Chapter 4 The Mighty Drifter

"Gary, you need to work on your defence," Lee said. "Your atack is very good, but if the opponent manages to evade you then you're in big trouble. An, Re, Rei! Nice to have you back."

"Hi, Lee!" Rei greeted in response.

"I've been waiting to train with you. I can't wait to see how much better you are now."

"Well, since I'm getting rusty, why not?"

Rei and Lee both stepped up to the dish, while Kai silently rooted for Rei.

"3, 2, 1," Kevin shouted. "LET IT RIP!"

Lee's black Galeon and Rei's grey Driger both flew into the dish. The two former teammates wasted no time in getting the action started.

"Galeon, Tiger Claw attack!"

The black beyblade streaked accross the dish flying at the grey one, and looked ready to deliver a crushing blow when Driger evaded at the last moment.

"There's no way you're gonna use my own move against me! Driger, show him what a real Tiger Claw is!"

The white tiger, Driger, burst out of Rei's beyblade and lunged at Galeon.

"Galeon, don't let him get you down!"

A black lion burst out of Lee's beyblade. Galeon quickly swerved to the side, avoiding Rei's attack.

"I seen your Tiger Claw more than enough times to know how it works. You'll need more than that to get me down! Galeon, Black Lightning!"

Galeon executed its Black Lightning attack with stunning force, sending Driger flying, almost knocking it out of the dish. Kai's heart skipped a beat. Luckily, Rei regained control at the last minute, and using the gravitational force due to the slope of the dish, sent Driger ng bng back at Galeon. However, Galeon still managed to get out of the way.

"Not bad, but you'll still need more to bring me down!"

"You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but you can definitely teach a cat some! Driger, Tiger Roar attack!"

Kai quickly covered his ears, knowing what was coming. The others didn't. Driger let out an earsplitting roar, causing everyone except Kai and Rei to flinch. The powerful soundwaves, though not as strong as a full attack, managed to destabilise Galeon.

"Wha-?"

"Tiger Clawll pll power!"

"Galeon, evade!"

But it was too late. Rei's Driger slammed into Lee's Galeon, sending it flying out of the dish. Suddenly, Uncle Lin snatched it out of the air, saving it from the rock it was flying straight at. He handed it back to Lee.

"That was great, Rei," Uncle Lin commended. "I see you've improved a lot."

"Yeah..." Rei admitted. "And where did you learn that Tiger Roar move? It's awesome."

"Well, you could say I had some encouragement from Kai..."

"Oh, hi, Kai." Lee still couldn't forget the time when Kai had stolen so many bit beasts. "What brings you here?"

"Umm... I'm just following Rei around for now."

"Umm, Kai?" Hui started. "Could I battle you? I really want to see how good you are, to be the captain of the world's champion team."

"Definitely."

Kai had been looking forward to battling Hui as well. The two bladers took the places of Lee and Rei at the dish. Rei began the countdown as the two of them held out their launchers.

"3, 2, 1, LET IT RIP!"

"Go Dranzer!"

"Go, Drifter Titan!"

Kai's blue beyblade and Hui's black beyblade flew into the stone dish, and started circling each other. Hui's beyblade appeared to be moving much slower, so Kai quickly seized the chance to launch his assault.

"Flamethrower attack, Dranzer! There's no way you can evade my attacks at this speed!"

"I don't have to evade! Drifter, Repulse!"

Dranzer slammed into Drifter, but it remained unharmed. Instead, Dranzer was the one that was thrown backwards by its attack.

"How-" Rei gasped.

"Drifter is an extly hly heavy beyblade," Mariah explained. "Besides having a metal body and a thick weight disk, it also has 9 metal ball bearings. 4 are free to move in the base, and give the blade added momentum when it is spinning. 4 are placed nearer to the bottom, helping to lower the centre of gravity. They can also act as the blade tips themselves on sloped surfaces. The last one serves as the usual blade tip, and can rotate freely to provide a smooth movement. This weight advantage increases Drifter's defensive abilities so much that it can even reflect attacks."

"I see... but won't the speed and attack power be lowered because of this?"

"Speed definitely, as you can see from the battle. But not attack. In fact, the weight helps boost the strength of the attack. You'll see later."

Meanwhile, the battle was raging Kai Kai tried launching many more attacks on Drifter, but Hui remained defensive, rendering Kai's assault useless. If anything, Dranzer seemed to have come out worse from its own attacks, after having Drifter reflect them. Right now, Kai was having Dranzer circle the dish, trying to find another strategy to break Drifter's defences.

"If that's all you've got to throw at me, then I might as well end this quickly," Hui said. "Drifter, Titan Fist!"

The black beyblade moved towards Dranzer, but it was slow enough for Dranzer to avoid it easily.

"It doesn't have time to prepare a Repulse! Dranzer, Fire Arrows!"

"Drifter, come out now!"

Hui's bit beast, a large gorilla with black fur and leathery skin, burst out of the black beyblade.

"Dranzer, go!"

Kai's phoenix emerged from his beyblade. Emitting a sharp shriek, it sent a stream of burning arrows at Drifter.

"Drifter, Survival Anchor!"

Drifter dug a massive fist into the ground. When Dranzer's assault connected, it easily shrugged it off, and effortlessly mantained its position and stability.

"The tables are on you now, Kai! Drifter, Titan Fist!"

Dranzer tried to evade the assault, but it was still recovering from its own attack. Drifter's giant fist slammed into Dranzer with tremendous power. It would hsharsharttered the beyblade had Hui not slowed down at the last moment. However, it was still strong enough to send Dranzer flying back at Kai.

"You... you could have defeated me all along!" Kai exclaimed, shocked at the power of Drifter's attack. "Why didn't you?"

"I wanted to see how powerful you are. I must admit, you are pretty good. Most other people just throw out their most powerful attacks, thinking of overwhelming Drifter, but ultimately cause thier own defeat without me having to move a finger."

"Just curious..." Rei asked. "Have you ever beenten,ten, when using Drifter?"

"No, but that doesn't mean I'm invincible. All blades have their weaknesses. When you make one thing stronger, you have to sacrifice something else. Speed, in my case. My speed is so slow that a good endurance blade with good evasive capabilities will easily outlast me."

"A fast blade... Hui, could I have a rematch?"

"Why? It will be difficult for Dranzer to beat me, as you already saw."

"Not if I use another blade."

"Kai, you're not thinking..." Rei trailed off.

Kai pulled out a silver beyblade, gripping it tightly in his hand.

"The bit beast's gone, of course... but I could always replace it with Dranzer."

"A new beyblade? Well, I could give it a try. Fine, I accept your challenge," Hui said.

Kai removed the bit chip of his own Dranzer, and placed it in the beyblade of his fallen brother.

"Xan... this game's for you."

"3, 2, 1," Kevin shouted. "LET IT RIP!"

"Drifter, go!"

"Dreamer-Dranzer, you can do it!"

Hui's black beyblade and Kai's silver one flew into the dish. Kai did not try to execute Xan's Shatter attack, however. He knew very well that it wouldn't affect Drifter in the slightest. What he had to do was outlast Drifter, as Hui had said.

"Well, I won't hold back this time! Drifter, go!"

Hui's gorilla came out of its bit chip, roaring and ready for another battle.

"Dranzer, you come out as well!"

Kai's phoenix emerged in a burst of flames, but it looked different. Instead of crimson red, its feathers had turned pearly white, like those of an angel.

"White Dranzer," Rei commented. (A/N: In case you can't remember, the one in "Angel and Devil" was Light Dranzer.)

"Colour variations of a bit beast aren't uncommon," Mariah said. "Many believe that the beyblade itself affects the bit beast as well."

"Drifter, Titan Fist!"

Drifter lunged at White Dranzer with a powerful fist.

"Angelic Wind attack now!"

White Dranzer held its position as Drifter approached. However, at the last moment, it disappeared, reappearing at the other end of the dish.

"I see you're heeding my advice. But can Dranzer last long enough? Drifter, Survival Anchor!"

Drifter dug its fist into the ground, and Hui's beyblade started spinning on the spot.

"Dranzer, Spiral Survivor!"

Dranzer too switched into an endurance mode, and now it was a battle of who could last the longest. Soon, Dranzer seemed torunnrunning out of steam.

"Dranzer's spin is slowing down, Kai. Looks like I'm gonna be the winner."

"Watch and learn. Dranzer, Angelic Wind!"

Dranzer started spinning around, creating a whirlwind around itself. The beyblade's speed increased once more, putting Dranzer back into the race. Soon, it was Drifter's turn to slow down. However, there was nothing Hui could do, and his beyblade eventually stopped. Hui stooped down to pick it up, as Kai did the same.

"That was a good battle. You've proven that strategy plays a part as well in beyblade battles," Hui applauded Kai, shaking his hand.

"Thanks. Couldn't have done it without your help," Kai said, accepting the handshake.

"Guys? I'm gonna call for a break," Lee said. "Most of us have been training since morning."

"I brought food," Uncle Lin said. "I'm sure Lee, Gary, Kevin and Hui haven't eaten."

"Thanks, Uncle," Hui said.

Soon, the four hungry beybladers had finished their food. Uncle Lin had returned to the village. Kai sat at one corner, watching the other 5 bladers talk and reminisce old times. After some hesitation, Kai finally decided that this was the best time to find out more about Hui. He walked over to him.

"Umm... Hui? Could I talk to you for a moment?"

"Sure. I have something to tell you as well. Let's go to someplace private, shall we?"

"Ok."

The two of them walked some distance into the bushes, before stopping to talk.

"You go first," Hui said.

"Well, I don't know where to start... Who are you? Why do you know Ancient Seraphish?"

"I see you are worried about Volten's return... I'm sorry I cannot tell you my identity, but I have a message for you from Light Dranzer."

"Light Dranzer? How-"
