Chapter 3

Note: the OYW is now called the first succession war
3: Transitions
Lieutenant Kayra Shiko struggled to keep the mobile suit moving in one straight line, the lack of her left leg was not helping much at all. She slammed into an asteroid, and then into a big chunk of colony. The Debris belt had been cleared 10 years ago when she was 15. She remembered her father going out with the salvage armadas to collect and reprocess all the usable metals left in the debris field. The recent massive battles had refilled the sector she was trapped in to beyond what it had been for the last three centuries. She fired the mobile suit’s 120mm chain gun that was attached to the backpack and brought up and over her left shoulder, splitting the massive rock right in front of her. She had managed to activate all four thruster units mounted on her back. The instability problem was fixed by the thrusters mounted on the top of the pack working with the thrusters on the bottom. The beam machine gun in her right hand was almost depleted but she kept it around just in case she managed to find a downed unit, and steal its E-Caps. She cursed the designers of her MS; the unit was a mass-produced version of the RX-182G-E Gundam. The main stay of special units, the new RGM-128G-E-M Mobile suit, called GEMs; witch was short for Ground Extraorbital Mass-produced MS. They combined the speed of the assault type and the fire power of the support and the accuracy of the Sniper variants all in one MS. The massive 150mm chain gun was derived from the MKII variant of the support Gundam, but the MKIIs never were produced due to their massive weight, close to 160 tons which was too heavy for earth operations. The Assault type was represented by the beam assault rifle, a concept introduced with the 128 series Gundams. The sniper configuration was represented in the beam assault rifle too, with its barrel extension and power increaser kit stored on her left hip armor plate. However powerful the designers said it would be, she could not make it take on three stinking Gelgoog C types. The C type had two massive strum thrusters mounted on the unit’s back, and it had a pair of massive 140mm Vulcan guns embedded in either of its shoulder plates; And a massive beam machine gun to boot. One lucky hit had blown the top left corner off her shield and severed her left leg at the waist armor. She cursed the designers again for not including a beam shield which was standard equipment on all Gundam class mobile suits.

Vale watched as his sniper’s shots took out the barracks, the command tower and the communications antenna farm. The first volley of explosions was followed up by a storm of various auto cannon fire from the support mobile suits, and a crippling fire linked barrage from the support Gundam’s 137mm cannons. While the dust still filled the air and the Zeon forces were totally stunned, Vale and Icarus charged in, Vale’s Gundam riding on its hover system and Icarus’s racing on its feet. The two split up, vale racing down the rows of MS hangers ripping them to shreds with his beam assault rifle on fully auto. The pink bursts of mega particles ripped right through the thin walled ready unit hangers, slicing the arms of two Zakus then their chests, causing their fuel tanks to blow. The next row he came to were up was the massive reinforced concrete down team and stand by team hangers. He blew the doors off them with his left arm’s Vulcan guns, the rounds made of hardened aligned crystal steel witch was lighter than lead and harder than depleted uranium, cut the regular hardened steel doors off easily, with enough energy to blast off the rear doors too. He charged in, continuing to use shock and fear to his advantage, shooting off the limbs of Zakus. One round slipped through the frame of a Zaku under heavy maintenance and penetrated the walls of the hanger and ignited the thruster and ammo bunker behind the interior partition wall. He was chased out of the hanger by a massive fire ball that singed his armor a little, but most of it was deflected around the Gundam when Vale activated the beam shield.

Icarus raced down the aircraft hangers using her semi auto beam rifle to take out the aircraft one by one. Soon she tired of it and called in an artillery strike, destroying targets as she lazed them. One of the snipers blew a hole through the leg of a Zaku that had snuck up behind her and almost cut her head off with its heat hawk. She watched as Vale kicked another Zaku in the chest and two Dom Ground types got decimated by his assault rifle.
Staff Sergeant Mike Remo sat in his Gouf Hover Type. He walked out of the underground hanger, using smoke clouds caused by the destruction of the hanger built on top of his. He charged across the MS path way, and headed straight for the GM attacking the flight line and aircraft hangers. Two more GHT’s formed up on his flanks, in his team’s standard configuration. His unit had a Gatling gun mounted in place of its left forearm, and a heat sword for use in their right hand along with a three barreled machine gun mounted on the right forearm. He targeted the unit, and unleashed a long burst with his Gatling gun. His wing men had 360mm bazookas mounted in place of their left forearms and rocket launcher pods mounted on their shoulder armor. For melee combat they opted for the new Zeon melee combat pod, which consisted of twin lances mounted on the back of the right arm and an extending heat sword mounted in the arm its self that came out of the top of its arm. The hand had spikes mounted on its top knuckles for a devastating punching attack. The GM turned and fired its beam rifle back making a massive crater out of what was an underground hanger’s roof. The Gouf to his left got sucked in, but it came out, its left arm launcher was bent, and it had some nasty gashes through its chest. It settled down back into hover mode as its jump jets deactivated. Remo fired his main weapon again, this time, the rounds crumpled the chest armor, and taking advantage of the weapon’s track fire mode in which the weapon followed a laser designator mounted in the head to ‘walk’ the fire across the target. The rounds impacted the unit squarely in the chest, crumpling armor and sending oil and coolant spraying like blood. The mobile suit fired back, but once again its shot went wild, blowing up a pile of debris in the path of the oncoming forces.

Icarus looked over her wounds, and decided that she should call in support, but even before she could toggle on the radio, one of the sniper’s Ballistic sniper rifles roared, sending a 200mm sniper round into the chest of the right flank unit.

Sergeant Satsuma watched with satisfaction as the 200mm round struck the chest of his target, penetrated it and carved a massive crater behind it with the remnants of its energy and explosive tip. The round caused the unit to fold around its impact point, quite literally snapping the unit in half. He lined up for a shot on the second unit when a pair of Zaku artillery types nailed Maxwell. His sniper rifle was a dual rifle, the top barrel was his regular beam sniper rifle, the bottom a ballistic one. However his most powerful weapon, the Main Battle Sniper rifle was more along the lines of cannon style weapons, because it was quite literally the main gun of the federation’s small frigates, a 320mm laser cannon with the power to level a building at a distance of seven miles. He rarely used it however despite its self supporting power unit, it taxed the unit’s cooling systems so close to the max, and he often had to shut the unit down to avoid the system blowing up or worse the reactor going critical from all of the excess heat. This however was one of the exceptions to his rule of firing the massive rifle in the middle of a battle, because Icarus had just been ripped to shreds by a combined attack from the Gouf variant and the two ZATs that just nailed Maxwell. He paused during the aiming process to watch in morbid fascination as the usually emotionless lieutenant Vale charged a group of oncoming Goofs and Dom Trophens, ripping them all down mercilessly with both of his beam sabers. One unit survived the attack spun around and hit Vale in the chest but it was rewarded in kind, receiving a long burst with the unit’s twin 90mm Vulcan guns. He aimed at the Gouf charging for his downed team mate, and fired. The massive recoil combined with the angle of the shot blasted him into the air, and damaged his left ankle actuators severely, but it was nothing he could not fix with a few hours of work.

Vale watched as the huge beam of energy ripped down from the sky totally disintegrating the unit it was shot at. The unit right next to it spun out of control, and with a little help from a few 120mm rounds from Edison, the unit tore its self to shreds. He glanced at his TACSYS display, and noted that there were three ZATS and a Gouf charging him. He did not even get the chance to fire at one as a combined barrage of sniper, artillery and support machine gunner rounds ripped the team to shreds, sending parts and chunks everywhere. He ran for Icarus’s unit, and shielded it as the Gouf’s reactor went critical, leveling half the base’s structures at once.

“Icarus, Icarus Can you hear me?” Vale shouted over the team’s com unit

“I suppose I can when you yell.” Icarus said weakly.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be over in a second to take care of your injuries Vale said softly.

Vale jumped from the hatch of his unit and ran to Icarus’s cockpit. As he climbed up to it, a shard of armor cut his leg open. He found the button to release the cockpit, and smashed it in with his escape tool. The explosive bolts holding down the front of the cockpit forced it to open to its max; he jumped into the cockpit and almost died from shock. He looked all around but he could not see Icarus anywhere.
“Lie…Lieutenant… cockpit… hanger…help” Icarus’s voice gasped through the coms suite.

“Hang on Icarus, fire off a beacon and I’ll find you.”

“O…Ok, beacon fired please…quick.”

Vale ran back to his cockpit and searched for the beacon with the TACSYS unit, when he found the signal in one of the hangers he forced the MS to move faster that he should have on the slick concrete, and the unit slipped and fell when he stopped suddenly. Vale looked over his own injuries before he rolled his unit over and jumped out. He grabbed some speed bandages and tied them around the gash in his leg and he wrestled his med kit out of the space behind his ejection chair. He carefully flipped the mobile suit back onto its feet and jumped out of the cockpit onto its extended hand. Once the hand set him down on the ground, he brought his assault rifle up and sprinted through the door. He saw a pair of Zeon infantry advancing on Icarus’s position. He brought the rifle up and hit the first soldier in the shoulder. They both spun and began to fire on him, while he slid for cover behind a stack of crates. he tossed an empty can to the left side of the stacks and sprung around the right to kill the soldiers. He nailed the first one in the chest, and he collapsed to the ground. He aimed for the second one and nailed him in the neck, bright arterial spray coating the aria around him as his corpse smacked into the ground.
Kayra spun her GEM around and slammed into an asteroid, and wrecked her shield. She threw a burst of power into her thrusters to unhook herself from the rock. She Spun back around and engaged the Gelgoog-C type with her beam assault rifle. The shots fizzled out 20 meters before the Gelgoog, forcing her to ditch it and go to her Gatling gun, but the Gelgoog shot the barrels off of it with its beam rifle. Enraged, Kayra drew her beam saber and charged the Gelgoog, but the Gelgoog shot off her thruster pack, causing her to loose all of her thruster propellant, and leaving her stranded. The Gelgoog lined up for a final shot, but its head exploded, followed quickly by its rifle. The 128 series Gundam flew over her, and shot another Gelgoog in the chest.

“Yo kid, you alright in there?” The pilot of the 128 Gundam asked

“Yes sir, I’m just fine, but this heap of junk is trashed.” Kayra said hotly

“Hold on for a second,” The pilot said as he fired a high powered shot that cut a Gelgoog in half.

“Sir, what’s going on, I just lost power to my sensors.” Kayra asked, getting scared

“Listen Kid, I’ve set your mobile suit to self destruct, you need to get out of it and over to me now!”

Kayra did not bother replying, she blew the hatch off her cockpit, and using her apogee pack, she drifted over to the Gundam’s hand. When she landed in the hand, the pilot closed it around her, tight enough to hold her still, but not enough to hurt her. She reached to her left and opened a hatch on the Gundam’s hand, revealing a spool of cable, an oxygen line and a com cable. She linked up each one to its respective spot on her new suit, and a text com appeared after she attached the com cable, it read:
From Angle 111 to pilot? Ok kid, you know the drill, Name Rank and number

She replied: From Pilot? To Angle 111 Lieutenant Kayra Shiko; 013-334-0056

Angle 111 asked: From Angle 111 to LT Shiko alright LT, how you feeling?

LT Shiko to Angle 111: I feel like crap, I need to get out of this suit, now because I think…

Angle 111 to Shiko: Kid?

Angle 111 to Shiko: Kid respond!

Shiko to Angle 111: get me to a place where I can clear my helmet now!

Angle 111 to Shiko: wait a minute, our ship is just over there!

Vale looked over his units, and shook his head Edison was out of the picture all together, his unit was trashed after the fight by the river, and now Icarus was out as well, with her damage beyond what he could send her back into action with. His mobile suits were in Ok shape, but low on munitions. A transport was headed their way, to take them back to Japan where new orders would be issued, and in a few cases, rewards. Lieutenant Kayra Shiko was put in a shuttle and sent to the Federation’s HQ in Japan, the only hold out to the Zeon’s advances. Both Vale and his team and Lieutenant Shiko settled in for their rides, hoping to get some leave when they got to Japan, but they were wrong, dead wrong.
