Chapter XI

A stray breeze rustled the verdant blades surrounding his head. Slowly he cracked open an eye to reveal a sliver of a dark iris. It fluttered shut again trying hopelessly to recapture the dream of a warm body curled next to his own. He swore he could still smell the coconut-scented shampoo drifting lightly from soft tresses tucked securely under his chin.

“Goku?” Someone called in the distance, “Goku, hey, are you home?”

Reluctantly he opened both eyes to stare at the clear blue sky above him, the dreams finally escaping him. With a heavy sigh he let them flee, knowing he would be chasing them again when night fell.

“Oh, there you are.”

A shadow fell over him, blocking his view of the face of the visitor. Yet he didn’t need eyes to recognize his best friend.

“Hey, Krillen.”

The former monk smiled down on him. “What are you doing laying out here in the grass? I thought you would be training at this time of day. I came by to see if you wanted some company.”

The Saiyan’s shoulders moved a bit in what was meant to pass as a shrug. “Eh, I didn’t get much sleep last night, but,” he added with a lop-sided grin, “we can spar if you want.”

Krillen chuckled, shaking his head, “Train, not spar. You would mop the floor with me and you know it.”

“Oh, come on, you’re a great fighter.”

If the comment had come from anyone else, he would be certain he was being patronized, but coming from Goku he took it as a compliment.

“If you say so.” He took a seat next to his friend. How many times had they sat like this, he wondered. Countless; the answer came from the back of his mind.

He smiled to himself, thinking back on old times. So much had changed, yet so much had stayed the same. They were a long way from delivering milk cartons, he thought with a grin, but he hoped they would never outgrow sitting just like this, on the ground, staring up at the sky.

“Where’s Goten?” he finally asked.

“He’s at school.” Goku answered, stretching his limbs.

“At this time of day?”

“Yeah, he’s staying behind to work on a project for finals. He’s trying really hard to bring his grades up, and I think this project is worth half a million points, or something like that,” he yawned, “Anyway, he’s been staying after to work on it every day this week.”

“Hm, I thought he would be out with Trunks or something,” he commented off handily, “I didn’t think he was the ‘scholarly’ type.”

“I didn’t either,” the taller warrior admitted. “I thought Gohan was going to be the brains in the family, but all of sudden Goten has taken an interest in school.”

“Well maybe he’s trying to catch up to Trunks, you know, since he’s going away to college soon.”

Goku frowned.

“Maybe.” He paused a moment, “I don’t think he’s very happy about Trunks leaving, and to be honest, I don’t think Trunks is happy about it either.”

The shorter man looked surprised. “What? But that’s all I’ve heard about. 18 went shopping with Bulma the other day and she said that all Bulma could talk about was Trunks being accd ind into Pritchard University. I thought he was excited about it; that’s a hard college to get into. He should be really proud of himself.”

“Yeah, I guess he should be, but—,”

He trailed off here, eyebrows knitted down as if in thought. It was rare sight, so Krillen was a little worried and asked, “You all right there, Goku?”

“Fine,” he grinned, shaken from his thoughts, “Never mind. So, did you want to train?”

“Sure,” the monk answered still a little concerned for his friend, “but if you’re not up to it, I need to deliver these invitations to Master Roshi’s house.”

“Invitations?”

“Yeah, for Trunks’ birthday, remember?”

“Oh yeah! It’s on Sunday, isn’t it?”

Krillen nodded, “From what I understand, Bulma is going all out this year, since he’s also going away for school. She always has the best parties,” his voice picked up eagerly, “I can’t imagine what she’s got up her sleeve for this one.”

Goku nodded, looking distracted again. His lips were turned down slightly.

“Goku?”

“It’s nothing,” he shook his head and got to his feet, “let’s go to Master Roshi’s I haven’t seen him in a while.”

But it was all ready too late; Krillen was staring at him point blank now, concern written plainly upon his face. “Goku,” he repeated firmly, “what’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.” The Earth raised Saiyan stated, flashing the classic Son smile, “come on, let’s go. Maybe, we can get something to eat while we’re over there. I haven’t had a decent meal in weeks.”

Krillen raised a brow, uncertain of his childhood friend’s behavior. He had thought Goku was more or less back to normal since Chichi had tragically died. But now he wasn’t so sure. Suddenly he heard an odd grumbling noise coming from the direction of the taller man.

“Oh, heh,” Goku grinned a little embarrassed, “guess my stomach likes the idea too. Come on, Krillen, I’m starved.”

Somewhat reassured, the monk returned the grin. “Okay, let’s go. But you get to try to take Master Roshi away from his dirty magazines, I did it last time.”

Laughing, Goku nodded. Without another word they blasted off towards the sky, making their way towards the Turtle Hermit’s home.
