Scene Seventeen

En could still hear the Saibamen's screeching in the back of her mind but not so clearly anymore, the abrasions have healed and the new lessons that was not combat-related had given even more mentally strenuous activities to occupy her mind. She snuck out with her scouter after waking up and unable to fall asleep. She had been playing with it for the last two hours before she snuck back to her bunk, two minutes before the alarm went off. The simplified geometrical shapes and symbols on the scouter were designed to be immediately legible and readable so that anyone with little amount of literacy could pick it up immediately, very trooper-friendly was the design concept that the scientists had in mind to begin with. Even with that, she wrote the symbols out in the sand over and over again, paranoid that she would forget everything once she sets foot in her space pod.

It was weird for her, tapping the buttom randomly, picking up small signs of life that were scattered around varying distances. Occassionally a lone sand wolf or two stared at her from a distance, but the wild animals' instincts enabled them to differentiate prey from being preyed on. Quite often they had slowly moved away from her in the distance. A week ago, En would have desperately tried to keep herself alive while fighting them should she had the unfortunate luck of encountering them, but now she could easily make a meal out of them.

En pondered to herself about this new life she stumbled across. From dealing with cadavers to reducing living breathing Saibamen into fleshy chunks, between the two lives, it was one or the other.

This Bardock, she thought to herself, I can trust him, but I can't go on like this. A part of her was screaming for her to escape. But if I do, she thought to herself, he would hunt me down and find me, and I'll still get sent off this planet, I've never travelled outside of it before, I've seen space pods and space ships flying across the sky, but can I survive outside this Godforsaken planet?

En thought back to the space pod navigating experience, it was the first time that she had to deal with so many buttons on one panel and for the first thirty minutes she was literally smashed across the walls in the room if not for the padding inside and the semi-anti gravity that controlled the impact.
Everything from the life support system to the emergency oxygen kit, Bardock was very concise with the teaching to the extent of being brutal, pinning everything down to the last detail, he did not let her leave the room for a full six hours until she had everything down to a habitual-touch. She was mentally exhausted, she could not even remember what she had for dinner that night, nor remember anything that she had talked about at the table, if she had talked at all.

Being instructed to go to the outside of the building and learning how to read basic characters, for her it was equivalent to being expected to know how to run when she was still trying to learn how to crawl. She wanted to cry but her pride prevented her from doing so in front of Bardock, he was the last person she wanted to show any weakness.

She felt bad when she insulted him and ran off while he was distracted when talking to Toma so she waited outside, but upon seeing him again she could not muster the courage to talk to him, especially when it felt that to him, anything she did was barely scratching the surface.

The sky was still dark at the time, it was a fathomless inky blue with a thin veil of purple and encrusted with stars of varying brightness. Despite the coldness, En felt relatively at home due to the protective gears that were designed to keep the body temperature intact. Because of that, for the first time, she could appreciate how ethereal the desert landscape was. She tapped her scouter again, wondering if she could pick up signs of life from outer space.

No signs of life in the night sky. For the first time, En felt very insignificant, but feeling safe at the same time. She knelt down and wrote the characters randomly in the sand, then out of curiousity, she took off one of her gloves and scooped up a handful of sand. The finely ground, almost powder-like if not the slight gritty property of the sand felt cold but almost silk-like when they escaped through the gaps between her fingers. She played with it again and again, though monotonous, her subconscious began to relax.

She lay in the sand, feeling the coldness against her cheek, her mind randomly drifting back to yesterday. The market was amazing, it was not just the exotic wares and odd gadgets that was seen being exchanged for credits on scouters, there were scents of fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly slain beasts with their innards scooped out and had their cavities displayed out, hosed down and drained of blood, some were deboned and some with bones intact making them more appetising and ready to be cooked after purchase.

There were herbs and spices that packed such a strong aroma that almost made her sneeze, the vibrant colours ranged anywhere from saffron to bright pea green. The urns and vases contained various cooking oil and flour, there were even stalls that sold food that were ready to be consumed on the spot as as soon as credits were transferred. Some of them were even being grilled on the spot. Her nose twitched as the memory of the scent kicked in. That scent was so tangy in the air that at the time, she could almost taste it just by opening her mouth. And of all the stalls, he stopped at that one and bought her the one that had just finished grilling on the rack.

That plump squid was grilled to al dente and skewered through a sharpened stick. The tangy brown sauce that was brushed on to the surface before it got grilled had infused itself with the surface of the smooth squid, the exterior was crisp with the inside remained resilient. En could not remember the cafeteria having food being this out of this world. She did not remember the details of eating the first one, she did however remember eyeing Bardock's one. She could not remember how she ended up eating as many squids as she desired, every bite was so delicious that she had lost count. She caught Bardock smiling. It was such a sight to beheld.

There were no calculating callousness in his eyes and commanding sternness in his voice and underneath that shadowy marquee, the sun rays bounced a flare off his green scouter and softened the angular features on on his face. He was so handome when he smiled, at that very moment he was the only one that she could see, everything ceased to exist. Even the light pink scar on his face glowed gently. En wanted to reach out and caress that scar just to feel the tautness of his skin. She saw his lips move but did not hear what he was saying until he waved his hand in front of her face.
"S'matter kid you dreamin' or what? C'mon we gotta get moving!" He swiched back to being impending aggressive, the impatience in his voice returned and his features were barred up with austerity once more. En wondered to herself why she did not remember that very moment at the time, the only explanation was that rest of the day was so mind-demanding that it got buried underneath.

I want to see that smile again.

I want to make him smile.

Thinking back to that memory made En feel warm and tingly all over. She snuggled her face into the sand until she accidentally breathed some in and spent the next minute coughing and sneezing them out.

I'll do it for him.

And only for him.

She stood up and brushed the sand off, then put the glove back on. She watched the amber hue peek out from behind and spread its warmness across the horizon as she checked her scouter for the time. I'd better get back before Seripa gives me an earful, she'll be up any minute. She thought to herself. After glancing at the impending sunrise again, she returned to the inside of the building without looking back.

I think this is my favourite chapter up to date. A lot of reasons, but I won't get into it, other wise it'd be another paragraph of waffling XD

Happy New Year everyone! Happy 2012!
