The Hunt
“Damn it is so cold,” Duo whined as he inched closer to Heero for warmth.
“I don’t know Duo,” Quatre said sticking his head further out the open car window, “I kind of find it refreshing.”
“Quatre,” Duo whined, “Wind up your window.”
Duo was practically sitting in Heero’s lap he was trying so hard to keep warm.
Trowa and Wufei were in the car behind them.
They’d landed on earth in one of Quatre’s private shuttles. They had then boarded a plane that landed close to the mountain range indicated on the map. They were now driving to a town at the base of the mountain.
They were then going to hire a plane and land at a town half way up. Before continuing up on snowmobiles to the lodge that was shown on the map by a big red ‘X’.
Duo turned to look at Quatre and couldn’t help but laugh.
Quatre had snow in his hair and on his eyelashes. Quatre’s cheeks were also flushed with the cold making them and his nose a rosy red colour.
“You look like you’re having fun,” Duo said grinning.
Quatre just grinned back at Duo.
“But Quatre please wind up the window. You can play in the snow when we stop,” Duo said to his blonde friend.
“Okay Duo,” Quatre said sighing as he wound up the window.
Quatre sat back in his seat and watched the scenery go by.
Snow covered conifer pine trees surrounded the occasional house.
Suddenly a line of shops flew past the window followed by more and more buildings.
Finally they had arrived in the town. Heero headed straight for the other side of it where the small local airport was located.
When they arrived at the airport an old man, who was dressed in fur-lined pants and coat, came out to greet them.
“Welcome. Are you the five who wanted the light plane to take up to Schnee?” the man asked extending his hand.
“Yes we are,” Duo said walking up to the man and shaking the extended hand.
Heero stood staring up at the mountain.
Heero turned around to look at the others just in time to see Quatre haul a snowball at Duo.
It hit Duo in the back of the head.
Duo swung around to see who did it.
“Quatre,” Duo yelled, “You are in so much trouble.”
Duo started to chase Quatre around the airport driveway.
Heero sighed and went over to where the old man was laughing at Duo and Quatre’s antics.
The old man turned to Heero a huge smile on his face.
“If you will come in and sign some paperwork you can take the plane but I’m not sure why you would want to go up to Schnee. Not many people go up there since those damn rebels set up camp just outside the city,” the man said.
Heero didn’t say anything.
The old man led Heero into an office where he signed a few pieces of paper and received the keys to the plane.
“It’s the red one,” the old man said getting slightly scared of Heero’s quiet manner.
Heero walked out of the office and over to where Trowa and Wufei were standing close together for warmth watching Duo and Quatre wrestling in the snow.
Heero walked over to the plane, hopped in and started it up. Trowa and Wufei climbed in as well.
Upon hearing the engine Duo and Quatre got up and ran to the plane. The two climbed in and shut the door.
Heero pulled out onto the runway and started down it.
Soon they were in the air and on their way up the mountain.
Quatre again watched the scenery pass by as their plane flew low over the forest covered mountain.
They were just about to prepare for landing at Schnee’s airport when a familiar whistling sound indicated someone had started shooting missiles at them from the ground.
Heero swerved to the side but two of the missiles pierced the right wing of the plane and another pierced the tail. Shrapnel from the missiles and the plane ripped through the metal plating of the plane. Leaving large gaping holes in the side and bottom of it.
Quatre cried out in agony as several of the pieces of shrapnel pierced his abdomen and right leg.
“Quatre,” Duo cried and leaned over his blonde friend.
“Apply pressure to the wounds,” Trowa said from beside Heero in the front of the plane.
More missiles were fired, even though Heero tried to avoid them three hit the propellers and another went through the front of the plane and the engine started to smoke before it stopped all together.
“Prepare for an emergency landing,” Trowa called out.
Heero tried to pull the nose of the plane up as they started to fall.
The plane crashed through the trees. Its wings and tail was ripped off and branches punctured the sides putting a large gash in Wufei’s leg.
When the plane came to a halt the five Gundam pilots found themselves lodged high up in the trees.
“How in hell are we going to get out of this?” Duo asked his hands trying to stop the bleeding of Quatre’s wounds.
“Trowa and I will climb to the ground,” Heero said, “Then throw Quatre and Wufei out. We’ll catch them.”
“Are you nuts Yuy,” Wufei cried trying to stand before falling back into the seat in agony.
“Do you have any other ideas?” Heero asked Wufei.
Wufei looked at Heero for a while then shook his head in a negative.
“All right,” Duo said, “But once we’re down what do we do then? It looks like there is a blizzard brewing.”
“We’re closer to the lodge,” Heero stated simply.
“But with Quatre and Wufei injured and this blizzard coming in there is no way we’re going to make it,” Duo said.
“Maybe we should stay here,” Quatre said weakly, “Until the blizzard has passed. Then someone can go for help.”
“Quatre is talking some sense. There is no cover out there from the blizzard,” Duo said.
“But the high winds may dislodge the plane,” Trowa reasoned.
Heero jumped from the plane landing on the ground and rolling.
Trowa leaned out and saw Heero motion for him to stay.
Heero then ran off disappearing into the stand of trees.
“What’s happening?” Quatre asked his voice barely a whisper.
“Don’t worry about it Quatre,” Duo said adjusting the blonde so he was in Duo\'s lap.
This position allowed Duo to apply more pressure on the large wounds on Quatre’s abdomen.
Quatre winced at the pain.
“I wish we knew whom we were hunting for,” Wufei said as he tried to stand again but failing miserably.
“Whoever it is I’m sure they’ll be able to clear everything up. Like why Heero’s making like a space cadet. He’s been so out of it lately it’s very worrying,” Duo said sighing.
“He probably just has a lot on his mind Duo. If there is something seriously wrong I’m sure you’ll be the first to know,” Quatre whispered weakly, “You are the closest to him after all.”
“Winner is right. Yuy’ll be fine,” Wufei said.
Wufei was finally able to stand up and hobbled over to the door to look out it.
He was just in time to see Heero re-emerge from the trees he’d disappeared into.
“Heero’s back,” Wufei said watching as the boy motioned for them to come down.
Trowa had been leaning over Wufei’s shoulder when Heero motioned for them to come down.
“Alright Duo, Heero seems to have come up with an alternative,” Trowa said looking at the long-haired brunette, “Do you think you can handle giving these two a hand out of the plane.”
“Push Wufei out of a plane,” Duo said grinning, “My dream come true.”
Just as Trowa was about to jump from the plane Wufei stopped him.
“You will catch me. Knowing Maxwell he’ll push me out whether or not I want to go,” Wufei said.
Trowa gave him a simple nod and jumped when he hit the ground he rolled.
Heero and Trowa could see Duo holding a now unconscious Quatre behind Wufei.
Wufei took a deep breath and jumped.
Trowa caught Wufei easily and put him down. Wufei tried to stand on his own but something made him feel sleepy almost fainting he leaned heavily against Trowa.
“What’s wrong?” Trowa asked the Chinese boy.
“I don’t know,” Wufei said softly watching as first Quatre was thrown from the plane and then Duo jumped, “For some reason I can’t keep my eyes open.”
“Here,” Trowa said turning his back on Wufei.
Wufei leaned on Trowa’s back. Trowa stood up giving the Chinese boy a piggyback.
Quatre also received a piggyback from Duo and they all followed Heero into the trees.
They’d only walked a short while when they came to a very small cave. It was approximately 3 x 3 meters.
Along the way Heero had grabbed several sticks. Before the fast falling snow could cover them all.
Once in the cave an unconscious Quatre and a sleeping Wufei were placed side by side at the back of the cave.
Heero started a fire while Duo and Trowa tried their best to fix Quatre and Wufei’s wounds.
“So we wait out the storm in here then what?” Duo asked as he ripped off a bit of his shirt to tie around Quatre’s leg wounds.
“One of us will scout the land tomorrow to see if we can pin point our location,” Trowa said taking a quick look at Wufei’s gash.
He saw that it went from his shin all the way up to his hip.
Duo tried to start a conversation with Heero but just got ignored so Duo started talking to Trowa.
Heero stared out into the snow. Running everything through his mind just trying to get a grasp on the situation.
He knew that they would have to fight again. Something in his bones told him so. But who, what, why?
Relena’s constant stalking kept him up to speed on the politics and negotiations between the colonies and earth. There was nothing there to even suggest a war breaking out.
#”Don’t be sad Heero everything will turn out alright. I will always fight for you and I’ll will always watch over you,” a female voice he’d identified to belong to someone he’d once called Yuki but she sounded a lot younger than in his last flashback.
“As I you Yuki but I can’t keep bailing you out of trouble. You seem to attract it like bees to honey,” he heard himself reply, he too sounding young, maybe about five.
“Hey,” Yuki said sounding rather miffed, “You’re just as bad.”
“Heero and Yuki the trouble magnets,” he laughed.#
A feeling that someone was watching him interrupted Heero’s flashback.
He turned to find both Duo and Trowa looking at him worried.
“Are you okay Heero?” Duo asked softly.
Heero just looked at him then went back to staring out into the blizzard. Watching the snow be blown into mini tornadoes.
He sighed feeling the cold winds change direction so it was coming into the entrance of the cave.
Heero went and sat down next to Duo to block the wind.
He knew Duo had an uncanny fear of feeling cold. Duo had explained that it was from living on the streets on L2 for so long.
Duo snuggled in closer ready to fall asleep when Heero’s body suddenly became erect and he looked out into the blizzard.
“What’s up?’ Duo said sitting up and looking at Heero.
“Shhh,” Heero said holding up a hand.
Suddenly Heero stood up still holding up his hand in an act to silence any questions.
“What is it Heero?” Trowa asked after Heero had lowered his hand.
“A motor,” Heero replied.
The three conscious pilots listened quietly and sure enough they heard something mechanical approaching fast.
Suddenly, outside the cave, it stopped but the former pilots couldn’t see because of the raging blizzard outside blocking their view.
The three moved towards the back of the cave, drawing the weapons they carried out of habit, ready to protect the unconscious Quatre and Wufei.
As someone entered the cave they pointed their guns at the figure cocking them.
The figure upon hearing this brought out two guns from within their coat.
Walking further into the cave the figure stood before the fire. With a shake of their head the hood of the figure’s coat fell backwards revealing their face.
Before them stood a girl with dark brown hair and black eyes that rivaled Wufei’s in colour. Her eyes showed no emotions when she looked at Duo and Trowa but as she looked at Heero her eyes filled with emotion for a brief second before she hid it behind a stone cold mask that they had seen many times before on Heero.
Heero lowered his gun putting it away.
At this submission by Heero, Duo and Trowa followed suit.
The girl lowered her guns slowly before putting them back within the confines of her coat.
She then reached into the sports bag hanging from her shoulder and pulled out five ski jackets.
She threw a khaki green one at Heero and a forest green one at Trowa. Duo received a black one and he put it on without hesitation since he was freezing.
The girl also held a white and a baby blue one.
“Your friends appear to be injured. Being out in this weather will not help them any,” the girl said her voice was soft but unemotional.
While Heero and Trowa put the white coat on Wufei, the girl and Duo put the baby blue one on Quatre.
“We had better get them out of the cold. My cabin‘s not to far from here,” the girl said.
Duo carried Quatre outside the cave and Trowa carried Wufei.
Outside the cave was a snow mobile with two trailer-like sleds attached to the back.
Duo sat in one trailer cradling Quatre in his arms while Trowa got in to the other and held Wufei.
The girl retrieved two blankets and wrapped them around the boys in the two trailers.
She then hopped on the snowmobile and started the engine. Heero climbed on behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist so he wouldn’t fall off as they went along.
The girl steered the snowmobile easily and very fast through the trees. The winds of the blizzard that had come in was blowing snow across their path making visibility almost none but the girl seemed to be able to see easily.
Finally the snowmobile slowed down then came to a stop.
Heero could see to the left of them a large black shape but he couldn’t make it out through the heavy falling snow.
The girl had already gotten off the snowmobile and was helping Duo and Trowa get their injured friends out of the trailers.
The girl led the way through the snow. She walked up some stairs and across a large verandah the wood resounding under their feet.
The girl opened the door and allowed the boys to go in before following and closing the door behind them.
They stood in a solid oak entry hall.
“Follow me,” the girl said walking past them and through the halls of the house.
She led them into a large room.
The walls were made of solid oak and a large stone fireplace took up half of one of the outside walls. Three couches and the fireplace were set in a square with a shag rug on the floor in the middle.
The fireplace was lit and the room was bathed in the soft warm glow that radiated from it.
Duo and Trowa went over to the couches and put Quatre and Wufei down.
“Do you have a first aid kit?” Duo asked looking at the girl.
The girl and Heero were just standing there staring at each other.
The girl looked at Duo and nodded.
The girl walked out of the room but appeared again a short while later a small box in her possession. She handed the box to Duo who opened the box and prepared to fix up Quatre’s wounds.
“Where are the files?” Heero asked folding his arms across his chest.
The girl pointed at the fireplace.
“What,” Duo squeaked, “You mean that you burnt the files. Do you know what you have done?”
“Yes,” the girl said turning from where she was looking at Duo to look at Heero, “I destroyed them because they contained information that could be used to start a war, blue prints of weapons and such things.”
“So you’re the person who stole them?” Trowa asked looking at the girl.
The girl turned to look at Trowa who had removed Wufei’s jacket and was know trying to clean the gash on Wufei’s leg through the large whole in his pants. Knowing full well that Wufei would have kittens if he found out he’d been even remotely naked in front of the unknown girl.
The girl nodded and walked over to him and Wufei.
The girl lifted one of Wufei’s eyelids and grabbing a small torch from the first aid box she shined it in Wufei’s eyes.
“When he got hurt did he feel really tired like he was unable to stay awake,” the girl asked letting go of Wufei’s eyelid and went to look at the other eye.
“Yes,” Trowa said watching her.
“Good,” the girl said, “It will help. You can remove his clothes it will help. I won’t look.”
“What will?” Duo asked.
He was trying to remove a large piece of shrapnel from Quatre’s abdomen with a scalpel and tweezers.
“Your friend has come into contact with Wild German Chamomile a very strong herb. He’ll be out cold for at least four more hours,” the girl replied walking over to Duo and holding out her hand.
Duo looked at her, then her hands, before handing over the instruments and moving.
The girl kneeled before Quatre and leaned over his abdomen. She lowered the scalpel to the wound and cut it open a little wider before putting the tweezers in and pulling out the piece of shrapnel.
She continued with the other wounds before cleaning them.
She then threaded a needle and started stitching up the wounds.
“Why did you steal the files?” Trowa asked the girl.
“Someone was after them for reasons I don’t know about fully, yet,” the girl replied simply.
“So how much younger are you then your brother?” Trowa asked.
“Five minutes and twenty three seconds,” the girl replied not even looking up from her stitching.
“What did you ask that for?” Duo asked bewildered at Trowa’s unusual question.
Trowa ignored Duo’s question and turned to Heero who had sat down on one of the couches and was watching his sister tend to Quatre.
“Yuki,” Heero said softly, “I’m sorry.”
“My name is Yukiko. I’d prefer if you used it,” Yukiko said not even pausing.
They were silent for a moment before Yukiko stopped what she was doing and sighed.
“There is no reason for you to be sorry,” Yukiko said looking at her brother she gave him a small smile.
Heero nodded.
Although it had, to the others, looked like the two siblings had only exchanged a few words they had actually done and said more.
“So,” Duo said turning to Yukiko, “You’re Heero’s twin sister?”
“Yes,” Yukiko said putting the finishing touches on Quatre’s wounds and turning towards the longhaired boy beside her.
“That is awesome,” Duo yelled launching himself at her, “I can’t believe Heero has a sister.”
Yukiko was being hugged by Duo very tightly. She was so shocked she didn’t know how to react.
Duo then pulled back and took Yukiko’s face in his hands and looked at her turning her head from side to side.
“I can actually see it but you have black eyes where as Heero has blue,” he said closing the gap to stare into her eyes.
“We’re twins not Siamese twins,” Yukiko said kind of freaked that she was currently nose to nose with the longhaired boy she had only just met but had seen fight during the war and the Mariemaia incident.
“Cool,” Duo said pulling Yukiko back into another hug, “It is so good to meet you.”
Duo then saw Yukiko’s hair and started pulling it out of the back of her jacket.
“Hey,” Duo said when he’d freed her hair from her jacket, “It’s longer than mine.”
Yukiko sat back her hair, which was in a braid, being held by Duo. She looked at him before turning to her brother.
Heero was trying hard not to grin. His years of training to be the ‘perfect soldier’ had been wearing away under Duo’s constant care and attention and now he found himself showing more emotion.
Trowa came to Yukiko’s rescue before Duo decided to hug her again or ask some questions. He had a few of his own he’d like to ask.
“Yukiko do you use Yuy as a last name,” Trowa asked.
Yukiko looked at Trowa then at Heero who had a slightly lost look on his face.
“Yes I do,” Yukiko said, “It is my real last name after all.”
Duo almost fell over.
“You mean Heero’s last name has actually really been Yuy all this time?” Duo asked, “Not just some name he was given by Doctor J to represent that guy who wanted peace but was assassinated. What was his name again?”
“Heero Yuy,” Heero said rolling his eyes.
Duo just blushed.
“Yes,” Yukiko said.
“Well what do you know,” Duo said looking at Heero.
Duo then yawned widely not bothering to cover his mouth.
“So where do we sleep?” Duo asked.
“Upstairs,” Yukiko replied.
“What shall we do about Quatre and Wufei?” Trowa asked.
“I’ll watch over them,” Heero said plainly.
“Are you sure Heero. I mean I don’t have to sleep,” Duo said looking at his friend.
“He’ll be sleeping also,” Yukiko said, “I’ll take care of them.”
Heero looked at his sister for a moment before nodding.
Duo, Heero and Trowa stood up nodding goodnight to Yukiko and went upstairs to sleep.
