Chapter 2

Chapter 2

“June 29, 1928,” I wrote in my journal. “The war has been going on for so long, and I’m getting so tired of it. I’ve lost touch with so many friends, and most of them I’ve found out later are dead, victims in the countless battles that have plagued this country. Maes Hughes, who married his long-time love, Gracia, left a few months ago. He writes to her as often as he can, but the mail system here is such a mess that it’s often two or three weeks before mail arrives, and it doesn’t always arrive in very good condition. Sometimes, the mail cars are attacked, or caught in the crossfire of a battle that the driver innocently drives into. I’m glad that Al isn’t yet old enough to join the war effort, and they won’t take me because of my mechanical arm and leg, even though I’ve been using them for years now.”

I sat back in my chair. How many times had the auto-mail I wore saved me from excruciating pain, and yet the German military was being picky about who they accepted, so I couldn’t go into battle. As I thought about it, though, I was glad. I was now 22 years old, and was to be married to a lovely girl by the name of Rachel Grensen, a Jewish girl who I love dearly. Another reason I had not been accepted for the German army was my love for this woman, as my association with Jews was shunned by many. We had thought of moving to Austria, or perhaps to America, after we were married, to escape the persecution her people were going through.

Al was also seeing someone, a girl by the name of Greta. While they had no real intention of marriage yet, it was difficult to keep them apart. Al was 17 now, and had begun preparing to go to the university in Vienna, of course taking Greta with him to escape the difficulties of the war. This was another reason that I had thought about taking Rachel to Austria, so that I could raise my family close to where my brother was.
“Ed?” Al said, walking in the door of my room. “Writing in your old journal again?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I wonder what people will think in eighty years when we’re gone and they read this, a collection of both worlds.”

“You’ll find out sooner than you think, Brothers,” came a malicious voice from the shadows. Al and I looked around, and I nearly screamed when I saw transmutation circles suddenly appear on the floor, one below each of us, connected by a line.

“Brother, what’s going on?!” Al screamed. I didn’t have time to respond when I felt myself sinking into the floor. “Oh, no, what about Greta? GRETA!!”

“Rachel!” I cried. “RACHEL!” The weight of the auto-mail was pulling me down faster, and I continued screaming until my mouth was silenced by the strange gates that had been created below us. As I lost consciousness, the last thing I remembered was thinking to my darling Rachel. “I’ll come back to you, I promise.”

“It’s hard to believe that the time I talked to you about just before we came here is what this time actually is,” I mentioned to Al later that evening. “That was 1928, and now it’s 2006.” Through interactions with other con-goers, we got enough food and such to get through the night, and many people were sleeping in the halls of the building, and the officials didn’t seem to be objecting to it. I also seemed to be pretty popular with the people who were fans of the Fullmetal Alchemist movie, as I showed them that my arm actually was real metal, and not just a mock-up. I couldn’t, however, use Alchemy around the people because then they’d figure out my secret.

“I miss Greta,” Alphonse said. “I wonder what she’s doing now?”

“I had the same thing on my mind, Bro,” I said. “Rachel and I are supposed to be getting married in a few days. What if I don’t get back in time? She’ll think I deserted her.”

“What year was it when you left?” Yusuke asked.

“1928,” I said. “Why?”

“Because I remember reading in my history books about a young woman named Rachel Elric, who went to America with her husband and son in 1933, and they spent ten years in New York City. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and the U.S. joined World War II, Rachel joined the Nurses Corps, and she and her husband went back to Germany with the Army and fought the Nazis to protect his wife’s people. They came back, and moved to California, where they still live now. They‘re both nearly a hundred years old.”

“Rachel!” I whispered. “She’s not so far away from me.”

“Ed, are you planning on going to see them?” Al asked.

“Of course I am, Al,” I said. “I need to find out how all this happened. I need to find out what happened to you and Greta, and Rachel’s family, and most importantly, I need to find out how to get back to our own time. At least now we know that we will make it back, and that I’ll have a son.”
