Here I am again…….. Standard disclaimers apply: I do not own and will never own *sigh* so gos life. But I can pretend. Enjoy! And I apologize in advance for any typos that may occur in advance.. I suck at proof reading . Also I am bastardizing Treize in this story so all you Treize fans I do apologize, but he was a bastard in beg beginning of the series if you remember. Chapter 4

Duo’s story:

Duo pulled back from her and looked away.
“Sorry….. I didn’t mean to wake you or………to cry like a girl. Men aren’t suppose to cry. Now you think I’m weak.”
Hilde reached out and grasped his shoulder. “I hardly think you are weak. And tears are healthy, weather you are a man or woman.” She paused as she tried to get him to look at her. “What were you dreaming of?”
“Nothing.” He said softly. “ I can’t involve you. It’s dangerous. He’s dangerous. You‘ll hate me..”
Another flash of lighting filled the room, along with a loud rumble of thunder. Duo shivered and wrapped his arms around himself.
“ I hardly think that I’ll hate you. You can tell me, Duo. I’ll not judge you. It’s not my place anyway. We all have things in our pasts that we would like to forget or change if we could.”
He looked over at her and smiled slightly, then shook his head.
“OK. When ever you are ready, I’ll listen.” She stood and walked toward the door. She shook her head, “ I think I need to find you some clothes, you are quite a distraction.”
Duo glanced down and blushed at his nakedness. He pulled the blankets up as Hilde giggled.
“It’s ok, I kinda like the view.”
His blush ame ame deeper. “Miss…. Hilde….?”
She stopped at the door and turned slightly. “Yes?”
“Got some tea or coffee?”
She nodded and slipped out the door to prepare some. Hilde hurried to restoke the stove, peering out the window at the rain coming down. She could hear it pounding on her porch. She turned back as she heard Mutt whine and disappear into the bedroom. Heading for under the bed, no doubt, she thought.
As soon as the water was hot she poured it over the grounds and allowed it to seep. She carried the coffee with a small amount of sugar, on a tray into the room.
She slipped it on the night stand and handed him a cup.
He took a sip and smiled at her. “ You make good coffee. And I owe you something of an explanation”
She shook her head. “No, you don’t , really.”
He nodded, andped ped again. “You have been kind to me. I can remember only kindness one other time when I was very young.” He paused, abruptly becoming serious. “ My father sold me.”
Hilde’s eyes shot open. “What?!”
“He sold me.” He looked up at her slowly, afraid of what he would see. He was surprised to see anger then compassion.
“Why in god’s name did he do that?”
“Because he hated me.”
“I…..”
“He swore it was my fault mother died. I loved my mother, but she got sick and died. Cholera, I think it was. The day after we buried her, he sold me to Treize. I had a sister, too. He sold her to Treize, too.”
Hilde watched Duo’s face, seeing the deep sadness there.
“Where is she now?”
He shook his head. “I don’t know. She was sold again shortly after Treize took us. I….. Father sold us for $200 and a bottle of whisky! I hope he is dead!” Duo growled, with a great deal of animosity.
Hilde reached out and took his fisted hand, “ That Treize, Is he the one who whipped you?”
He nodded.
“Son of a bitch. I knew I should have shot him.” She murmured.
Her remark was not lost on Duo.
He looked at her, with a stunned look. “You talked to him?”
Hilde looked at him, “ Yeah, tell me more. Why did he whip you?”
“I escaped from him but he caught me.” He said ,softly. “I am his property.”
“ Not here you aren’t and besides no person is property. When he was here, he was looking for something.”
Duo nodd“Yea“Yeah, but he won’t find it.”
“I won’t ask, in case he ever catches me alone. I won’t know.”
He smiled at her, “Yeah, You’re all ready in more trouble than you need.” He shivered slightly.
She waved her hand , “You don’t worry about me. You need to get back under those covers and get back to sleep. needneed to get you back to your full strength.”
She said as she winked at him, “ Cuz when you’re better, I’m putting you to work for your keep.”
He grinned as she pulled the covers up and took the cup. “Ok, I can go for that.”
“Good night, Duo. I’ll leave the door open a bit , if you need anything , just call. “There will be clothes in here for you In the morning.”
He nodded and closed his eyes.
She turned and went out the door carrying the pot and cups with her. Hilde put the things by the sink and restoked the fireplace, shivering in the cool air. After it was blazing good she turned to the small couch, looking at it. Instead of laying on it, she walked to the window. She pulled the curtain back and a peered into the dark rainy night. She knew Treize Kushrenada was out there somewhere , just waiting to pounce. She shook her head with determination. It wasn’t going to happen. He would not get the best of her. She looked thoughtfully out at the rain. Perhaps Heero would….. No he already had a dislike for the young man in her bed. Maybe she would have to ask him why.
There was no way that bastard was getting Duo back. She didn’t know what she was going to do but she knew he wouldn’t win. Men like him took what they wanted and thought they could get away with it. But it wasn’t going to happen. He would not get his way this time. Not if she could help it. She closed the curtain and walked to the couch. She sighed as she sat down on the couch. As she settled down on it and pulled a blanket up over her she heard Duo call to her.
“Miss Hilde?”
She climbed off the couch and grasping the blanket walked to the door.
“Yes?” She could see him sitting up in the semidarkness.
“Well, um, this bed is big enough for both of us if you would like to share it with me.” He held up his hands, “I promise to keep my hands to my self, I mean, why can’t we both be comfortable. Do you trust me?”
“Do I have a reason not to?”
“Well, I am an outlaw………”
She smiled, “Not by choice.”
He smiled as she climbed into the bed with him. As she settled in, he leaned over and asked, “You mind if we share warmth?”
“No.” Was her reply, as he spooned up next to her, his arm draping over her waist and over the blanket she had around her.
Hilde lay quiet for a long time listening to his soft breathing as he drifted back to sleep. She soon let the weariness of the day take her to sleep too. She had a feeling this would be the first of many nights they would share this bed, even if only in a platonic way.

The next morning dawned dark and stormy. Hilde’s eyes opened as a loud rumble of thunder rattle d the windows and caused Mutt to whine. She moved a bit and felt Duo’s embrace tighten around her. She smiled , wondered what he was thinking. She lifted his arm from her and started to slide out of the bed.
He murmured softly as she moved away from him. She reached over and gently ted hed his forehead, checking to see if he was feverish. She sighed, maybe a slight one she thought as she moved out of the bed. She watched as he reached for her then relax back into slumber. She wrapped the blanket around her and left t he room. It was chilly as she made her way to the kitchen, checking the stove and throwing some tinder on the small burning flame bringing it back to life. Then she placed several large logs inside and closed the door. Soon it was hot and she started to cook some eggs. She laid a few pieces of home made bread on the flat part of the stove turning them as they toasted. The aroma of food filled the house. She quickly pulled the pan from the heat and went to her small bureau for some jeans and a flannel shirt. She carried it into the bed room and shook Duo’s uninjured shoulder.
He blinked and looked up at her, as she hand grasped hers.
“Breakfast is ready if you want some. Here are some clothes, I hope they fit well. It’s a little chilly today. “
Duo sat up and looked at the clothes. His shoulder and side ached but he wouldn’t ask for her help. He nodded and waited for her to leave the room, not really knowing why. She had seen him naked twice at least. She had retreated giving him the privacy. Duo watched her as she moved from the room. What did he get her in to? Treize would kill her with out a second thought. He shook his head as he struggled into his shirt. He couldn’t let that happen. She was special. She made him feel something he had felt in years. Something warm, good and even achy at times. He wasn’t going to lose this feeling or her till he figured it out. To hell with Treize, maybe she was right. Could he get away from Treize with her help? He thought of the bag he had stolen and hid in the woods. He snorted knowing it would never be found unless he wanted to find it. Treize would not get it back. That was his future and maybe hers too.
