Scene Fifteen
It had been several days since the duel. En felt that since then, people had been less intimidating towards her and even started greeting her in the hallway. Feeling more confident, En did not mind when they joined her and Bardock's team at the table and exchanging tips and tricks on training, and what to expect on planetary conquests. Seripa seemed quite happy to see this new development and Toma has accepted her as part of the team, exchanging playful punches at the table every now and then. Of all people though, Bardock was still on her wary list. She always showed up before Bardock at the training room (Seripa has shown her how to use the scouter, though still grumpy every time the alarm went off earlier than her usual time to get up,) and was obedient throughout the training, even if he got a bit impatient and used curse words every now and then, she never said more than the replies that were deemed necessary. Her attacks were getting more accurate and powerful, her focus a lot sharper and the reflexes had improved immensely since day one. As soon as Bardock announced the training was finished for the day though, she would turn around and dash off immediately without saying another word.
After another intense training today which they had revised everything from punch, block, take down, lock, piledrive, toss, ambush, kick, energy blast, body slam, flight, head butt, elbow attack and knee kick, and lastly, the Double Axe Handle, Bardock said to her.
"Your final test will come tomorrow, Seripa will take you to a new training space, if you pass it, it means you're ready to come to missions with us."
"Who will I fight against?"
"Technically, no one, well, not anyone really."
"Huh?"
"Yeah, it's been a tradition that has been going on, even I had to go through with it, and like the tradition I'm not allowed to tell you, but we will be there to supervise you in case things get out of hand."
"Out of...hand?"
"I said too much. Out you go brat, see you at dinner." Said Bardock as he left before En did.
En stood there, not liking this new development. Bardock poked his head back again and said.
"If you don't hurry up I'll tell Seripa you sucked today."
With a huff, En flew out the door and ran in the hallway, leaving Bardock behind. After the wash up, she met the team back in the cafeteria. For the first time, she felt so nervous she had difficulty finishing her food.
"You gonna eat that?" Said Toma as he swiped a piece of stuffed dumpling from En's plate. Noticed that she didn't try to swipe any food off his plate, he said to her.
"If you don't eat enough, your training today will all be for nothing." Said Toma.
"What if I don't pass?"
"Then you'll be stuck with me in that training room." Said Bardock as he chomped down a meat bun while grabbing a piece of raw fish fillet.
En looked at him with her brow cocked high, then swiped a piece of grilled steak off Bardock's plate and wolfed it down herself.
"Brat! That was uncalled for!"
"They're out of steak." Said En in between big chunks of meat.
"That's enough from all of you, it's getting late En, go and have another serving and we'll head back to the dorm." Said Seripa.
When they were in their bunks, En popped her head out from hers and asked Seripa.
"Seripa."
"What? Trying to sleep here kid."
"Why won't anyone tell me?"
"Get used to it kid, even we don't get all the datas we need before we get sent to strange planets. It's all part of it, now go to sleep!"
"Has anyone ever died from it?"
"A few, very rarely though. You're not stupid enough to die from it, that's all I'm going to say, if you don't go to sleep now I'll make you sleep outside!"
"MMmmgh." Answered En with her face in the pillow.
The next day En followed Seripa to the examination room. She was a bit relieved to see Bardock there, since he was her trainer he would know all about the regulations and to keep things from going out of hand. She gave Bardock a nod and looked anxiously back at Seripa. Toma arrived later on as well with Dr. Malaka, and oddly enough, Purika was with them too.
"Thanks for being here guys, doc, Purika, have you brought what we've asked with you?" Asked Seripa.
Purika whipped out a small sealed bottle and said. "Here it is."
"Thanks, we'll see you in a sec."
Purika? What the fuck is that guy doing here? Questioned En, the appearance of the unpleasant youth did not help with her being very nervous already, so she looked back at Seripa, wanting to know what was going on.
With Purika out of sight, Seripa turned and said to En.
"We have to be on good terms with everyone, if we have any conflicts, it has to be resolved. I still don't like Mema and his men, but we don't want to be the centre of gossip all the time. Now go in there and show us how much you've learned, we'll be here to make sure nothing bad happens." She said as she gestured En to go into the room. En looked back at her team, Toma seemed confident and cheerful, Dr. Malaka wished her the best, Bardock had his arms crossed and was casually leaning against the wall, lazily looking back at her.
"Hurry up kid, I'll be an old man by the time you drag your ass in there." Said Bardock.
After throwing him an evil glare, En turned on her heels and walked into the entrance. She heard the door close behind her. This room looked weird, the floor was gone, but seemed to be filled with dirt instead, the walls were still there but the ground was covered with random shapes and sizes of rocks. And then she saw Purika, who seemed to just have finished planting something on the ground. Don't tell me my opponent is him! Thought En. Purika stood up, he seemed to be waiting for something to happen. Within a few seconds, En noticed that five different spots on the ground in front of him began to move.
"What the?!" Gasped Seripa as she looked at the screen that showed the room that En was in.
En crouched down into a fighting stance, her eyes focused. She was not mentally prepared for this when she saw five Saibamen grew out from the ground, slimy and screechy as they broke free from underneath the dirt. En lost her composure and took a step back, her tail fluffed up and her eyes widened.
"Saibamen! Attack that kid!" Yelled Purika as he made a dash out through the exit, leaving it locked behind him.
They all leapt towards her at once like vicious piranhas in the air with their blade-like claws and feet. En screamed as she darted around them in a panic.
"What the fuck?! I specifically told him that we only needed one! That treacherous bastard! I'm stopping this test!" Cursed Seripa as she slammed down the emergency button. The door remained where it was. "What the?!" She pushed it a few more times and nothing happened.
"The door's broken! It's not moving!" Shouted Seripa as she tried to blast open the door with no success, for it was built to prevent enemies from breaking in. The whole team started blasting it with energy blasts continuously, but each move was merely denting it a little at a time, barely scratching the surface. Dr. Malaka dialled for the maintenance department as they continued to break in.
"En! En can you hear me? Fuck even the intercom's broken! Someone's messed with the system!" Cursed Seripa.
Meanwhile, En tried to find an opening to escape from the ferocious little humanoid green beasts, she was already suffering from a few abrasions from their razor-sharp claws and feet, but they did not leave any time for her to power up. They started to look like blurry shapes to her after a while, one after the other, it was not long before she realised that she had resorted to hiding behind the rocks to avoid being attacked. Then one of them pounced onto her and wrapped its limbs around her torso, clamping her so hard it was impossible for her to break free.
"Oh no! It's going to self destruct on her! En! EEEEN!" Shouted Seripa, hoping like Hell that En would hear her.
En struggled but with each attempt she found herself being clamped harder. With an angry roar she bared her fangs and bit down, hard, on the Saibaman's head and continued to gnaw viciously like a mad dog. The Saibaman screeched in pain and shook its head from side to side but still remain clamped onto her. En continued to gnaw until she took a chunk out of its head and spat it out in the opposite direction. The Saibaman finally loosened its grip on her and sprung away, holding its head in pain. When the other ones witnessed the happening, they all huddled together and screeched aggressively at her. En roared again and powered up, sending a few pebbles flying away from her feet. She then set her eyes back onto them, after seeing that they looked to be intimidated, she dashed forward and landed a punch square in the head of the one that tried to take her down with it. It got killed immediately.
Seeing this, the other Saibamen got enraged and launched their attack again. En grabbed hold of one of them by the leg and swung it around, knocking and sending them flying backwards and slamming into the wall. They slid down with a sickly thud, then leapt up and charged at her again. When one of them slashed towards her she jumped up and performed a Double Axe Handle on its head; an attack formed with two hands clasped together, held high and slammed down on the opponent. It was very effective move from the large dent it left on the Saibaman, who died immediately from the impact. One of the Saibamen's head slit open and gushed out acid, En flew up just in time to dodge it and witness it melt away the rocks easily like butter, then further eroding the floor away creating a small canyon from the slit.
Having just dodged what would have deformed her permanently, En felt her adrenaline rushing through her like rapid currents in her blood stream. She formed medium sized energy balls with both hands and threw them one at a time at each of the attacking Saibamen. Upon contact with the energy balls the two Saibamen exploded into fleshy chunks from the combustion. She then dashed forward to the last one and put a hole in its stomach and through to the back with her fist, then retrieved her fist back and watched it writhe in pain while it struggled to breath its last breath. Something made En unable to withstand the sight, she focused her eyes intently and shot thin but deadly energy beams out from both eyes, penetrating through the heart of the dying Saibaman, ending its life immediately. She looked around and saw how much the man made-landscape changed, the rocks were mostly reduced to rubbles. En stood there in silence. The smell of burning flesh invaded her nose and the reality finally hit her.
She heard a crash, but remained where she was without so much as looking up. She heard frantic shouting and footsteps. She then felt someone touch her face. It felt warm but impatient, then she felt herself being hugged very tightly. Words were spoken and exchanged between the people who came in, she could hear them but could not listen to them, they may as well be static noises.
"En? En can you hear me? Hello?" Said Seripa as she inspected En. En stood there without so much as responding to anything, so Seripa simply resorted to picking her up and took her back to Dr. Malaka's office for physical examination.
"How is she doc?" Asked Seripa as Dr. Malaka walked out of his office.
"Apart from a few abrasions that I've cleaned and dressed, she's physically fine really, surprisingly she's in top shape after the ordeal. I'm keeping her under observation for tonight, it may be wise that she will not undergo any training tomorrow, it's not uncommon for newcomers to need some time to recuperate mentally when they kill something for real for the first time. The day after is when your team depart for missions right?"
"Yeah, you think she'll be ready?"
"Hard to say, what does Bardock have to say about this?"
"He's beating up Purika as we speak, so I won't be surprised if he drags him in here in a few minutes time. I still can't believe that I trusted that wretched shithead! If I can I'd just strangle him with my own bare hands for this is the last time he's fucked with us!"
"It was very dishonest to use five Saibamen at once on a beginner. I shall have to write a report about this to my superiors."
"You mean pansy and the blowfish?"
"If you mean Zarbon and Dodoria then yes, do remember that they're the reason why we're all under employment Seripa, though admittedly I'm not too fond of them myself."
"What do they care? They always turn their noses up at us whenever they visit here."
"I am contracted to keep them up to date with things, a lot of red tapes I admit, but it is part of my job. Oh hello Bardock, we were just talking about you before."
Bardock dumped an unconscious Purika at his feet.
"Bear this in mind doc, if I weren't assigned captain I would've left this piece of shit rot outside of the station so the sand creatures can eat him alive, but if I get one more strike then I would be disqualified and can no longer have my team with me."
"Thank you for bringing him here Bardock, I couldn't have agreed more than you. I still have to heal him after all."
After a brief discussion of En's condition with Dr. Malaka, Bardock then asked.
"Doc, can I go see her?"
"Just in that room there."
"Thanks."
Bardock walked into the room that En was in, she was sitting on the treatment bed, her feet dangling, her expression vacant. Bardock sat down beside her and spoke in a low volume.
"Listen, I beat up Purika for messing with us, he's knocked out as we speak, but he won't be messing with us again. The truth is, he was supposed to tell just one Saibaman to attack you, not five, we have been using Saibamen for training all along, I had to fight one myself when I was younger. En, you passed the test, you used all the techniques I taught you." Bardock felt weird, he did not recall having to speak so gently and with so many words before, with anyone let alone her. Still not getting any response from En, he continued on.
"Seripa is going to take you to the markets tomorrow, you've been couped up here for too long. Then, as a prize, you get to have your very own scouter, so you don't have to share one with Seripa anymore." He spoke again, still with the gentle voice. En still did not make a sound.
Bardock peered down at her. He exhaled slowly, and for a while did not say anything further. Then he finally spoke.
"I'm sorry I didn't double check the mechanisms, it wouldn't have happened if I had been more careful."
The words shocked En out of her zone like a fish getting hooked out of water and she looked up at him. For once there was something in Bardock's eyes that En could not comprehend at the time. Something inside her jumped and En stopped staring and looked down again. They continued to be silent until Dr. Malaka, Toma and Seripa walked in.
"Bardock, it's time." He said.
"I'll come and pick you up tomorrow kiddo, we can get something to eat at the markets. So I'll see you." Said Seripa as she brushed En's left bang behind her ear. Toma exchanged an approving nod with her before leaving with the rest of them, except Bardock, who exchanged a long look with her, before he finally left with the others. That night, En felt incredibly flustered and despite the fatigue, it took her a very long time to finally get to sleep. In her dreams she kept seeing Bardock's face, he seemed to be speaking something to her but she could not hear what he was saying, for she was drowning in his eyes.
