Chapter 11
Trant pushed his horse hard so not to lose the rider in front of him. He turned at looked at his partner. He wondered why Treize had picked her to go with him. She didn’t seem the type. She dgeddged her horse and kept up with him. She said nothing more about the situation.
“Where will we stay the night?” she asked.
He grinned as he glanced over at her. “With luck, with them.”
Her eyes opened wide. “Then we could get them and the statues at one time. You are a genius!”
“Then we take them to Treize and we spend the rest of the winter warm and comfy.”
She glanced over at him, then returned to the trail.
They didn’t speak again until they got closer to the small house, nestled in the woods. They stopped and watched Duo walk across the yard, to the house.
Middi Une shivered as she watched. She put on a good front but she didn’t like this one bit. Taking these people to Treize was not what she wanted to do. She thought getting the statues were the first priority. Killing them would be easier, but he had insisted they be returned to him. He had muttered something about Maxwell needing to be taught a son.son. They were just going to slow them down. She glanced over to Trant who seemed to be lost in thought.
“So, Middi,” he said, startling her out of her thoughts. “What made you decide to work for Treize?”
“An ill father and little brothers to support. And,” She said , slyly, “ I like the money .”
He nodded and said, “Let’s go it’s been long enough.”
He kneed his horse to get it to move through the snow to the house. She followed behind him.

Heero Yuy was restless. He had a bad feeling about letting Hilde go back alone. He had no fear that Duo could protect her or that she could even protect herself, but he had a nagging feeling he had missed something. He stared into the fire burning rapidly in the fireplace. No matter what he did, no matter how many times he tried to shake this feeling it wouldn’t go away. He was safe, but how safe were duo and Hilde? What of the Indians? What if Treize decided to attack them in the storm and……… His thoughts were interrupted by Relena leaning down and handing him a cup of coffee.
“Penny for those hard thoughts, Heero.”
He looked at the cup and then up at her. “Huh?”
“Your thoughts. You’re a million miles away.”
“Oh, sorry.. I was thinking about. …….”
“Your friend Hilde and her new friend.” She said softly.
He blinked and looked back at the coffee. “How did you know?” he asked, raising his eyebrows at her perceptiveness.
She smiled. “I just know these things. Call it intuition.” She knelt down in front of him. “You fear you have abandoned them, don’t you?”
He nodded slightly.
“I think you should go to check on them. I would like to go also, tho, Heero.”
He frowned Slightly about to open his mouth in protest. Her fingers reached up to stop him.
“NO, When should we leave? Daybreak? What items should be take with us?” She asked as she stood.
Heero watched her in bewilderment, as she turned from him and hasted from the room. He looked at his cup of coffee and sipped it. He sighed, almost relieved she had wanted to go a long and terrified at the same time. He finished the coffee and stood intending to follow to the kitchen, but she returned a moment later with her arms full of blankets. She dropped them on one of the chairs.
“I know we will need warm clothes. It will be cold out . Will we need some food? “
He listened to her as she talked to him, nodding every once and a while.
Soon everything was gathered and ready to be packed in bed rolls ,and saddlebags.
Relena smiled as she stood looking over the items for the trip. She then turned to Heero.
“We should get some sleep.” She said as she reached for his hand. He placed his in hers and they made their way upstairs.

Zechs was angry. He couldn’t believe that Treize was trying to betray him. And with such lengths! Hiring people to try and kill him. He growled as he slammed the sheriff’s office door. He glared at the snow blowing and swirling in front of him. He was angry at Treize , himself and even the weather. He stomped down the board walk to the Sleepy Eye Saloon. He needed a drink before he went home to face his wife. She would not take kindly to all of this. He had to tell her before she heard all this from some meddling townsperson. He pushed open the doors and stepped intro the room. It was dimly lit, giving it a gloomy cast to it. He sighed as he walked up to the long mahogany bar and leaned on it. It was empty, except for the two drunks that passed out in there every night. He wanted to kick them out but he had no desire to haul them down to the jail and it was cold out. He looked at Joe the bartender and said, “Whisky.”
Joe nodded and poured him a shot as Zechs threw a silver dollar on the bar. As soon as Joe was done pouring , he snatched up and drank it down in one swallow. He slammed it down on the bar and nodded. Joe poured another ,and out came another silver dollar. Zechs looked at this drink for a few moments watching the amber liquid in the shot glass. Then he picked it and drank down in one gulp. He set it down and turned toward the door.
He said softly as he started to walk toward the door, “I’d close up early, Joe. Looks like the crowd’s stayin’ in tonight.”
Joe grunted as Zechs stepped back into the cold and walked down the street to his house. He grasped the collar of his sheep skin coat and pulled it closer to his neck, so the snow wouldn’t swirled down his collar. He sighed as the cold air cooled his temper and the whisky warmed him. He knew he could now face his wife and tell her everything . She would be angry he hadn’t told her before but she would stand by him and that’s what he needed more than anything right now. His mind was reeling with disappointment at the man he thought was his friend. They were friends no more. He had to make the decision to break ties with Treize or be killed. He had no other choice.
He had to talk to Heero Yuy, after he told Noin his plans.
