PartTwo

Wufei woke to nothing more alarming than the sound of blue jays squabbling outside his window. He blinked disorientedly for a few moments, then, remembering the events leading up to his previously unconscious state, he jerked upright. He nervously looked around his room. It was empty.

He hefted a deep sigh of relief, concluding that it was all nothing more than a very bad dream just as the door opened and a slight figure stepped into the morning light.

“Good morning!”

Wufei flinched at the sound of that all too cheerful voice. Slowly he turned his head toward the still open door and looked straight into the jewel like eyes of Shinigami.

The God of Death flowed closer and it took Wufei an extra second to realize that his uninvited guest was dressed in the same outfit as before except for one thing. This time it was half covered by an incorrigously ruffled powder blue apron. He also realized that the other boy held a tray heaped with various edible things. Despite his terror, Wufei’s stomach growled, its loud rumble breaking the silence.

A merry grin lit up Shinigami- no Duo’s face. “I thought you might be hungry!” The grin turned decidedly evil. “Especially after last night.” He plopped the tray into Wufei’s lap. “Eat.”

The dark haired boy found himself chewing and swallowing before his brain caught up with his body. He still kept a wary eye on his visitor though.

If Duo noticed his apprehension he made no comment on it. He just sat, watching Wufei with the unblinking eyes of a predator. This did not in any way distract Wufei from finishing his breakfast with all possible speed. If anything it only served to make him eat faster, the need to be rid of Duo’s distracting presence as soon as possible overriding every other desire.

“There is one thing left undone you know.” Duo’s musing voice cut through Wufei’s carefully constructed calm like sharp steel.

He looked up from his tray to find those eerily glowing eyes fixed on him and swallowed… hard. “What’s that?”

“A release to complete the unbinding.” The braided one answered cryptically.

“What?”

Duo just watched him silently.

Wufei didn’t think that one deliberate blink was much of a satisfactory answer to his question. Still he wasn’t about to take the other boy to task over it. There were worse things than death and he had an awful feeling that Duo might just know them all.

Rias tas that thought entered his somewhat befuddled mind, a mischievous grin once more stretched Duo’s lips. The braided boy chuckled lightly and Wufei was left with the unsettling impression that Duo knew EXACTLY what had just occurred to him.

Duo winked and bounced to his feet to snatch the tray from Wufei’s lap. “Now on to more important things. I wanna bath, bath, ba—“ Duo’s voice faded as the skipped out the door and down the stairs.

Wufei looked around his room. Same east facing window, same antique white paint. The vsamesame forest green rug looked back at him and the cobalt blue comforter looked just as unimpressed with the entire scheme of things as it always did. Yes. It was the same room. So why did it feel almost—empty now that Duo’s bright exuberance was gone?

Steam fogged the mirror in the huge bathroom. The opulence of the room was only magnified by the mist caused by the nearly too hot water that was currently turning Duo’s fair skin a bright lobster red. Wufei watched diamonds of sparkling water gather and run down the cool white marble walls. He wiped uselessly at the sweat hanging precariously on the tip of his nose.

Duo cavorted in the sunken tub, unbraided chestnut hair floating on the surface of the bubble encrusted water. He batted playfully at the foam and scooped up a handful to blow it at the bedraggled necromancer.

Wufei gave a longsuffering sigh, raised his eyes toward the ceiling and wondered silently what he had done to deserve this torment. Then he lifted his hand again, this time to scrub at the soapy beard decorating the bottom of his chin.
