Jaded 3 - Turbulence

2 years, 5 months and 27 days A.P.

ring…ring…

“I got it!” Trunks yelled.

Trunks crossed his arms, a little annoyed when his little sister beat him to the phone. She had a very serious expression on her face, which meant it wasn’t someone she knew on the line. “Vegeta? You mean my dad, The Prince? I’ll go get him for you,” she articulated carefully.

Bra set the receiver down on the counter top. She stuck her tongue out at her brother. “It’s for Dad,” she informed him before taking off on her little legs to find their father.

Trunks uncrossed his arms as he moved back to complete his homework. He had hoped it was Goten. His younger friend had said he would call sometime tonight.

He looked up as his father entered the room and picked up the receiver, “Yes?”
Trunks could hear the other person’s voice over the line, even though he could not make out the words being said. “How the hell did you get this number?” the prince snapped.

“I told you, I was done…” a very excited voice on the other end, “I don’t care how much they are willing to offer. You’re going to have to find someone else…” Vegeta looked up and saw him watching. “Don’t call here again,” his father said. The voice continued to blabber something as the receiver was set back into its cradle. His dad grimaced as he programmed the phone to block the number.

“What subject are you working on boy?” Vegeta asked, hoping to distract his oldest from asking questions.

Trunks perked up. He loved it when his dad was willing to talk about his schooling. Not to mention he learned a whole lot more if it was a subject his dad was interested in also. “Finances.”

Vegeta grunted, having little interest in what the school system thought was appropriate for a child of Trunks’ rearing and financial status.

“Goten was going to help me. I just can’t think at such a minimal level. It’s just too socially foreign,” Trunks groaned before placing his head down in his book.

“What do you mean?” Vegeta asked.

“Well, they’ve given each student a minimum wage job, and we have to work out how to afford a vehicle and a place to rent with our earnings. Right now, I can’t afford to eat or buy a bed. I just can’t wrap my mind around how someone could do with so little.”

“Why would you need a vehicle? You can fly,” Vegeta pointed out.

“See, I can’t tell the teacher that. I have to think like a human,” Trunks lamented.

Vegeta frowned, and was about to comment on the futility of the exercise this lesson was when the phone rang again. He picked up the receiver and scowled as he could recognize the person on the other end by their breathing, “I told you not to call here.”

The person on the other end said something quickly that had Trunks’s dad’s ki spike. “You’ve crossed the line. Expect to see me in two hours. Make out your will,” his father said before setting the receiver down again, and programming the phone to block this number also.

Vegeta turned to leave the room. “Where are you going dad?” Trunks asked. He didn’t like the aura that had built around his father so fast. Nothing got to his dad like that except…

“Someone has threatened my kin. They have no idea whom they are dealing with,” Vegeta said before he exited, “Don’t let your sister answer the phone!”

Trunks’s eyes grew wide. Someone was going to…

The teenager got up from the table and raced to the phone. His fingers shook as he dialed. “Hello?” Trunks heard Goten’s voice on the other end.

“Goten…Get Gohan,” Trunks said excitedly.

“Trunks, your homework can’t be that bad. I’ll come over,” his friend said.

“No, Goten, it’s not my homework,” Trunks gestured wildly with his free hand in frustration, “It’s my dad.”

Goten had felt Vegeta’s ki spike, but had thought nothing of the frequent occurrence. Trunks’s concern in the matter made him anxious. “GOHAN!” he covered the receiver with his hand as he yelled for his older brother.

“I’m on it,” his brother’s unruffled voice came from behind him. He turned to see Gohan shrugging a jacket on. The eldest demi took his glasses off and set them on the table. “Tell Trunks to hang in there. You should go over there…if you think it will help.”

Goten nodded as his brother opened the door and stepped out. “Gohan is going. I am coming over.”

Trunks leaned against the wall in relief, “Okay.”

“See you in fifteen,” Goten said before he hung up the phone.

Trunks hung up his end. He returned to his books and sat down…on something crunchy and gooey. He heard his sister giggle as he stood up to see what he had sat on. Raw eggs were now crushed on the seat of the chair. “BRA!” he sighed in disgust at the time he was going to waste cleaning up the mess as he heard his sister’s bare feet patter down the hallway at high speeds.

Goku woke from fevered dreams. He must have woken with some small movement, because Vinh woke with him. The man’s slim hand hesitantly touched his back as Goku sat up, and then he felt the smaller man sit up also. “What’s wrong?” Vinh asked him.

Goku shook his head and closed his eyes to the starlit room. He groaned in frustration, and rubbed his hands along his still clothed thighs, but this only brought the dream images back. His nostrils flared, searching for scents his body thought should be there, but weren’t.

A burst of ki from half way across the world was like a splash of cold water to his psyche, and he was standing without even realizing he had moved. The longer it lasted, the more others were able to detect it. He heard the man behind him suck in a shocked breath. Tiny sounds around the complex told him other students were waking because of the disturbance. He reached for the shirt he had been wearing the day before and pulled it on before he opened the door to the walkway outside.

Many of those awoken were gathered in small groups, discussing the imbalance quietly amongst themselves. Newer students stood in front of the Master’s quarters, hoping he could tell them what it was they were sensing.

The Master was bombarded with questions as soon as he walked out of his door. “Is it an earthquake, Master? Will it cause a tsunami?” Goku’s stomach churned at their innocent assumption that only something natural could be so catastrophic.

Without drawing attention to him, the Master gave him a small nod, and Goku left through the tangled jungle that surrounded the complex of the forge. When he felt his eldest son’s ki increase he took flight before he had intended.

Wherever Vegeta was headed, he was in a rush…and a rage. Gohan knew he would not be able to catch up at this rate. He was only this close because he had been able to cut across the prince’s path. Suddenly the prince’s speed was check, and then halted altogether. Gohan estimated he was seconds behind the other.

Which was certainly long enough for Vegeta to wreak havoc.

Charles Newham had worked with Vegeta for six months, over two years ago. He acted as more of a go-between potential employers and the volatile man. Of course, nothing in that short period of time had happened to make him take the sable haired man’s threat to heart. Vegeta was always grumpy…nothing to be alarmed about.

That was, until less than two hours the other had warned of, and his front door and half the wall with it came crashing in. Charles sat in his home office with his mouth gaping. The vice-like hand in his hair pulling him up to face his death told him he should have taken the threat seriously. He pissed his pants.

He squealed as he was thrown back when something collided hard with his would-be killer, and another wall in his house was taken out. He noticed it was actually two walls as he crawled under his desk, touching his head to the floor and tucking his arms over it, covering his ears. He slammed his head up against the desk drawer when water from broken pipes in his hallway bathroom flooded the area he was kneeling in.

“Get off of me brat!” Charles heard Vegeta’s gruff voice shout as he rubbed the back of his abused head.

“No, you can’t go around killing people!” an unfamiliar young voice insisted. Charles hoped who ever it belonged to was winning the struggle that was taking out more of his home’s walls.

“Dad!” the mystery voice suddenly shouted. Then there was eerie silence.

A few moments later a tall young man came walking through the rubble of what used to be his bathroom into his office. Charles squealed again as this man grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him to his feet. “What ever you did to piss him off, I would strongly suggest you don’t do it again.”

Mr. Newham nodded his head vigorously. “Yes…I was only doing as I was told. I’m just the messenger. But they are on their own now. Nothing is worth this.” The hold on his clothing was loosed, and he stood on his own. By the time he had caught his balance, he was alone in his home once again.

He whined as he surveyed the damage, and wondered if insurance would cover the costs.

Vegeta threw elbows at the body behind him. “Get off of me you bas…” his rant was cut short as they were plunged into a deep body of water.

Long blond hair floated around him as he continued to struggle. He rammed his head back as he realized he didn’t have much air left, and their bodies were being drawn down fast by their combined muscle mass.

The arms trapping him loosened by hairs breadth and he used the moment to ascend. The ki shock pushed his captor back enough for him to gain the freedom needed to head for the surface.

Goku shook his head from the shock of having Vegeta’s hard skull crash into his face. He noticed a red stream bleeding into the water, and reached up to touch his nose, but the water washed away any evidence of exactly where the blood was coming from. He started to swim towards the surface, just as the first shark came at him, biting down on his outstretched arm.

Vegeta broke the barrier and floated above the water’s plane as he simultaneously took a huge lungful of air and shot dozens of ki blasts into the dark depths below him.

Goku had just shaken the third shark off when he the water’s depths started becoming brighter; he looked up in time to dodge one of many ki blasts coming down. As he dodged another, a shark bit down on his leg. He punched the animal in the eye and shook his leg loose.

When no return volley was sent in Vegeta’s direction he took the time to slough off his ruined jacket. He took a deep breath before plunging back into the salty water.

He passed a sluggishly rising decapitated shark carcass on his way down. He didn’t understand why he couldn’t see the third class’s ki lit form yet. In his focus he didn’t notice the predator behind him until it had already tried to take a chunk out of his thick hide. Vegeta practically dislocated his own shoulder in order to twist a hand behind him and get a ki blast off at the beast’s head.

He pried the severed jaws from around his middle and then finally saw the third class through the now ruddy water. The other had dropped his transformation, and the prince assumed it must be for some reason other than the damage caused by the pesky animals.

Vegeta decked one that foolishly came at him straight on. The fuckers were swarming, the cannibalistic feeding ground he and Kakarott were creating drawing more and more.
He doubled up and vainly covered his ears before he could release a ki flash into the water as a high-pitched vibration ran through the liquid atmosphere. He felt something slam into his stomach and his body was propelled swiftly upwards as multiple sonar continued to disable him.

The prince felt his back break the surface and instinctually used his ki to keep from flopping back down into the mire below. He opened his eyes in order to see which way was up, the bothersome noise disrupting his natural sense of direction. The further up he flew, the more bearable the sound became. He prepared to send an incinerating ki blast into the water below when a hand wrapped around his wrist. “Let go of me, Kakarott!”

“We were too close to Kame house. We are clear now,” Goku insisted.

“FINE!” Vegeta threw a punch at the other. Two fights interrupted! Someone was going to pay, and there was a more than suitable body right next to him. He smirked as the stupid third class doubled over, not having anticipated the strike to the gut. He started a roundhouse kick at the other’s vulnerable head, but it was blocked before it connected.

Goku chastised himself for letting Vegeta get in the first blow, but he was quick to block the next strike, and even quicker to focus on his energy beacon he had planted by the door of the building last time he had been there.

The open-air surroundings were suddenly replaced by oppressive darkness. Vegeta knew where they were by smell alone. “How the fuck did you do that?” there should have been no one here to enable Kakarott to IT into the room.

Goku slammed Vegeta’s back into hardwood flooring. “Drop it,” he hissed warningly at the other. He didn’t want the situation to escalate any more than it already had. If Vegeta didn’t back down, he was going to put him through the floor.

Vegeta growled before he resentfully released his transformation. He squinted as flickering light suddenly lit the room.

Goku ascended at the same time he used ki to spark the candles and torches set up for black outs. The one back-up generator was used to power the regeneration tank in case of emergencies, and the main solar generator had not been started since the last time they had been here.

Goku closed his eyes to the light as he inhaled deeply. This place was filled with the scent his body had craved earlier. “What was this all about Vegeta?” Goku asked as he leaned away from the other.

“The man had the audacity to threaten my daughter,” Vegeta said feeling fully justified in his actions.

Goku opened his eyes to gauge the prone one’s response. From what he could discern, there was no hidden agenda behind Vegeta’s statement. “Why?”

Vegeta made to sit up and Goku pressed a hand to his chest, making him stay down. Vegeta sneered at the hand, “It’s not any of your business.”

“It becomes my business when Gohan has to baby-sit you,” Goku countered. He didn’t appreciate having been drawn away from his haven before he’d had a chance to mentally prepare himself for a confrontation with Vegeta.

“Your brat should have stayed out of it,” Vegeta smirked, “Though had I known this was all it was going to take to get your attention, I would have done it sooner,” he purred. He received low-level ki wave to his chest for his insolence and groaned.

Goku took his hand away from Vegeta and rubbed it on his drying pants. He didn’t want this situation to turn into something Vegeta would want to repeat. He stood up and made his way to the door panel and punched in his personal code, “As soon as we are dried out, we are leaving.”

Vegeta grinned. If Kakarott really wanted to leave all that badly, he would only have to flare his ki. The prince’s eyes narrowed as he thought about many possibilities as to why Kakarott would wish to stall. He was forced to cover his eyes as the third class finally opened the door.

Goku took a deep breath of the air that flooded into the room. Warm grass, evergreen and broad leaf trees, dirt…it helped. If Vegeta had really pressed before he had gotten the door open, he might not have left as soon as he had wished.

“Again, I’ll ask, why did that man threaten your daughter?” Goku said before he turned from the sunlight.

“This building wasn’t cheap,” Vegeta snorted and stood.

Goku growled, “And?” he wasn’t going to let Vegeta get away with his usually cryptic remarks.

“I did a few odd jobs to obtain the collateral to build it,” Vegeta shrugged his shoulders, “Someone thought it was worth the threat to my family for me to start working again.”

Goku cocked his head sideways. Vegeta working just didn’t compute. His head snapped back up when a thought hit him, “What kind of jobs?”

“That seems to fall into the category of ‘what we do outside the room’,” Vegeta grinned, “I don’t have to answer you.”

Three steps and Goku had hold of the prince by his hair. It no longer sickened him when Vegeta molded against him immediately. He did find it absolutely irritating when he desired a totally different reaction though. “Did you kill people?” the way Vegeta licked his lips and then looked to the side was a dead giveaway whatever the elite was about to answer it was an absolute lie.

“I assassinated thousands. Does that piss you off?” the hopefulness in the prince’s voice was disgusting.

Goku threw Vegeta to the floor. He placed a heavy knee in the middle of Vegeta’s chest. “Liar. What have you been doing?”

“I haven’t been doing anything, since you made your promise,” Vegeta said, looking straight at him, even though he was evading the real question.

Goku pressed his weight down, limiting Vegeta’s ability to draw in air. “What did you do in order to pay for this building?” He kept the smile from his face as the other tried to budge his knee with his hands. Vegeta never did like having his breathing restricted.

Vegeta growled before dropping his hands and his head back to the floor. “Mining.” It was so humiliating.

“Mining?” Goku leaned back. That certainly wasn’t something he would have thought Vegeta would be interested in, or profitable enough.

Vegeta shrugged. “Dangerous jobs that took finesse and precision. Lots of companies are willing to pay for someone stupid enough to try them. After gaining a reputation for being a lucky son of a bitch, I was able to dictate the salary. Charles did my negotiations. I blasted mountains instead of people. You happy? This room wasn’t paid for with blood money.”

Goku was slightly relieved. He really hadn’t known what he would have done if he had found out this refuge was morally compromised…more than it already was. He smiled before bouncing his weight just enough to bruise some of Vegeta’s ribs. “Satisfied enough.” He lifted his leg away and replaced it with his hand, pressing down where he the bruise would be forming. He reluctantly removed his hand after Vegeta hissed. “You get to keep that. No senzu, no regeneration tank. It’s time to go,” Goku stated as he got up.

Vegeta ignored Goku’s outstretched hand as he got up. The candles were extinguished as they left through the entry. Goku pulled the door shut and then set his code. He dropped his transformation at the same time he reached for Vegeta’s shoulder.

Vegeta tensed, but said nothing as he noticed Goku was bringing two of his fingers to his head.

They appeared in Capsule Corporation’s family kitchen. Several pairs of eyes focused on them at once.

“DADDY!!!!” Bra yelled, bouncing from her chair into her father’s arms. Vegeta duly caught her and winced.

“Hi Princess. We need to have a talk about you not talking to strangers,” Vegeta said as he turned to the refrigerator. He opened of the freezer portion and pulled out three capsules of ice cream.

Goku didn’t notice. He and Goten were rooted to their spots. Both sets of eyes were starting to water. ‘Stupid, stupid, stupid…’ Goku berated himself. He should have read the kis surrounding Trunks better.

Goten slowly stood. “No…Don’t go,” he whispered as his father brought two fingers up to his forehead, and was gone.

~o0o~

“OUT!”

Goku stopped in his tracks. He looked up at the Master, confusion marring his features.

“Out. You’re in as bad a shape as the day you first got here.”

Goku looked down and retraced his footsteps backwards, leaving as ordered. He turned when he caught sight of the wooden wall out of his peripheral vision, and headed back into the jungle.

Moments later he heard soft footsteps following him. He continued until he got to the object that had led him here in the first place. A large pillar made of metals in their raw forms stood alone in a clearing, its shadow stretching to the west in the early morning sun. Imbedded throughout it were metals that were not natural to Earth, each piece no bigger than the size of his fist.

Goku sat down on one of the boulders circled around the pillar. He stayed silent as the elderly man came and sat two boulders away from him. “It has taken a long time for you to gain your balance. I am disappointed you let it go so easily.”

Goku drew in a shuddering breath as he thought about his sons, “They shouldn’t have to see me like this,” Goku whispered.

“Like this? No, but you were fine when you left,” Nabuo pointed out.

Goku nodded.

“What happened between the time you left and the time you saw them?” it was a question designed to get the young man to think, and not something he really needed to hear an answer on. Nabuo knew what ever ‘it’ was, was also the thing that kept the young man from committing completely to the forge. “There is no balance in this. You either have to leave it behind…or let it drag you in completely.”

Goku dropped his head as he thought about the words spoken to him. He was sayian; he couldn’t leave that part of himself behind. He grunted in derision, he had been trying to do so for decades. Anger welled up in him as he thought about how close he had been to succeeding, until Vegeta had raped his mind.

There were only two sayians left, Vegeta and himself. The selfish bastard’s refusal to let their kind go extinct…was trying to keep a hold of something that was eventually going to die out worth it?

“Son of Bardock…I am not saying you have to be pure. I am not pure, but I am at peace with who I am.” That advice got Goku’s attention, and he looked up quickly at the man sitting with him.

Nabuo smiled and stood, “Get settled as well as you can. I hope to see you at sundown.”

Goku watched the old man make his way back as he let his thoughts wander. When the jungle swallowed any traces of the man, he turned his attention back to the pillar.

It was a pleasant surprise to see the twins standing there, identical smiles on their faces.

“You do know it should be impossible for you to be able to sneak up on me, don’t you?” Vinh shrugged his indifference to what he should or should not be able to do. Trung just turned and led the direction into the jungle towards the ‘recovery’ cabin.
