Chapter 2

Warnings: Time jumping....
Thanks to all who reviewed....and on ward through the fog....

Two Years Later:
Heero looked at the large ornate table of food with many different types of platters and bowls of food as far as he could see. A vay thy that Heero was still amazed with to this day, and for the basic fact that before his stay in the Maxwell home he had only eaten the bare essentials needed not to go hungry. This was different; a different life for Heero at that, and it's been so long that he's almost forgotten his old life.
A servant girl walked up to the table with her friends, laughing and giggling about something Heero only understood as a grown up thing. He had what he wanted, and not wanting to be seen he took another step back out of the dinning hall and into the shadows. Soon girlgirls passed but Heero stayed in his spot waiting.
He subconsciously pulled the dark blue vest that covered his white tunic. He should be use to this, use to the feel of rich clothing's pressing on his tan skin, but he wasn't. For some reason he couldn't get use to the almost too clean feeling of changing for every different functions in one day. Thoug had had gotten over his fear of girls, but he still couldn't stand when they touched him. Even Helen, Duo's mother, no matter how nice or gentle she was, Heero still tensed up as she hugged him.
"But, my Queen..." Lady Darlian's fake sweet voice pierced through the air, making Heero cringe. The Darlian women were not on his list, though he could stand being in the same room with them he couldn't stand them to touch him or when they spoke to him. He was a slave to them, and they didn't think highly of him, which he didn'dersderstand, but that was all right Duo still like him and hated the Darlian's as well.
"Lady Darlian we have spoken on this matter already."
"But my cousin, Lord Treize only wants to insure his stay." She went on like she hadn't heard what the Queen said.
"Yes, I know. You've informed me at lest a hundred times, Lady." The Queen said tiredly.
"Only because no arrangements...."
"Lady Darlian, he is not to arrive for another four years, and no arrangements will be made as of now." The Queen saidly, ly, but Lady Darlian walked in front of the taller woman.
"My Queen, I understand, but the whole kingdom and outer kingdoms are going to come to the prince's Crowning Ceremony." Relena's mother said in the sweetest voice she had.
"Lady Darlian, when I start making the list I will consult with you first. And if you'll excuse me I have more urgent matters to attend to." She said side stepping the smaller woman. Heero watched as Lady Darlian muttered curses at the Queen under her breath. Three of her personal guards that were only loyal to her stepped closer to her, talking in low voices that Heero couldn't hear what was being said.
"Heeherehere you are, I was looking for you." Duo said excitedly, pulling Heero out of the shadows stepping backwards quickly. End result was Duo hitting Lady Darlian making her trip on her long red dress. Her guard acted quickly seeing Duo as a threat they roughly pushed him away from their Lady, as Duo apologized.
Lady Darlian stood up, "You insignificant brat!" she whispered. She wouldn't dare scream her words aloud for the wrong people might hear them, and she wanted to stay in good terms with the King. Her anger was getting to her thought, and she acted like this boy was going to be unimportant.
"I said I was sorry, Lady...." Lady Darlian slapped Duo across the face, his cheeks flushed where her hand touched his flesh.
Heero didn't know whydid did it, but his actions spoke for him before he could think. Stepping forward, no one saw his hands reach for one of the guard's swords, but they did see as he drove it towards the Lady.
"Don't touch him every again." Heero said pressing the sword into her soft throat muscle.
"Heero?" Duo said softly, and Heero quickly turned his attention to the young prince. In the process he nicked Lady Darlian in her throat, but not only that he had sliced the guard he had taken the sword from across his upper arm.
"I'll have you skinned alive." Darlian said. Blood started to stain her too pale skin, and stain the guard's white armband that identified him as a Darlian guard. The red liquid burned into Heero's eyes, blood, for pleasure for pain, for you my sweet innocent one I think I'll show you both... The deep husky voice died away as he heard Duo's voice grasping him out of where ever he was. He dropped the sword making anyone who wasn’t looking at them turn.
"Heero," Duo said, taking his hand pulling him out of the Darlians' guard's hands, “come on, Heero, you have to get out of here. A guard has already went to inform my father, and right now it’s not looking good, Heero.”
Duo dragged Heero out of the castle and hurriedly through the grounds. The stable boys watched in curiosity as the crowned prince dragged his friend towards them.
“Master, what’s wrong?” One of the older stable boys asked. Heero had seen everything in a haze but he still didn’t understand what he had donong.ong. Was it not Lady Darlian who had hit the crowned prince? Not him, he would never hurt Duo. What was wrong, Heero was confused, why would the King side with Darlian’s guard?
“Because he’ll lie about what happened, and the only one’s who saw where servants. They don’t go against the Darlians, for reasons I can't say right now, Heero.” Duo said as Heero asked what was on his mind. “Damnit, Heero I’ll explain it later.” Duo said, turning to the Stable’s master. “Jack, can you just hide Heero until I come back, and don‘t let anyone know he‘s here.” The boy’s nodded and Duo looked back at Heero. Something ran across Duo’s violet eyes, but he said nothing running his fingers through Heero’s hair. “Just listen to them Heero.”
Heero nodded, smiling softly at Duo, who ran back to the castle. Jack turned to Heero, not touching him with his dirty hands, but gestured him further into the stables. Heero said nothing walking slowly behind the Stable’s master, but they were soon interpreted by one of the stable boys.
“Master, there’s a problem, he’s out again.” The boy huffed out as he tried to catch his breath. Jack smiled in an unamusing manner, looking down at Heero, “Wanna see the prince‘s steed?” Heero didn’t want to inform Jack that he has seen the black steed and white mare every night since Duo and Heero’s birthdays. Only the King and Queoundound it strange that the two boys’ birthdays fell on the same day, but the boys didn’t care in the lest. And Heero didn’t care that only six people remembered his birthday, or at lest presented him with a gift. The past two years he has received more gifts on the past two birthdays then in his last six before them.
This year though the Barton family gave Heero and Duo two horse a black stallion and a white mare, and one of the younger princes’, Trowa, presented to them himself. While Trowa was there Starsign was fine, but now only when Heero or Duo was with him was he calm. Though the King and Queen didn’t trust that fact, and told them that they couldn’t even see the horses for their own safety until they were broken. Now Heero didn’t want to get Duo or himself in trouble so acted as if he had never seen the barn that was hidden from view.
Soon Heero found himself in that barn in the back of the stable yards. Not even inside yet he could hear hoofs beating against anything close by. Jack opened the barn door, walking in first, where five other men where trying to restrain the midnight black steed Starsign. Jack joined them, and the six men tried to pull the angered steed into it’s stale, but the horse had other plans.
Stepping further inside Heero watched in silence, not wanting to get the way he pushed himself up against the wall. He knew that the only reason Starsign was in such a stage was because one of the new stable boys tried to get to Desiline, the white mare.
“Starsign, you bastard!” Jack yelled as he fell to the ground, but quickly stood up and repositioned himself to help.
“Beast!” One man cursed, but soon the dark horse stopped its struggle and his black eyes set on Heero. The men saw it as an opportunity and pulled hard on the rope, but it had an opposite effect. Starsign whipped to the left freeing himself of the rope, and baring his teeth as he stepped bards rds closer to Heero. Turning around to face Heero, Starsign nuzzled his chest pushing him towards the open stale.
"Boy, step slowly away from him." One of the stable boys yelled, but the child didn't understand why, Starsign only wanted him to see Desiline. Not following what the stable boy saiero ero was pushed gentle into the stale by Starsign.
"Close the door!" Jack yelled, as both Heero and Starsign made it completely inside.
"But that boy is still inre."re." The man that told Heero to stop said.
"I know, but he’ll be fine.” Jack said and they closed the stale, but Starsign didn't glance back. Heero didn't care either as he walked to the end of the long stale where his white mare was laying on the dirt floor.
She looked up, her blue eyes lighting up in excitement, but she turned her head looking for Duo. "No, Duo is not with me this time." Heero said softly. "I did bring these though." He said holding out two red apples he had taken from the dining hall. Leaning against Desiline he cut the apple in two with a knife he had also taken from the dinning hall. Starsign pulled up a piece of ground for himself in front of Heero as Heero handed Desiline a piece of apple.
Jack's head appeared on the other side of the stale, looking over in amazement at the scene before him. "Ummm... I'll tell prince Duo you're here." Jack said, and when Heero heard the barn doors close he began to speak.
"Duo read my favorite story again to me last night," Heero said happily as he handed a piece of the apple to Starsign and ran his other hand between Desiline's eyes. " The one about the lost god, if I can only remember the beginning then I tell you." Heero said softly, as Desiline shifted her head so now he ran his hands just under her ears and along her neck. His eyes widened as he remembered and started to tell the tale.
"They say a fel fell from the skies willingly. The fallen angel given as a gift unwilling from the gods to Death, to entice him to stay off of Earth, where the humans dwell. Some say the gift worked too well as other gods became jealous of Death with his fallen angel. The jealous gods provoked Death into a war by kidnapping his angel, after six years of fighting Rashid the ruler of all the gods not taking sides banished all the gods and angels involved. They say now every century the gods are reborn but only when they are named their true names..." pausing as he yawned, but went on closing his eyes... "will the finial battle take place...." another yawn, "and then the victory can return to their home."
Heero dropped the other apple that was in his hand as he fell asleep against Desiline.
*************
"Your Highness, something must be done with that child." Lady Darlian said in her politically nice voice. Duo knew there was nothing nice about her, but his father kept her around since her lands and people were nicer then she was, and more profitable.
Duo waited for his father to make his judgment, and has been for the last few hours. There was nothing more he could do, Duo had already told his side of the story and surprisingly one of the servants had told the truth. Duo knew that Lady Darlian bribed most of the servants to spy for her, but luckily her evil touch hasn't branched out through out the whole castle.
"Yes, Lady Darlian," his father started off, "Something must be done, and since, thanks to you're advice on the day of Odin's death. I haot bot been able to raise the child to respect the Court or those in it. I believe your words were "he'll have revenge on us all if he given enough power," I won't go on into what else you said Lady, cause it's not appropriate for our children to hear." His father said gesturing to Relena and Duo, but Duo was at a lost.
/We killed Heero's dad, but father said that he escaped. Heero still believes that his father is out there waiting for him. Can I tell him what really happened?/ Duo thought, but he couldn't answer himself.
"You do not have to remind me on what I said, your Highness. I am merely saying now..."
"Lady Darlian, I told my old friend that I would care for his child like my own. I have not lived up to that promise, but the boy still is loyal to my son. Starting tomorrow, Heero will be given lessons to prepare him to be the next king's First Chair. That is all I have to say on the matter Lady Darlian." Duo's father stood up, but stopped as he started to walk out of the room. "And Lady Darlian if you every harm my son or Heero again, I will have you skinned alive."
Duo watched as his father left with his mother and his own first chair walking out with them. All talking in hush voices. Still in shock at the hearing of what just happened, Heero was just given the next highest position next to the king Duo stood with his feet planted to the ground.
Looking out the window Duo saw the darkening skies and realized that they had been here for hours. Rushing out of the throne room, Duo ran as fast as his growing legs would take him to the stables. Knowing that no one was able to find Heero since he wasn't thrown in the room with them meant that his plan had worked to keep Heero out of Lady Darlian's clutches.
"Jack where's Heero?" Duo asked catching his breath as he leaned up against one of the walls.
"He's with Starsign and Desiline. I take it you know where they are." He said suspiciously, but Duo only heard part of his words as he yelled his thanks and ran off towards the barn.
Dark black eyes met him as he opened the door, "You know if Jack knew you could open these doors he would have kittens." Duo said as he scratched the black steed over the flat of his face.
Stepping inside he found Heero asleep against Desiline who looked up at him with her own hello in her blue eyes. "I am sorry Des, but my mom's going to want to talk to us both as soon as possible." He said picking the smaller child up. Heero looked so calm, unlike earlier there was a look in his eyes, a look of closer to death then Duo would ever like to see in his eyes again. The same childlike cobalt eyes that had always looked up at him with were gone, but it was only for an instant. It had to be his imagination.
Tracking back to his room, wasn't all to bad. All the years of practicing with his Weapon's master have made him stronger, but Heero still wasn't light as a feather. Duo thought, as Heero curintointo mumbling something in his dreams.
Back to his room, where as expected his mother was sitting in the candle lit room waiting for him. Duo placed the still sleeping Heero on his bed, and went to sit closer to his mother.
"Mother," Duo said, greeting her as he sat down.
"Duo, the two of you can't go running into this kinda of trouble anymore." She said in concern.
"We didn't go looking for this, Mother." Duo said defensively.
"I know, Duo. I am just warning you. Now more then ever you have to watch your back. Darlian is not going to like the fact that Heero's going to have more power then her when you're made king." She said urgently, pulling Duo's hands into hers.
"Mother, I already know." Duo said, and then turned his head slightly. "But if the Darlian's are such a pain, mother, why do you keep here."
"You've heard your father say 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer'." She said rising her eyebrows.
"Yes, but if father and Heero's father were friends why was there a war and why did we kill him?" Duo inquired.
"Sweetie, we don't even know why Odin started the war, and Lord Darlian wanted Odin killed before we could question him." She stood up, and walked towards the door.
"Mother do you know what the Darlian's are up to?"
"I have an idea, but it's only an idea." She said walking out of the room. Duo stood up, he was hungry, tired and wanted to a bath, but it didn't have to be it that order. Knowing that Heero hasn't eaten either he called on of the servants to bring him dinner for two.
Half an hour later Duo walked from the bathing room that connected to his room, and saw Heero awake and eating his food. His blue eyes looking over at Duo as he placed his fork on the plate. "Duo, what are they going to do to me?" He asked his eyes looked his age for once in their fear.
"You're going to my First Chair." Duo said smiling as he sat across from Heero and began to eat himself.
"But...." "Don't think about Heero, let's just keep it how it is." Duo said cutting Heero off, who just smiled and went on eating. Duo began to speak of his horrid lessons, and they feel back into their pattern of their daily lives.
It wasn't until later on that night when they both had fallen asleep after one of their many games did a black crow look in through the window. Brown eyes narrowing at the sight, but she didn't have time to glare at the sleeping boys. There would be time for that later, but now she had to return to her master.
