Chapter 9 The Battle Begins

(P.S. I think some of you might be a bit confused about the timing of the various scenes in the last chapter, so I'll briefly explain. As you remember, in chapter 7, the bladers were returning to the village near the evening when they met Max/en. en. At the start of chapter 8, Titus is back at the village, and it's already at night, and the scene ends late at night with Titus and Mariah. Then comes the scene between 2 unnamed characters, at unknown time. Then we move back in time to the late evening in the poacher scene. At the start of this chapter, it's late at night again, not too long after the Titus & Mariah scene.)

Rei and Kai sat amongst the campfire they had made. Thet had went to search for dry wood, then Kai had a bit of help from Dranzer to light it. The two of them watched the small fire dance on the crackling wood, as they both thought in silence of the events that had happened to them so far - from the start, when Kai had been controlled by Black Dranzer, to how Xan had entered and controlled their lives, then of Kai, Dreamer and Light Dranzer's battle against the powerful Volten. Then, when they thought it was all over, there came the numerous warnings of Volten's return, Max's disappearance and Tainting, Tyson's death, and now this. It was the beginning of the end now. They were in search of the mighty yet mysterious weapon Crystallis, said to be the only thing able to destroy Volten. But Kai didn't even know how to begin searching for Crystallis. All they had with them now were their beyblades.

Kai looked over at Rei, who was lost in his thoughts.

"Rei."

"Hmm? What is it?"

"What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing much."

"You're thinking about those poachers, aren't you?"

"Er... well, a bit."

"Rei, it's not your fault. Those guys deserved to die."

"Maybe, but I feel so... guilty. It's wrong for me to take the law into my own hands. And I... I killed them."

"Rei, Xiaohu died for us so that we could stop Volten. I'm sure he wouldn't want to see you in despair like this."

"But I didn't have to kill them! Yeah, they were criminals, but I could have just... just stopped... them..."

"How, Rei? You were overwhelmed by rage. Nobody could control what you did."

"But I could have controlled my anger!"

"Could you? Human emotion is an unpredictable thing. No one can control it... just like I can't stop myself loving you."

Rei didn't look convinced, but he just nodded.

"Rei, please. It pains me to see you like this. I want to try to help you get over this, but it's impossible for me to do it alone."

Rei sighed.

"I know, and I thank you for it, Kai. I'm trying.,, but it's just so difficult."

"I know it isn't easy. That's why I'm here for you."

Rei rested his head on Kai's chest, closed his eyes and smiled. The two lovers shared a quiet moment together.

"Rei, are you sure you know how to get to the cabin? I don't mean to doubt you, but the woods all look the same to me."

Rei stood up, walked over to a nearby tree, and pointed out a scratch mark near the roots.

"X... Xiaohu made this mark a few years ago, when we were playing in the forest."

"Oh. I didn't notice."

Rei smiled.

"Don't worry. I've lived near this forest for almost my entire life. It's like a city I'm familiar with," Rei said as he walked back to sit down beside Kai.

"Almost?"

"Except the time I was with you and the other Bladebreakers. Those were the best days of my life, Kai, when we fought together as a team, somehow making our way into the World Championships and winning that battle as well."

"Yeah, I cherish those memories as well. I learnt so much from you people... about teamwork, about friendship, and from you, Rei, about love."

"I really miss Tyson, Kai..."

" I miss him too. I regret all the mean things I said to him... he might have been irritating at times, but he was a great friend who was always there when you needed him."

"But Kai..." Rei said in a choked voice. "Tyson's dead..."

Rei broke down into tears and cried into Kai's chest. Kai put his arm around Rei's shoulder, trying to comfort him.

"Rei... I'm sure Tyson is... I'm sure he doesn't want us to cry for him..."

Kai couldn't control himself any more. He bowed his head, and warm tears flowed from his eyes.

Rei and Kai stood in front of the wooden cabin, as the afternoon sun shone down on them.

"Are you sure this place is safe?" Kai asked. "Who knows how old this is."

"If it can withstand Xiaohu playing, it can withstand anything."

Kai walked up to one of the walls to inspect the wood.

"There're no nails or anything to hold the wood together!" he exclaimed.

"Well, yeah. The wood is cut so that the pieces fit exactly into one another, kinda like a giant jigsaw puzzle."

"Amazing. Well, let's go in."

Rei walked into the cabin with Kai following right behind him. Suddenly, Kai tripped over a loose plank and knocked into Rei, and the two of them crashed onto the floor.

"OUCH!!!"

Kai got into a crawling position such that his body was directly above Rei's. Crimson eyes gazed into amber ones, as the boys both breathed heavily.

"You know, we're in quite a situation here. Me on top of you, in an empty cabin deep within the forest..."

"Kai, the main path is just-"

And so Rei and Kai trudged back to the cabin, their hands full of bananas.

"But why would Max be tainted?"

"I'm not sure, but I think Volten has somehow found a way to spread his power indirectly. Dreamer was tainted by Volten, and when Xan got Dreamer, the taint probably spread. Titus told me that the tainting ceremony between angels and devils involved sex, so when Xan raped Max, I think the taint got to Max as well."

"So that's it..."

Suddenly, both boys shot up in shock as they realised the same thing.

"Oh no, Rei!"

"I thought all Volten wanted was to break us up, I'd never realised..."

"I won't let Volten control you, Rei, I won't! Trust me, I'll stop it somehow."

"But... the taint will spread to you, won't it?"

Kai stood up and walked to the door. He sighed.

"I don't know if Volten is that powerful... but we cannot be complacent. We have to find Crystallis as soon as possible... Titus told us it was nearby, didn't he?"

Kai turned back to look at Rei, but what he saw made his eyes widen in horror. Rei sat on the floor, frozen, and his face was ghastly white. Rei's golden orbs were dilated, and he looked at though he was in some sort of a trance. Kai ran forward to his lover.

"Rei, wake up! What's happened to you, Rei don't scare me. REI!"

=Rei POV=

I found myself floating in a dark, empty space. The forest was gone, the cabin was gone, Kai was gone... I felt so cold, so lonely.

Suddenly, the faces of the two poachers I'd killed appeared before me.

"Why did you kill us..."

I suddenly felt overwhelmed by guilt.

"You didn't have to kill us..."

"I couldn't control myself!"

"You're a murderer, Rei..."

"NO! I..."

"Look at your hands, they're stained with blood."

I held up my hands. They'd turned blood red...

"A murderer, Rei, guilty..."

"Please, leave me alone... please..."

"I hate you, Rei. You killed two men in cold blood... you're a murderer!"

It was Kai's voice, condemning what I had done.

"Kai, please, forgive me! Please don't leave me..."

"Rei."

It was a different voice that now reverberated throughout my mind.

"How do you expect others to forgive you when you cannot forgive yourself?"

"I..."

"Face it, you are guilty, Rei."

"No, stop it!"

"Give in, Rei, give in to the darkness... there's no point fighting me."

"You're Volten, aren't you? I won't let you control me!"

"But why not? You have killed, Rei, you are evil."

"I'M NOT!"

"You are evil, Rei, evil like me..."
