Epilogue The Fate of the Team

Kai stood before the stone that marked Xan's final resting place, with a bouquet of white lilies in his hand. Placing it on the grave of the only family he had ever known, Kai wept silently in his heart. He blamed himself for not realising the kinship between him and Xan earlier. He blamed himself for not stopping Xan from fighting Voltaire. He blamed himself for not being able to save Xan at the last moment. He blamed himself for Xan's death. If only Xan was still alive... if only he had cherished the times they were together...

Kai heard some one approaching him from behind. Turning around, he saw it was Rei in his wheelchair. He had been in that thing ever since he was discharged. The doctors said he would recover, but Kai wasn't sure of anything anymore. Especially after what had happened.

"Rei."

"Still thinking about Xan?"

"Yeah... I can't forgive myself still..."

"Learn to let go, Kai. We cannot have him wit with us again, as much as we want to."

"How are your legs?" Kai asked, trying to change the subject.

"They're ok, Kai, how many times do you have to ask me? I'll be walking in a few days."

"Well, I just want to be sure," Kai replied, giving Rei a light peck on the cheek.

"So, what are we going to do after... all this?"

"I don't know. The team's gone, since Max can't beyblade anymore and Tyson wants to return to Japan with Max to help take care of him. But the two of us..."

"I was thinking of returning to the village. I wonder if you want to come with me?"

"I'm not sure, Dreamer told me to find Crystallis."

"Well, I'm willing to go with you instead."

"No, I'll return with you to the village for a while, then we'll go search for Crystallis."

"We'll if it's ok with you, then I'll go along."

"So it's settled then?"

"Yeah."

"Look, Tyson and Max are here," Kai said as he spotted them over Rei's shoulders.

Rei turned around. "Hi."

"Hi," Tyson replied, but his eyes avoided Xan's grave. He still hadn't forgiven Xan, Rei realised. Rei couldn't blame Tyson, though, he could just hope that one day Tyson would forgive and forget.

Max stood some distance away from the group, silent. He was still traumatised by his experiences. Max would flinch whenever someone touched him, except Tyson. Tyson was Max's sole support for him to get through this peroid, that was why Tyson had to return with Max to Japan.

"So you're returning to Japan with Max?" Rei asked.

"Yes. How about you and Kai?"

"I'm returning to China. Kai's decided to come with me."

"Make sure you take good care of Max," Kai said.

"I will."

Kai walked up to Tyson, and for the first time in their lives, they shook hands as equals. Kai recognised that Tyson had been through a lot these few days, and he felt Tyson had matured and changed from the impulsive kid he had seen when they first met. Kai believed in Tyson to entrust him with a great responsibility: to take care of Max.

After all these years of emptiness, Kai had found love in Rei, kinship in Xan and friendship in his team. Kai looked into the navy eyes of Tyson, his friend. The eyes had lost their innocence and carefree nature that Kai had envied so long ago, instead they were laden with maturity and responsibility, which Kai respected. Suddenly, parting seemed so painful for Kai. He, who had never cared about others, now treasured relationships as the most important part of his life. Losing a brother was difficult enough. He couldn't bear to be parted from his friends.

"Kai?" Tyson asked. The insecure look in Kai scared him. It wasn't like Kai.

"I... I don't know when we'll be together again..." Kai turned away as a tear rolled down his cheek.

Tyson put his arm on the shoulder of his friend, as warm tears came from his eyes as well.

"Come on, let's go," Kai finally said, walking away from Xan's grave.

The four friends walked together, enjoying their last times together.

And all my readers as well, I know you exist and even though you didn't review I still appreciate the fact that there are people out there who are reading my work. I also want to thank Fanfiction.net for kindly hosting this, despite the irritating problems with your servers I still appreciate the role you have played in promoting this story. And the creatorsBeybBeyblade, from Aoki Takao to Takara for giving me such great characters to work on. And of course Xan, though entirely my creation, for being a hell of a likable (to me at least) rogue.

Trueangel: And about the sequel... well, here's the deal. If I get 5 reviews asking for a sequel, I'll gladly go ahead with it. I already have two from Rumi-chan and Leah, so you're just three away from it! Threaten, blackmail or con your friends into reviewing! To tease your tastebuds, here's some info on the planned sequel. I just need to iron out a few parts of the plot and I'm all set.
