Part one

The flames of a hundred candles flickered slightly making shadows dance over the pages. The necromancer irritable squinted at the huge book that lay open on the table before him. the words on the ancient parchment wavered then snapped sharply into focus.

{Ad eum qui laefificat meum, qui regit terram. Et pleb tua laetabitur in te.}1

The necromancer’s brow furrowed slightly and he peevishly flicked his shoulder length midnight black hair out of his face. Equally dark eyes narrowed again on the offending text. *This makes no sense. ‘And with that I will rise again to reign upon the earth’?* He glared hard at the passage in question and continued to read.

{The God of the Seventh Gate is Shinigami. His color is the deepest of ebony and his essence to be found in things of death and of antiquity. Beware when passing his Gate for he knows the demons who prowl among the shadows and the territories of the Ancients. Tread carefully and only pass into his presence with the greatest of prudence, when the light of the full moon is strong and Saturn is high in the sky.}

The necromancer read and reread that section, the warnings and fears of the author seeping deep into his consciousness. This was the final gate, his final test. A test that he would pass or die trying to, for there was no honor in leaving a task unfinished.

A shadow, dark as the deepest shadow, watched from beyond the untouched seal of the seventh gate. Smaller shadows darted about its feet but the larger ignored them. He was completely focused on the necromancer.

Brilliant violet eyes, the only hint of color in the shadow, watched with barely contained elation. Suddenly a light tenor voice invaded the perfect silence. “Foolish mortal. Soon the seal will be broken and I will finally be set free.” Insane laughter echoed throughout the farthest reaches of his kingdom.

And somewhere beyond the first gate candles flickered again and the necromancer shivered.

*****

A blood red moon rose full and heavy. The night was still, waiting, almost as if it held its breath. One lone man stood within a glowing circle of power and watched with swiftly mounting excitement as a bright star with faintly visible rings slowly crested the eastern horizon. “This is it. Tonight I will cross the final gate.” He whispered. He lifted his hands to the sky and began to chant.

“Akhkhark, Alal, Gelal, Idummu. Lalassu, Lalartu. Zi Dingir Anna Kanpa! Zi Dingir Kia Kanpa! “2 The necromancer’s voice rose and fell in perfect rhythm and began to echo slightly as the barrier of the gate weakened. His head bowed as though in supplication and his hair draped softly across his face. His voice raised to a shout. “Ia namrasit! Ia nanna Shinigami!”3

At the sounding of the final word he sharply jerked his hands down and the final seal crumbled.

*****

An amethyst eyed shadow waited patiently beyond the gate as the mortal left his carefully constructed circle of power. The necromancer never noticed the heavy clouds that suddenly obscured the moon, throwing the night into utter darkness as he crossed the broken seal and entered the land of death.

He stopped just inside the gate and carefully searched the area around him for hidden dangers. He found nothing but bleak shades of black and gray enshrouding a barren landscape. Relaxing slightly, he decided that the admonitions in the book were only there to deter the unworthy from obtaining the final objective.

He grinned, reveling in his success and, in congratulating himself; he overlooked a deeper shadow detaching itself silently from the inky darkness around him. He did not, however, miss the voice that whispered through the stillness.

“Wufei Chang.”

Wufei flinched and whirled toward the sound. His heart beat rapidly in his chest and his midnight black eyes met shimmering purple. For a brief moment darkness was all that he saw but then it flickered and congealed into the form of a slender young man about his own age.

He studied his approacher carefully. Hip length chestnut hair was pulled into a lose braid. The face was young; the lips were full and twisted into a feral grin. His eyes were large and held just a hint of cruel amusement. His skin, was smooth and pale and Wufei could see most of it through the tight leather pants that laced up the outside of the other boy’s slim legs and the short almost painted on shirt that looked more like webbing than apparel. All of this was topped off by knee high black leather boots and a feeling of power boimitimitless and dark. Wufei’s body tightened in a rush and he had to clear his throat before he could speak.

“Who are you?” He had to admit that, despite his arousal, he was frightened. Very very frightened.

The other boy chuckled darkly. Wufei shuddered at the husky peal of sound that rasped over him like a caress.

“Who am I?” The grin widened fractionally. “Why I am what you summoned.”

Wufei’s eyes expanded to the size of small saucers. “Shinigami.” Wufei breathed and the God of Death laughed again when he felt the terror embedded deep within that slight sound.

“I am. But you may call me Duo. Shinigami is so unwieldy, don’t you think?”

Wufei remained quiescent, doing his best to fight back mind numbing horror. Lavender eyes focused on him and he trembled. Duo pouted slightly. “Come now. It’s not that bad. It will be nice to be back in the realm of the living. But first….” His eyes darkened. “I hunger.”

Suddenly Wufei was caught in strong arms and pulled hard against a taut body. Glowing eyes and pale skin filled his vision and just before teeth sank deep into his vulnerable throat he heard a soft voice whisper, “Foolish, foolish mortal.” And Wufei knew no more.

End Part One…

A/?: should I continue this?? Any ideas, thoughts, comments?? Just lemme know! ^_^
1 Something in Latin. No idea what it means. Not telling you where it came from. If you know what it means then hooray but since I don’t then I will be making something up.
2 As far as I know all Sumerian. Vampire, destroyer, incubus, demon, specter, phantom. Spirit god of the sky remember! Spirit god of the earth remember3 Ot3 Other than the Shinigami, which is self explanatory, I haven’t the foggiest clue what this means. But it did sound good. So….
