is on Madison Road."
"Wow, that's a pretty ritzy neighborhood." Duo turned to look at Quatre, "Oh, well, hold on tight. This baby and I love to go fast. And since you have my helmet, could you keep ahold of the braid for me........I would hate to get slapped in the face while driving." grinning at the blond over his shoulder.
Not needing anymore prompting, Quatre wrapped his arms tightly around Duo, snuggling his face in the braid and breathing in the wonderful smell of this boy. For a little while he wanted to forget Heero Yuy and what had taken place in the subway bathroom. Closing his eyes as the motorcycle roared into traffic, Quatre wished with all his heart that this part of the day, being with Duo, would never end.
Neither Quatre nor Duo saw Heero standing on the curb, his cobalt eyes focused on the blond Arab......watching his every move.
When Duo turned onto Madison Road, he slowed the bike, asking Quatre, "Where do I go from here?"
"All the way to the end, Duo; my father's house is the only house on this road."
"Whoa...the Quat-man has money...........cool." Duo laughed and headed the bike in the direction Quatre had pointed.
After about a mile, the three story mansion came into view. Duo had only seen houses this big on T.V. and to think that Quatre lived here. In the short time he had known the other boy, Quatre had never given any hint that he came from money. He didn't dress any better then any of the other kids at school and he didn't flash cash around like the other rich kids did. The only hint that Quatre came from money may have been the way he spoke......he was always polite, never talking down to anyone. To Duo, that said class.
Instead of pulling up to the front door, Duo pulled the bike over to the side of the road and parked. Climbing off, he walked over to the wooden fence, then turned and leaned back against it, gazing at the boy still sitting on his motorcycle. From the moment he had yanked Quatre back from the curb; Duo had known something was wrong. There had been an odd look in those aqua eyes, haunted and confused, like the world had become a strange place to him. Duo found himself wanting to take that look from Quatre's eyes, to make him smile and laugh.
He was very attracted to Quatre, but unsure of what the other might say, so he stayed silent.
"Look, Quatre....please don't be offended by this, but I want to ask you something."
Quatre nodded at the violet-eyed boy to do ahead and ask.
"You are Arab, right?" Duo waited until Quatre nodded yes, and then continued, "So, what's with the blond hair and the eyes? Were you adopted or something?"
Staring at the boy with the chestnut braid, Quatre didn't speak for a minute, then he burst out laughing. Just as Duo hoped he would.
"Well....the hair and eye color have to do with an old family legend, Duo. I don't think you really want to hear about that." Quatre replied, taking the helmet off and shaking out the blond hair that so fascinated Duo.
Quatre felt his breathe leave as Duo stepped close to him and whispered, "I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't interested."
Laughing nervously, the petite Arab told Duo about the Winner family legend, "According to the stories I heard as a child, it began hundreds of years ago when a young Bedouin became lost in a fierce sandstorm.............."
"I bet this guy was a prince, wasn't he?" Duo interrupted.
"Do you want to hear the story or not, Duo?" Quatre laughed, tossing the helmet at the braided youth, forgetting for the moment Heero Yuy and the bathroom.
Making the sign of zipping his lips, Duo encouraged Quatre to continue with his story, "Sorry, go on, please."
"Anyway, your right....he was a prince, the only son of a powerful sheik, " The blond said, making a face at Duo. "He was alone in the desert, only his horse by his side. When the storm ended, the young man was lost, he knew that he couldn't survive in the desert long without water. After wandering for two days, the young man fell to his knees, crying out to Allah to spare and return him to his family. No sooner had he finished the prayer then the stallion broke away from him, running over the nearest dune. The prince had no choice but to go after the horse."
"Why chase after a stupid horse.....that sounds crazy to me. I mean him being in the desert and all................." Duo interrupted again, stopping when he saw the glare he was receiving. "Oops.....sorry, Quat-man."
Quatre couldn't help but smile at Duo, the boy had such an eager look on his face. It occurred to him that the other boy really wanted to hear the story and wasn't just trying to humor him. Duo was really interested. Hope started to burn in Quatre's chest, but he wouldn't allow it to burn too brightly, things in his life had just become so confusing.
"The Bedouin prince ran after his horse, only to find that the horse had found an oasis. But that wasn't the only thing in the oasis; there swimming in the water was a young woman. Her hair a pale gold and sea-colored eyes. The young man lost his heart to the mysterious woman and when he had recovered enough, he took her back to his father's tents, claiming her as his first wife. Because of the fact that she returned with the young prince on the night of the full moon, they called her Shahar, which means moon or moonlight. Shahar never spoke a word or revealed anything about herself and a year after becoming the first wife to the sheik's son; she gave birth to his only son. A year after the boy's birth, Shahar walked into the desert and disappeared. The prince wanted to search for her, but the old sheik told his son that it would do no good. That he must be content with the brief loving touch of one of Allah's angels and the precious gift she had left behind."
Quatre looked to see if Duo was bored by his storytelling, but he found violet eyes staring at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Since then, in every other generation.......there has been a son born with blond hair and blue-green eyes. Just one of those wild family legends, I guess." Quatre said as he climbed from the bike, gazing out over the endless pastures of his father's home. Suddenly he felt such a wave of loneliness come over him that Quatre wanted to scream at the heavens. He wasn't close to his parents or his sisters and being at this school only a week hadn't given him the chance to make friends yet. And now the incident with Heero seemed to widen the gulf between him and the rest of the world. If he closed his eyes, he could still feel the other boy inside him, creating feelings and sensations in Quatre's body that he had wanted to feel with Duo.
"Whoa....Quatre, there is a large four-legged beast staring at me. Should I worry, because this thing looks like it wants to eat me."
Quatre looked over to see Duo face to face; somewhat, considing that the animal he was facing was several inches taller then him, with his horse. He let the laughter bubble up inside him and pour out at the comical expression on the braided boy's face.
"I'm..........sor..........sorry, Duo, but.........if you.....could see your .............face." the blond giggled, trying to get ahold of himself. "Duo......meet Sandrock...................Sandrock....meet Duo." Quatre gave up trying not to laugh when Sandrock tried to make a snack of Duo's braid.
"HEY.....horse, back off!! Nobody touches the braid." Duo yelled, yanking the chewed upon braid away from the questing mouth of the large golden stallion. "Keep it up, horsey and I sic Heero Yuy on you."
Duo turned when he heard the laughter stop abruptly and the young boy gasp. Quatre was gazing at him with a look of sick horror on his face.
"Did......you ...say Heero Yuy?"
"Yea.....Heero Yuy, he's my best friend." Duo answered in confusion.
