Follow me?
“Has Winry already gathered all of her belongings?” Ed asked pulling on his red coat.
“Yes I think,” Al answered, “she’s really exited about going to Rushvalley.”
“That’s because she’s an automail freak,” Ed scoffed picking up his own suitcase.
“If she wasn’t your automail wouldn’t be as good as it is, brother.” Al reminded Ed.
Ed just shrugged.
“You mean good as in broken two times in less than a month?” Ed asked sarcastically but he didn’t really mean it.
After all the automail wasn’t really made for the kind of use he put on it. He had seen the worried look on Winry’s face when she’d been fixing the arm. There were scratches all over the arm and it was a new one too. She didn’t like the idea of him fighting. Not like he or Al had many chances to avoid dangerous situations.
“I wouldn’t say that when she can hear you brother.” Al said, but Ed could hear that he was amused.
“Come on. We should go now before she gets impatient.” Al said.
“Yeah I guess.” Ed said looking out of the hospital window.
He hadn’t seen Envy since he’d visited the hospital the day before. He wondered where the weird guy was now. It was annoying when he could see Envy but it was worse when the other wasn’t around. Not like he missed the creep or anything, but he knew Envy was following him and it was unnerving to feel the eyes on his back.
“Are you coming?” Al asked.
Ed shook his head and turned away from the window. It wasn’t like he even wanted Envy’s company. He walked out of the door following his little brother.
***
What Edward didn’t know was that Envy wasn’t following him at the moment. He had other things to do. Other things he had to do.
Like murder…
Envy changed back into his usual shape and looked at the dead body of lieutenant colonel Hughes.
“Still as cruel as ever, Envy.” he heard Lust comment from the shadows.
“Gotta get my amusement from somewhere, Lust. Though I thought that you could’ve taken care of him by yourself.” Envy answered turning around to face his partner in crime.
Lust just shrugged. Looking at the corpse expressionlessly.
“Let’s get out of here before the humans come.” she said turning around.
“Guess you’re right. But wasn’t it your job to watch that the military doesn’t get any more information than they already have?” Envy asked following the woman.
“He was smarter than we thought and that Fullmetal boy isn’t helping either with all that information digging he’s been doing,” Lust said. “but that’s taken care of now.”
“Hmmm that is true. But I expect that you’ll keep things better under control from now on,” Envy said idly, “and speaking of the Fullmetal boy… I need to catch up with him.”
That earned a pointed look from Lust.
“This is apparently one of the few things you take seriously,” she said dryly. “just remember what you’re supposed to do.”
“I won’t forget.” Envy said letting the smile disappear.
***
They were in a train again. It was undoubtedly the best way to travel from one place to another but it didn’t take the dullness of the trip away. You can only play poker so much. Besides Al was keeping a close eye on him because he suspected that his dear brother was cheating. The fact that Ed really did cheat was unimportant. But for now Ed would’ve given anything to get the disturbing thoughts out of his head.
The last day had been hectic. Ed had to say that he was more than a little annoyed when his watch was stolen but that wasn’t really anything compared to the feeling he got when Winry told him she’d opened the watch… that was something even worse. And yet he didn’t have the heart to say anything bad to the girl.
So what if it was something he hadn’t shown even to his brother who just happened to be the most important person to him? And so what if had told her time and time again that he didn’t want her to open the watch? She hadn’t meant to do anything bad.
Despite telling himself all that he couldn’t help feeling even worse. She should’ve known better than to do that. But she didn’t…
But that wasn’t the only thing that bothered him… He hadn’t seen or even felt his stalker anywhere. Did that mean that Envy had broken his promise to protect them? And if so did that mean that Ed could break his promises as well? Still it worried him. Envy might be his enemy but it was safer to know where he was than to not know. He was also thinking that he should’ve told Alphonse about Envy.
But with someone like Envy it was better to not take any unnecessary risks. Alphonse’s safety was his first priority.
“Why are you so quiet?” Al asked snapping Ed from his thoughts.
“It’s…” Ed was going to say ‘nothing’ but lying to Al wouldn’t accomplish anything, “I think we’re being followed.”
Al was not stupid enough to turn around and try to look for their supposed follower.
“Why do you think so?” he asked instead.
“It’s just a feeling. I had it in Central but when we got to Rushvalley it went away. But since we boarded the train the feeling has come back.” Ed said.
And it was true. The one thing he was uncertain about was if the follower was Envy this time. It could be that woman this time… or another person who bore the mark of the ouroboros. It didn’t necessarily have to be Envy.
“And you’re feeling it now?” Al asked carefully.
Ed nodded.
“I think… I have an idea who it might be but I’m not sure,” he continued hesitantly.
“Who do you suspect?” Al asked.
Ed was going to answer when they were interrupted.
“Excuse me but is this place free?” asked an elderly gentleman indicating the seat beside Ed.
Ed was going to say that no it was not, but always polite Alphonse beat him.
“Yes it is. Please sit down if you want to.” Al said politely.
“Thank you, young man.” the old man said sitting down.
Ed glared but didn’t say anything. The man prevented him from telling Alphonse more about Envy. Ed narrowed his eyes and looked at the man closely. However, he was nothing like Envy. Suddenly the man turned and looked at him.
“Is there something wrong?” he asked surprised.
“No nothing… I’m sorry for being so rude.” Ed answered.
It couldn’t be Envy. Maybe it was one of his friends. No maybe it was just a random old man.
“Oh do not worry about it.” the man said smiling warmly.
***
They had been on the train for a while and the man had apparently fallen asleep. Ed was staring out of the window feeling bored. He really wanted to talk to Alphonse alone but the man prevented that.
“I’m going to take a walk. It’ll still take a few hours before we reach Dublith. Do you want me to get you something to eat while I’m at it?” Al asked getting up.
“Yeah bring me something if it’s not too much trouble,” Ed answered, “just not milk.”
“Brother,” Al said disapprovingly.
“You know I hate it,” Ed said giving his brother his best puppy eyes look.
Unfortunately it wasn’t very good since of the two brothers Al had been better at it when they were small. But Al relented anyway.
“I won’t bring you any milk then.” Al said nodding.
Ed watched his brother walk away. He sighed, looking at the man that was still sleeping beside him. It was so boring and it’d still take a few hours before they finally arrived. On the other hand it was good thing since their sensei would not be happy to see them.
“What’s so bad about milk then, o-chi-bi-san?”
Ed turned around fast and looked around. It had definitely been Envy’s voice but he couldn’t see the man anywhere. In fact the only people in the train car were a family few seats away and a pair of girls that were sitting near the doors. Now that Ed was looking at them he saw that they were reading something and had stuffed paper up their noses. Weird…
“Envy?” Ed finally asked.
The man who had been sleeping opened his eyes and smiled. Ed’s eyes widened. He knew that smile.
“Didn’t I tell you to keep my presence a secret?” the man asked.
Ed shook his head. It wasn’t possible… or maybe it was. After all he’d seen that woman –Lust?- use her nails to cut metal. Why couldn’t Envy have some special skill too?
“Hmm what are you thinking?” Envy asked.
“Nothing.”
He heard a faint sound that almost resembled the sound of alchemical reaction and it really was Envy sitting beside him. The first thing that crossed his mind was a wave of relief. He was relieved that it was Envy who had been following him and not some new psycho or one of Envy’s companions.
“Hmm soo~ ochibi-chan,” Envy said changing the tone of his voice suddenly. “did you miss me while I was gone?”
“Of course not! I was hoping you’d stay away,” Ed answered immediately throwing a potent glare towards the other. “but I felt you watching me.”
“Are you sure it was me all the time? Those two girls over there have been watching you too. And I think that they’re more dangerous than me at the moment,” Envy said pointing at the girls.
Ed looked at the girls and had to agree. One of them was drooling.
“So you did miss me then,” Envy said turning his attention back to the blonde boy. “you deny it but I can see you did miss me.”
“Didn’t you hear what I just said? I did not miss you.” Ed said angrily.
“So you didn’t miss me but you were hoping it’d be me following you,” Envy said smirking cupping Ed’s face with his hands.
Ed blushed. He had been hoping that and he had had good reason to hope for it. He didn’t know Envy but he wasn’t a stranger either. And… Envy had kept the promise.
“You’re trying to confuse me aren’t you?” Ed asked suspiciously.
Envy just smiled like he usually did. And Ed had to admit that he was confused. Envy was an enemy but he was also protecting them and… Nothing made sense. He wasn’t supposed to feel relieved or even remotely happy to see the other man. He shook his head trying to clear his head. It didn’t help.
“Stop smiling like that.” Ed growled.
“Why? I missed you and I’m happy to see you again. Isn’t that worth smiling?” Envy asked.
“You…?” Ed asked getting more and more bewildered.
Envy smirked leaning so close that their noses were almost touching. Ed tried to back away from the other but it was useless since he was trapped between the wall and Envy’s body.
“I like following you,” Envy said. “and you like it too. You like the knowledge that I’m always somewhere near watching your back.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Ed said feeling his face heat up more.
“Hmmm? But I’m serious, Edward-kun.” Envy said.
Envy’s eyes flickered to look at the door and Ed did so too. They could both hear the heavy hollow footsteps coming nearer. Suddenly Envy grabbed his face and pressed a quick light kiss on his lips. When Alphonse opened the door to the car they were in Envy had changed back to his old man disguise. Ed was still pressed against the window in shock.
“Are you okay brother?” Al asked worriedly walking over to his seat.
“I… yeah I’m okay.” Ed finally answered slumping against the wall.
If he had been confused before he was now absolutely perplexed. Had he just been kissed? By Envy?
“I’m okay, Al. Don’t worry about me.”
Both of the brothers missed Envy’s satisfied smirk.
