Chapter 3 -- Memories of Friends
Chapter 3 -- Memories of Friends
"Yes, Sir, I'll tell her," Hilde said to the police officer over the phone. Ami Maxwell was balled up on the couch, with Heero holding her with all he had.
"Was that the police station?" Quatre asked, and Hilde nodded. "Did they find them?"
"Yes, and from what he said, it was definately not a pretty picture," she said.
"I thought this would all be over after Wufei was killed," Ami whimpered. "I mean, you... you found the people who did it, didn't you?"
"They were just splinter cells, unfortunately," Heero said. "The police are searching all over the city for the ones who killed your brother, and the clues they've found, they'll find them."
"Why aren't we out looking for them, Scott?" Quatre asked.
"Because, Quatre, we'd only end up getting in their way," he said. He reached out his arm for his little blonde angel to come and sit beside him, and hugged him tight. "I know you three are being more affected by this than I am. Ami, Duo was your brother, and Hilde, you loved him too. My Quatre, Duo was your friend, and you loved Trowa like only you could love him. It's true that Duo used to be my lover, but I was having a hard time forgiving him for what he did to us, and Trowa was never too terribly close to me. I just worry... I don't know, I just worry that me keeping such a cool head is making me look like I don't care, and that's not how it is at all. Of course I care."
"None of us ever said that we thought you didn't care," Ami said, her tears finally subsiding. "Of course you do, and I think we all understand what you're going through, just losing Wufei too, who you were such good friends with." Heero looked over at Quatre as if to ask him if he'd told her about their secret, but Quatre just shrugged his shoulders and shook his head. "Even though I know that he's really gone this time, and not just disappeared like last time, I can get by with the fact that I know that my brother loved me, and that he died in the arms of someone he loved."
"She's right," Quatre said. "Trowa hurt me, and my son died because of what he did, but I know that despite all the pain that he caused, he did still love me. And knowing that he was accompanied to the other side by the one who he devoted himself to, even though it wasn't me, gives me a lot of strength."
"I thank God every minute that it wasn't you," Heero said. "I don't think I'd fare as well as I did last time we were separated, if I didn't know you were safe. I'm sad for their passing, but I'd go insane if you died, completely and totally insane."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days later, at the second set of funerals in the same number of weeks, both Heero and Quatre stayed at each others' side, each wrapped in the other's embrace, trying to hold onto their own emotions without becoming whimpering balls of sadness. As Heero had been there for Wufei's funeral, Sally was there to support him in his loss of Duo. Because Trowa had been so close to the Mormon Missionaries, and believed much of what they told him (according to Quatre's account), Quatre had agreed to allow them to arrange the funeral service and the style thereof. Hilde and Ami insisted, however, that Duo be given burial rites from the Catholic Church at the actual burial.
Completely worn out emotionally after the funeral, Quatre and Heero decided to go back to their apartment with some of their friends and family members, and simply talk about the two young men and their lives.
