Sins of the Father

Duo lead the unnamed child through the castle, but the boy didn't let go of his tunic until his mother was gone. At this age Duo would have thought it cute that the boy was scared of his mother, but he found it strange as the boy clung to him when female servants or slaves walked by. Duo didn't question it, he felt that he needed to protect this boy, and that was all.
"Here we are, the Garden of Red," Duo said cheerfully grabbing the boy by the hand and running to the maze he knew by heart. He didn't just want to take the boy through the maze, but to the fountain in the center.
A beautiful fountain, chiseled out of black stone that glistened almost violet with the running water. It was of an angel from the heaves, his wings held high, but his head looked down with a melancholy expression. A face that looked down remorsefully from the heaves, as Duo liked to believe, with short hair where the water poured down his face in tears, but the main flow of war was from his hand. Which was reaching out for some unknown person.
"This was a gift to my mother from her father when I was born." Duo said as the boy was transfixed with it.
"It's beau-beautiful," the boy said, struggling over the foreign word he only heard from others.
Duo turned towards the boy, "I'm Duo Maxwell, heir to the throne, blah, blah, blah, blah, and all that good stuff, and you are?" He said quickly hoping to catch the boy off guard. Maybe he'll answer that way, since he didn't answer his father.
"My Father only called me boy." He said off handily, his eyes diverted away from Duo's violets and went back to the black figure before him.
"Can I give you a name? I don't think I'll like to call you boy." Duo said quickly, and the boy nodded his head.
The boy actualikediked the idea of having a name again. There was another who use to call him by a name, but he couldn't remember since they went away. Though he also wanted the older boy to like him, the child really wanted a friend.
Duo looked around thoughtfully. "Brandon, no." Duo said, and he started to pace. "Alex, no, not an Alex. What about Michel, no, no, let me see?” Duo said all the names he could think of, and his pacing took him to the other side of the fountain. Gasping, "I got it, it'll be the best," with that Duo ran around and dragged the boy back with him. Pointing at the statue. "He's suppose to be one of the lost gods, but that's all I know."
"You're going to call me Lost Gods?" The boy with cobalt blue eyes asked as he eye brows borrowed together in confusion.
"No silly. Here I've always loved this name, Heero Yuy. He's the guy that did this." Hand waving at the fountain. "But he died a few years ago in the war." Duo said, "So I don't think he'll mind if I call you that."
"Heero Yuy," The boy said in amazement. He had a name; he was so excited that he didn't hear the crowds cheering from far off. (1)
"Do you like it?"
"Yes." Heero said smiling up at Duo. Duo made a note to make Heero smile again.
"Duo?" His mother yelled from on of the entrances. Heero ran behind Duo when her voice filled the air, and Duo could feel Heero's quickened breath on his lower back where the boy clung to his tunic. His motheingeing the smart woman Duo knows her to be stayed where she was.
"Heero it's just my mother," Duo said softly, but the boy didn't care who she was.
"They hurt." He sobbed into his back. Duo turned around making Heero let go of his tunic. Tears held behind a veil of blue eyes, he was fighting to keep them there, but the result was his small body began to shake. Not wanting to see him cry Duo bent down and gathered him in his arms, but it had the opposite effect. Tears ran down Heero's face as he mumbled his words into Duo's neck. "Lady said I wasn't good enough for her red Rose." Heero mumbled over and over, "not good enough."
Duo said nothing, lost for the first time in his ten years of life for words. He looked up at his mother who was staring flabbergasted at the scene before her. With no words of comfort to offer Duo ran his hands in smooth continuous circles, like his own mother did for him.
The effect once again, but this time a wanted one, made Heero fall asleep.
"Come, let's put him in your bed." His mother said and when Duo looked at her with 'why' written in his violet eyes as they began to walk. "His room won't be ready till next week, it'll be the empty room next to yours. There just is no other decent place, for him. You know how the Darlian's or Noventa's get when we place guests by them."
noddnodded his head in agreement, and he didn't care if Heero was staying next to him or in his room. Truth be told, one his mother doesn't know, is that the other children especially the Darlian's and the Noventa's hated Duo. He may be the crowned prince, but the other children didn't care, and they hated when he ran his mouth. Which was most of all the time, and so he was alone in a sea of people.
That didn't bother him too much. The one’s that hated him fit right in with the stereotypical genre of spoil stuck up castle bred children.
By the time they made it to the North wing of the castle Duo’s arms and legs burned. His mother couldn’t carry Heero but Duo was strong enough to. Though walking with this dead weight for what seemed like a mile was a bit strenuous.
His mother opened one of the double oak doors for him, and he rushed in to place the person in his arms on the bed. Only to be told to wait by his mother, panic ran through him, has she changed her mind. She smiled at him and pulled the covers back for him, and Duo place Heero’s sleeping form on his bed.
“Let’s leave him to his rest, Duo, you still have lessons today.” His mother said, and Duo groaned as he closed the door.
***********
Duo walked into the room that his teacher deemed to be the best room for learning. Atop a stair case, with no windows and the roof slanted down making the room seem smaller then it was.n win with the fact of no windows once the think wood door was shut there was no signs, noises, nothing of an outside world. Duo hated it, and for his pleasure the other children his age in the castle joined him for lessons. And yet here was another example on reasons why Duo hated his lessons.
“Prince Duo, you are late.” Instructor Benttet said, her voice high in defense, another reason to add to his list.
“I wanted to see my Father.” Duo said sitting down in the only seat left, right next to Relena Darlian.
“That is no excuse, you are to be king one day, and I am to make sure you’re not a fool.” Her voice in a pitch shrill voice making Duo cringe. Duo was no fool, and said nothing as he took his seat.
Relena rolled her eyes at Duo, but he didn’t care anymore. Right now his mind was on Heero, why was he scared of his mother and who was this Lady he spoke of. Though Duo couldn’t keep his thoughts on Heero as he was called on to answer a question.
“Can you say that again?”
What seemed like forever for Duo but was merely a few hours later the teacher announced the end of the lessons. Duo walked quickly out of the room with two books they were expected to read; and at that, boring books with no action, just dull facts about another’s life. Sighing Duo started the long walk back to his room, alone like always.
“Prince Duo,” Relena yelled, well you couldn’t call it a yell, because ladies don’t yell. So Relena called for Duo in a sweet-hideously-taught voice.
/Her nurse maid has been busy/ Duo thought as she glided, not walk, she told him: Lady’s don’t walk, we glide.” She said once in her know-it-all-voice.
“Yes,” Duo turned around and saw Relena’s light blue eyes blaze in anger. He didn’t address her by her title, but Duo could tell she wanted something from him because her tantrum never came.
“Do you have a date for the celebration party?” Relena asked as sweet as poison. Duo grinned. Relena couldn’t go unless Duo took her, and Relena was not one to miss a party with grown ups. But it was her mother that wanted her to go with Duo, and only Duo, because she hoped that the King and Queen would see how cute a couple they are and brothel them together. Thus insuring the Darlian family more power in a peaceful manner.
Duo started to walk away, shaking his head, trying with all his might not to laugh in her face. Though when Relena glided towards Duo in a rush, Duo knew how to answer her.
“So...” She said impatiently.
“I am not going, I have other plans now.” Duo said he and he continued to walk on and turned to walk down the set of stairs. Relena was right beside him.
“But the Queen will make you go, and you, as a prince, coming to age need an es-escort.” Relena said the words they taught her almost beautifully.
“Another time, yes, she would have.” Duo said. Jumping the last three steps knowing Relena would not. “But someone has arrived.” With that said he ran until she was out of sight and her voice couldn’t reach his ears. /Might as well the rest./ Duo thought, but slowed as he neared the living wing.
A few minutes later he opened the door to his room. Looking around he saw Heero sitting on the bed, right where Duo had left him. Said boy looked over at Duo with relief written over his eyes, but soon was lost in a stoic manner.
Adrenaline still running through his veins and day light to kill before dinner, Duo offered they play one of his favorite games. A fantasy game of Pirates and when Heero agreuo tuo tossed him one of his wooden swords. Heero caught it midair by the hilt and he stood up looking over at Duo. Tossing it back and forth, and Duo watched in amazement. “That was so cool, Heero.” Duo said but soon went onto explaining the game outline. Duo was the pirate that just stole Captain Yuy’s ship, but Yuy wanted it back and was going to fight for it.
“What you going to do, Captain Yuy?” Duo asked, pacing closer to the door then to Heero.
“I’ll fight you and win.” the younger boy said, stepping forward, wooden sword ready, and eyes glistening with anticipation.
“Oh, are you sure you’ll winuo suo said with an evil smile.
“Yeah, cause if I win I get my ship back-but if I lose you get.... my other ship.” Heero said thinking for a minute before saying his words.
Duo laughed, “Only if you can catch me.” That said he ran out the room leaving a stunned Heero. Who seconds later peeled out after the now braided boy.
It would be with the sun died down to a flicker in the night sky, and both panting tiredly and hungry in the Garden of Red before the game ended. Laying on the cooling grass Duo turned to Heero.
&#ey, ey, Heero, who taught you how to fight? I mean you’re what five and you fight better then me.” Duo said.
“I am six,” Heero said staring at the night sky, watching the stars turn their lights on.
“Really that’s cool, but really Heero, who taught you?” Duo asked again. It was strange, because even if Heero was six, his father or whoever wouldn’t have taught him until he was five. And a beginner doesn’t advance to a moderate level in one year.
The grass crunched under Heero’s small body as he looked over at Duo in confusion.
“Someone’s suppose to teach me?” Heero asked generally confused. Duo realized this in a vague manner, but laughed it off. Maybe some people just have a knack for it.
“You’re weird, Heero.” Duo said smiling at him as he stood up, then turned and helped the boy up so they could have dinner.
