The Ride
Chapter 14.……..
“Schibecker, here. Hilde!! Where are you? What do you mean you want tell me? And What?! You got married in Los Vegas?? “ His eyes narrowed, “Are you doing this to spite me? Because of your mother? I’ll get the marriage annulled!” He shouted into the phone. There was a pause and then he laughed. “ You win. What do you want?”
Heero stepped from the car and stood by the door, listening to the conversation.
“You want to meet and discuss some things? You and your husband are in Vegas, correct?”
There was another long pause. “Hmm. There is an old ghost town a few miles to the south. Yes, go there. There’s and old motel there. We’ll meet you there. What? I wouldn’t do that , baby. Alright. I’ll come alone, No “goons” as you call them. Heero and his secretary are with me. Is it ok that they come along? Very well, it will be us three. We’ll be there in about 6 hours. Yes, well, talk about your mother and what hned ned to her.”
He closed the phone and raised it above his head to smash it to the ground.
Heero reached over and stopped him. “If you do that , sir? How will we get in touch with them or any one else. She has your number.”
He lowered his arm and looked at Heero. “Yes yes you’re right.
“Yes, sir. We should get going if we are to meet them as you planned.”
The older man nodded and climbed into the car.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hilde closed the phone and handed it to Duo. “Ok, We’ll need to rent a car. And I’ll pay for this .” She said as Duo reached for his billfold.
He opened his mouth to protest, but she raised her hand to silence him. “No, you have done everything for me. It’s my turn.”
Duo shrugged, then smiled. “ok if you say so, but this time only!”
She giggled and hugged him. “Let’s go get that car and go out there . We can make sure none of his “goons “ are there before us.”
“Hthatthat is a good idea.”
“Where is you gun, Duo?”
He looked at her, frowning, “In the truck, why?”
“You may want to bring it along. You may need it.”
“But Hilde. He’s your dad.”
“And he’s a serial killer too, don’t think of trusting him.”
He nodded as they walked to the car rental place . After a few minutes the car was rented and they were walking to the parking lot to find the vehicle.
Duo took the keys and they drove out in the direction her father had said.
~~~~~~~~~~
The town was a true ghost town. It actually looked and felt like a old movie set. The main street was dirt and the walks were all rotting wood.
Duo parked the car at the outside of the town and got out. Hilde stepped out and walked arouhe he car to stand by him.
“Well, what do you think? Are we first?”
She grasped his hand and said , softly, “Yeah, I think we got here be for daddy’s goons did.” She pulled on his hand , “Come on, let’s check this place out . We have to have an edge if we’re going to beat him.”
They walked into the ran down town, looking at the dilapidated buildings, trying to pick out which one was the hotel. As the y walked they tried to decided what building was what. Even though, the out come of this meeting could bad,bad, they had high spirits. Duo reached into his pocket and grasped the gun Hilde had insisted his take with him. He grimaced slightly, hoping he wouldn’t have to use it. He sighed. She knew the man better than he did s o he had to take her word for everything. He hoped this could work out with out a fight, but he had a bad feeling that it wouldn’t. He pulled the gun and looked at it. He stopped Hilde and looked at her.
“Here. You keep this.” He said, handing her the gun. She looked at him with questioning eyes. “If I have to get close to him, it won’t do me any good. If you have it you can protect yourself with it. Remember, Heero will be with him, and unless your friend Relena could change his mind, he could still be on your dad’s side.”
She nodded at Duo’s logic. “Yes,” She replied , “You’re right. Relena is a excellent pursuer, but Heero is a tough cookie.” She looked at the gun, turning it over in her hands., then slipped it into her pocket.
Duo watched her for a minute then asked, “Do you know how to use one?”
“This?” She answered, patting her pocket. “Yes, I do.”
Duo nodded and they continued to the broken down hotel. The air was hot and stifling, as the dust from the street rose with each step they took. As they entered the hotel, they stopped and looked around the building. It was falling down in places and there were holes in the oor oor boards.
“Man, do you think this place is safe?”
Hilde shrugged her shoulders and stepped in. “I don’t know but here’s where well meet him. Come on.”
They didn’t have to wait long before the father stepped in. Duo was surprised at the tall handsome man. He looked over to Hilde noting t res resemblance. He could have imagined what her mother had looked like.
“Hilde!” He cried out as he looked over at her. He took a step toward her , but stopped as he looked at Duo. “So this is your Husband, eh?”
Duo reached out and grasped Hilde’s arm as the man’s cold dark eyes looked him over. He had never felt fear until this moment when this man stared at him. He was like he was dead in side. He had no emotion looking back at you. His face registered it but his eyes held none.
Hilde glared. “Stay where you are. Don’t come close.”
“Oh, now, baby don’t be that way. Daddy just wants a hug from his little girl.”
“No. I said stay back. I know what you are and how you cover it up.”
His face dropped the smile and he glared at his daughter. “You are just like your mother. You judge me just like she did.”
“No, I don’t. I have seen what you are.”
“YOU LITTLE BITCH!” He shouted.
Duo pushed Hilde behind him, and whispered to her, “Remember the gun, babe.” He stood his ground as the man came barreling toward him. He grasped Duo and shoved him toward the wall. They struggled a few moments and then began to throw punches at each other. The older man laughing insanely as he hit Duo again and again. He never stopped laughing even when Duo would connect a hard hit.
Heero had entewithwith Relena and moved over to Hilde’s side. “Come on, Hilde, You’re coming with us. Leave these two to fight it out.”
Hilde turned to Heero, venom in her voice. “You’re still his patsy aren’t you? Get away from me. I’m not going with you or him. My place is with Duo. Not some killer and his lap dog.”
Relena spoke up, “Hilde, that’s not fair.”
She turned to her, ‘Oh, isn’t it? He’s been cleaning up this messes for years. FOR YEARS!! I don’t want to hear any excuses from him.” She said as she pointed a finger at Heero. “You are just as bad as he is.” Her eyes wandered back to the fight between Duo and Her father. She watched intently as Duo began to get the upper hand on the older man. Then she saw a bright shiny object slip into her father’s hand.
She screamed, “DUO!! LOOK OUT!!” But it was too late, Duo didn’t see the knife until it slid into this gut and was pulled out .
“NO!!!” Hilde screamed as she watched her father push it in again and again. Duo’s face contorted with shock and pain, her father pushed him away.
He giggled as he watched Duo drop to the ground. He gleefully shouted, “I WIN! I WIN!”
Then he kicked the downed man and looked up at his daughter. “You’re next,” He said, as he smiled at her.
Hilde’s hand slid into pocket that held the gun that Duo had given her. She looked at Duothe the ground. She could barely see him moving. His hands were clenched around his lower body as the blood seeped through his fingers, leaving a puddle on the wooden floor.
“You fucking bastard.” She whispered. “You will pay for that.”
The gun came out of the pocket , the safety was switched off, and it was held out in front of her. “”You will pay.”
He giggled again as he took a step forward.
“Stop.”
More giggling. She saw Heero move out of the corner of her eye. “Keep back , Heero. I’ll shoot you too. I can use this weapon and I will. Relena , I suggest you grab Heero and get out. Some one call for an ambulance.” She glanced over to Duo who was moving less than before.
Relena grabbed Heero’s arm and pulled gently , “I think we should go.” She whispered to him. “Let this happen.”
Heero looked from Relena, to Hilde , to the crazed man, nodding reluctantly and letting Relena pull him away.
Hilde watched as her father stepped forward toward her. She saw Duo’s blood on the knife he held in his hand. It was on his hand and his shirt sleeve.
“You killed him. Just like you killed my mother. You have killed all I have ever loved. Now I’ll put you out of my misery. “ She said, with a low, calm voice, as though it was something she did everyday. She raised the gun as he stepped one step closer. She looked up into his face and no longer saw her father, just a crazy man with blood lust in his eyes. Her eyes never left his face as her finger tightened on the trigger and she pulled it back. The gun jumped in her hand 6 times as she emptied it into the man standing before her. She saw his face register shock, then smooth out as if he was happy and relaxed. She watched the knife fall from his fingers as he dropped to the floor.
“Good bye, Daddy.” She said as the gun dropped from her fingers and she stood staring at him. It clattered on the wooden panels , breaking her from her trance. She gasped and ran from the gun and body of her father to Duo.
She dropped to her knees and reached for him. She pulled his head to her chest and sobbed uncontrollably as she rocked back and forth, holding him tightly. She chanted as she sobbed. “Please don’t be dead,ase ase don’t be dead. Oh god , I wish they would hurry.”
Epilogue:
Hilde stood in the hall way of the hospital never the emergency room. She stood nervously as she waited to hear about Duo. The helicopter had landed just a few minutes after she had shot her father . They rushed in and confirmed to Hilde that Duo was alive but in terrible shape. They told her what hospital they were flying to and told her to meet them there. She watched as they took him away and stood out side in the hot dusty air, slightly in shock/ Relena had drove with her to the hospital because Relena feared she couldn’t do it in her state.
Hilde sighed, she hadn’t been in a good condition to drive. She could hardly make it to the emergency room. Now she stood out outside the door, waiting to know if he survived the flight.
After a few moments a doctor came out. “Mrs. Maxwell? “ he asked , looked at her.
She nodded.
“He’s going to surgery. It’s going to be touch and go for a little bit ,but we’ll do our best, ok? He‘s got several stabs that nicked a few organs and they need to be repaired. One was we believe his spleen that took the brunt of the attack. It will have to be removed. I’ll keep you informed ok? Some one will take you to the second floor waiting room. ”
She watched him leave , then sagged, her heart heavy. Relena came to her side and touched her shoulder.
“Come on, let’s go upstairs and wait , ok?”
Hilde nodded as Relena lead her to where the nurse was standing.
Relena looked over at Heero who nodded slightly, then he was gone. She knew where he was going and what he was doing. A body had to be taken care of and questioned answered. As Hilde’s employer, he now would field questions fro her until she was prepared to do it herself.
Several hours later, the doctor came into the waiting room, looking for her. She stood as soon as she saw him. He smiled at her and took her hand.
“He’s in recovery. Everything went well. He’ll be in room 234 in about a hour. You can go down there and wait , but I suggest you get yourself a bite then go there. He’s going to be ok, Mrs. Maxwell. He’s strong. He’s g tg take some time to recover but he will do fine.”
He released her hand and turned away. Hilde sighed, then smiled.
She pushed the door to room 234 and stepped into the semi darkness. She made her way across the room past the empty bed, to the occupied one. She looked down at the man sleeping peacefully, and gently brushed his bangs from his face. She slid into the chair beside the bed and sighed. Her fingers brushed gently down the side of Duo’s face, feeling the roughness of his beard coming through. She slid her fingers down to his throat , then she stopped, feeling his heartbeat on his warm skin. Tears trickled from her eyes as the whole situation rehit her. She silently sobbed and let them fall.
Duo felt something tickle on his neck and he moved slightly trying to move the object away. When it didn’t move, he opened his eyes slowly.
“Hilde.” He whispered, looking over at her.
She blinked and looked at him, her face still wet with the tears she had let fall.
“What happened?” He whispered again.
“He’s gone. I shot him after he stabbed you.” She reached for his hand, grasping and squeezing it. “You lost your spleen, Duo. He made you lose it. “I’m sorry.”
He blinked . “Is it vital? Will I die with out it?”
She shook her head.
“Ok, then don’t feel bad about it, Hilde. I took the chance when I fought him.” he mumbled softly, as his eyes drifted shut. “I love you,” came out as a soft whisper before he fell a sleep again. Hilde smiled and continued to hold his hand.
A couple of weeks later, Duo was sitting on the bed waiting to get released , as Hilde packed the belongings he had. He was only allowed to go home if he did nothing. He could walk and do small physical things but nothing else.
Hilde turned as she heard Duo let out a big sigh.
“Duo? What wrong?”
“Oh. Nothing. Well, everything.”
She came over to him and sat on the bed beside him.
“Duo, what is it?”
“Man, this is going to really put a cramp in out love making!” He replied as he winked at her.
“Oh, You! “ She giggled as she slapped him lightly on the arm. “I should have known!”
He wrapped an arm around her, and smiled . “Hey, I got you to come over here , didn’t I?”
She nodded and looked up at him as he leaned down as kissed her.
The door opened and a loud “Hn” was heard, then a small cough. They two on the bed looked up and saw the two at the door.
“Do you two ever quit?”
Duo kissed Hilde again and said ,”NO!”
“Well, come on , your transportation is waiting. And you have been released.”
Duo slid off the bed with Hilde’s assistance and sat in the awaiting wheelchair. Heero moved behind and started to push the chair. Hilde followed the three of them out, checking the room. As soon as she came out she stepped up beside the chair and reached for Duo’s hand.
“So, where are we going?” Duo asked, unsure where the y would reside.
“Our house,” Hilde replied, looking at him slyly.
“We have house?”
“Well, it’s temporary, till we decide what to do. I did inherit my father’s company and well, I’m in charge. And I will need a good man to help me run it. Or do you want to go back to driving truck?” She shrugged. “it’s going to be up to you, Duo. What ever you want. If trucking is what you want, I’ll turn the business running over to Heero, and go with you. “
Duo said nothing as they moved down to elevators and the lower floor.
When they got to the main floor and headed toward the door to the street, Duo cleared his throat.
“Hilde,” He said as they pushed out into the bright sunlight and the business of the streets.
She looked over at him, “Yes, Duo?”
“This house…… is there room for kids….. Someday? And I can help you, not just sit on the board and be your husband?”
“Yes, to both your questions.”
He nodded. “You won’t fire Relena and Heero?”
She shook her head, “Absolutely not. They are here to stay.”
“And as soon as I get better , we can work on having those kids?”
She smiled and helped him out of the chair. “Absolutely, Duo, Absolutely!”
He leaned down and pulled her into his arms and whispered, “I can’t wait.”
