Summary: The Bladebreakers have a new member. But what does this mean for Kai and Rei's relationship? And what secrets does he have to hide? Lemon in other chapters. KaixRei, ReixOC, with a dash of TysonxMax.

SoulSister: Apparently the general consensus is that Rei should not die... although I am still open to sugestions to the contrary. And I think you'll be glad to hear that Xan will be playing a bigger role i the story than breaking up Kai and Rei... a FAR bigger role, though I am not obliged to tell you now. (Isn't it fun to be an author?)

Lucinda Mooyman: Fine, fine! I'll leave Rei alive... though barely. *evil grin* I'm also considering another idea: alternate endings.

*smoke clears*

God(dess) of Angst: Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

trueangel: Dramatic entrances...

Angst: *booming voice* Someone summoned me?

trueangel: I did... I need to add angst into my story.

Angst: You've got the right god(dess). How about killing off one of the main characters?

trueangel: The reviewers are against that. Anyway I want to start with something light.

Angst: You're wasting my services... but I'll help you all the same. Take this. *hands trueangel a pink package with kitten ears*

trueangel: Pink? *groan*

Angst: Summon me again if you need more angst! *disappears in a blaze of fireworks*

trueangel: More theatrics... *hesistantly opens package* Wha-? YOU!!! *throws package with contents offstage*

Rei: *rubs sore arms* Urgh... I don't feel like going shopping now...

trueangel: You have to! It's part of the script!

Kai: Hey, leave Rei alone! *massages Rei's shoulders* I'm sorry I pulled so hard... *glares at Rumi-chan* Are you feeling better?

Rei: Yeah, I'm ok... let's go prepare for our shopping scene.

trueangel: Wait, it's your turn to do the disclaimer.

Kai: I'll do it for him. trueangel doesn't own. *walks off with Rei*

trueangel: My, aren't we getting posessive... btw, this chapter spoils the X2 story, so you might want to head down to your nearest movie theater, get a ticket, watch X2 if you haven't (and if it's still showing), then come back to read this chapter. You have been warned. Ok, let's get this show on the road. I call this chapter... *glances at pink package's contents* I call it

Chapter 4 The Cat Comes Calling

Kai and Rei walked out of the theater, having just watched X2. They were chattering excitedly about the movie.

"So? How did you like it?" asked Rei.

"It was wonderful. I'm really glad I came out with you today," answered Kai.

"It was a pity Jean had to die in the end though..."

"Well, at least she died for her friends." *I wonder if Rei would die for me,* Kai thought.

The two of them talked as they walked around the shopping mall. It was the largest near their resort, and they had a few hours to waste. It was about 3 p.m., and they were planning to return after having dinner there. The two of them walked past a hobby store, and something caught Kai's eye.

"Hey! This shop sells Magic cards!" Kai exclaimed.

"I didn't know you pl Mag Magic: the Gathering."

"I used to, but stopped after..." There followed an uneasy silence.

"But I tho... ... you had forgotten your life then."

"Most of it. But there are some parts I remember." Kai decided to lighten the sombre mood. "Come on, let's go in to buy some cards."

Kai bought two Scourge booster packs. He let Rei open one while he opened the other.

"It's interesting to see how the game's changed after so many years... Nope, nothing particularly good here. Anything interesting, Rei?"

"Well, the rare card is a card called Upwelling..."

"Let me see... Wow! This is a good card. Thanks, Rei!"

Rei shrugged. "Guess I just got lucky."

Kai stuffed the cards into his pocket. "Well, where do we go next?"

"Hmm... Hey, why don't we go buy some clothes?"

"Clothes? I don't know..."

"Come on, Kai. I'll help you pick out some really nice ones."

"Seeing that we have nothing else to do... ok."

Rei dragged Kai over to the clothes shop. There, Kai stood at one side while watching Rei pick out the perfect clothes for him. *We each have different interests, personalities and styles," Kai thought. *But yet we're a really great couple. Perhaps love thrives on individuality.*

"Kai!"

Kai was jerked out of his thoughts. "Huh?"

"Try these on. I think they'll look good on you."

"For your sake, I sure hope sKai Kai smiled as he entered the changing room.

Rei stood impatiently outside the door. He could wait to see how Kai would look. *It doesn't matter what he wears,* Rei thought. *He stiloks oks amazing.* Rei heard the door unlock, and was stunned by the result. The dark crimson sleeveless tee, while bringing out the colour of his eyes, also highlighted Kai's beautiful muscles built up from endless beyblading. It had a picture of a phoenix in front, symbolic of Dranzer. The light blue jeans gave Kai that I-am-tough-so-you-better-watch-out look, and Kai indeindeed a strong competitor. Kai still wore his belt with the silver buckle, but he had taken off his scarf.

"How is it?" Kai asked.

"Wait, there's one last piece." Rei handed Kai a navy blue leather jacket. "Put it on."

Kai obeyed. "So how do I look now?"

"Like a god."

Kai smiled. "Thanks."

"Change back into your old clothes. We'll keep this a surprise for the others."

Kai went back into the room. After changing his clothes, they walke the the counter to pay for . Th. They were about to walk out when...

"Rei!"

Rei spun around.

"Mariah! What a surprise to see you here!"

"Hi, Kai! Rei, you did so well at the World Championships!"

"Umm... Rei? I'll be at the beylade shop. We'll meet there in an hour. I'll leave the two of you alone to catch up."

"Ok, Kai. Hey, let me carry that for you," Rei offered, pointing to the bag of clothes he had just bought.

"Oh, thanks." Saying that, Kai walked off.

*One hour later*

After watching the last two amateur bladers battle, Kai walked to the outside of the beyblade shop and looked around. Still no sign of Rei. He looked at his watch. It was already an hour. *Rei had probably forgotten about the time,* Kai told himself. *Well, I might as well go find him.* Holding the bag of beyblade parts he had bou Kai Kai walked back to the clothes shop, hoping to find Rei there.

*Meanwhile*

Rei and Mariah were standing near the back of the clothes shop. Every movement and action since they parted having been accounted for, every event described to the last detail, they looked into each other's eyes silently.

"Rei... I've missed you."

"Me too, Mariah."

"Rei... I have to tell you somethin"
"

"What?"

"I don't know how to say.." .."

"I won't mind if you don't want to say it, but you can just tell me. I won't laugh or anything."

"Rei... I love you."

Rei's body froze at those words. "Mariah, I have always treated you as a good friend and a sister."

"No! After all these years, surely you feel something for me..."

"Mariah, I..."

"Shh. Listen to your heart, Rei. What does it say?"

"I love... someone." Rei was afraid to admit his love for Kai.

Mariah smiled and leaned forward, kissing Rei gently on the lips. She waited for a while, but Rei did not respond. Taking that as permission to go further, Mariah sucked softly on Rei's lips...

"Rei!"

Rei jerked his head around, breaking the kiss.

"Kai!"

Kai dropped his things, turned around and ran. *Why...* Kai cried helplessly to no one. *Rei, why?*

"Kai, wait! Kai!" Rei shouted after Kai's retreating figure, but it was of no use.

"Why...?" Mariah's cat-like eyes suddenly widened in realisation. "So you and Kai..."

"When I said I loved someone, I didn't mean you, I wss talking about Kai. I just didn't dare to tell you."

"Oh, Rei, I'm so sorry," Mariah sobbed. "I never meant to... I just thought..."

"What's done cannot be undone," Rei comforted Mariah, though there was no mistaking that slight harshness in his voice. "What we need to do now is find Kai."

The two of them walked out of the mall as Rei gave Mariastrustructions.

"Go to the resort and find the Bladebreakers. We're at room C452. Tell them that... that Kai has gone missing. I'll go search for him first. Tell them I'll be back by nighttime." Having reached the exit, Rei flagged down a taxi and told the driver the address of the resort. "Hurry!" he urged the driver.

As the taxi drove off into the distance, Rei ran in the direction which Kai went, all the while blaming himself. *I'm sorry, Kai, I'm sorry...*

*Elsewhere*

Why? The question ehcoed in Kai's head endlessly, haunted him restlessly as he ran, just ran. He was vaguely aware that Rei was chasing him, but he didn't care. All he wanted to do was to run. he didn't care where he was running to, he just wanted to run, run away from the voice in his head, run away from the fact that his emotions had betrayed him...

-Flashback-

"You summoned me, Grandfather?"

"Yes. I want to talk to you."

"About what, sir?"

"Boris teme tme that you have been hanging out a lot with Tala lately."

"Well, he is my friend, and..."

"Friend?"

"I feel happy when I'm with him. We play together, laugh together..."

"You feel happy?"

"I..."

Voltaire stood up coldly. Kai noticed the whip he was holding in his hand. Without warning, he lashed at Kai.

"Emotions are useless! Emotions are a weakness! Friendship! Happiness! Love! All these will only hinder you in your road to become the best beyblader. Only concentrate on winning and nothing else. Emotions... they will be your downfall!"

-Endshbashback-

Emotions... they had betrayed him. He had dared to love, and he paid dearly for it. How could he be so naive as to think that Rei would love him? Him, a cold-hearted ruthless competitor? He realised that all Rei wanted to do was to use him, to m ake fun of him, to exploit him... The only person Rei would ever love was Mariah, he should have known that long ago. He was blinde, ag, again, emotions. Emotions... they had been his downfall.

Kai noticed that he was turning into a familiar street, but he was too tired to even think. Too tired, too exhausted... his footsteps slowed, slowed, and finally stopped as he collasped from all the exhaustion, rage and anger.

*At room C452*

Tyson and Max were sitting on the sofa, watching cartoons. With their arms around each other's shoulder, they were sitting a little too close for mere friends, but Kenny and Xan were too occupied with discussing the earlier battle to notice.

"Hey, they're showing Pokemon now!" Tyson exclaimed.

"Ugh. I hate that show," Max replied, making a face.

"Hey, it's a nice show," Tyson retorted. He then started to hum to the opening theme. "You teach me and I teach you..." (Yeah, I know this is Season 1, VERY old)

"I can see Ash teaches you how to dress..."

"What do you mean?" Tyson glared at Max.

"Red cap, that vest... You two could pass for twins."

"Considering how much you hate Pokemon, would that be an insult?"

"Coerinering how much you like Pokemon, you could pretend that was praise."

"You are so gonna pay for this." Tyson picked up a cushion and threw it at Max, hitting him in the chest.

"Let's see who gets the last laugh!" Max threw the cushion back into Tyson's face.

Their quarrel soon exploded into a giant cushion fight. Even Kenny and Xan, two innocent bystanders, were hit in the process. However, they just threw the cushions back and continued with theircusscussion. Sooysonyson and Max were both worn out. Max slumped down into the sofa, while Tyson collapsed onto his lap. They both panted as they tried to catch their breaths.

"When's Kai and Rei coming back?" Tyson grumbled. "I'm hungry."

"You're hungry already? We just had lunch! Anyway, Kai and Rei aren't coming back for dinner."

Just then, they heard the doorbell ring.

"I wonder who could that be?" Max asked.

"I'll get the door." Tyson stood up and walked over to the door, opening it.

"Mariah! What brings you here?"

"Oh hi, Tyson."

"If you're looking for Rei," Max said, "He went out."

"Oh, no, I'm not looking for him. I saw him just now, he told me to tell you guys that Kai has disappeared."

"What?"

"Well, I was to blame, since..."

"No time for explanations," Xan said, grabbing a map of the region. "Kai can't have gone far on foot, so we'll search the vicinity." Xan divided the map into 3 sections. "Tyson and Max, you search this area. Mariah, you search here. I'll go to this region, while Kenny will stay in case Kai comes back. We'll meet here at about..." Xan glanced at the clock. "... 5 p.m."

"Ok, erm..." Mariah stopped not knowing Xan's name.

"I'm Xan. But introductions later. Kai is usually cool and composed... who knows what he might do when he explodes like this. So we need to hurry."

The four of them rushet oft of the room, all searching for their friend.

Angst: Mwahaha! Lots of angst to go around!

trueangel: -_-* Why did you come back?

Angst: To make sure that you do not deviate from the path that I have set.

trueangel: But I am the author...

Angst: I know. Therefore I'm possessing your body so that I have full control over what you write. *enters trueangel's body*

trueangel: Ok, so this chapter ends with a lost Kai, a damaged relationship and a malevolent ghost...

Angst: GOD(DESS)!!!

trueangel: Fine, god(dess) of indeterminate gender residing within my body... and things can only get worse in the next chapter, so stay tuned and remember to review! And I'm still open to opinions on whether Rei should die!

Angst: I need to work on your end sequences... but I'll let this pass.
