March: Of Fishes, Flowers, and Family

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel so stupid leaving this here over the weekend, even if it wasn\'t that eventful. I was just so excited about Wufei that it slipped my mind. He hasn\'t found out yet, thank goodness. But I\'m expecting an irate phone call any day now. I just hope he isn\'t too mad.

I do have a defense against his rant. I made sure of that. One of the chief signs of a good businessman is how prepared he is. The school was already considering placing him here. They wanted to put one of their top students here to make a good impression. A good impression means more placements. More placements means more students, etc. It\'s just how things work. He\'s one of the top of his class, therefore, he was in the running. I just had to make the suggestion and he was in. So I get to stroke his ego while I defend my aga against the tirade. He needs his ego stroked sometimes. He\'s way too hard on himself, therefore he works harder to become the best. Then he becomes the best and has to work even harder to maintain his advantage. It\'s really a vicious cycle. But we talked him into coming out with us this weekend.

Everyone got together for dinner on Saturday. Nothing special, just everyone meeting at a restaurant to catch up and hang out, and when I say everyone, I mean everyone. The four of us were there, plus Trowa, Heero, Dorothy, and Cathy. An eight-person dinner party is always just the right size. Not so big that you can\'t talk to everyone, but big enough that there\'s never a lack of conversation. Of course with Duo around there\'s never a lapse in conversation.

Relena, who organized the outing, claimed that it was just a friendly little get together, but she confided in me it was to get \'Fei out of the house. Finals are coming up, which means we\'ll be lucky if he answers his phone. This was like a last ditch effort to see him before he crawls into his books.

So, our previously little group’s grown, but I don’t think anyone minded. It was really strange for significant others to be invited, but then again, most of us don’t date really seriously. Definately never to the level where you’d think of inviting them along to gatherings, but times, as they say, are changing and you can either change with them or fall behind. Personally, I’m embracing this with open arms, especially since the change is coming in a nice Trowa-shaped package.

I remember reading this quote back in college, when Duo was on his disutopian literature kick. He had it posted on his door along with few more by the same author about excuses, but this one stuck with me. “To us, the moment 8:17 A.M. means something - something very important, if it happens to be the starting time of our daily train. To our ancestors, such an odd eccentric instant was without significance - did not even exist. In inventing the locomotive, Watt and Stevenson were part inventors of time.” [1] He tried to use it as an excuse to turn in a paper late once, and it worked. Somehow using a quotation on a philosophy teacher to support your argument works. Wish it worked in the business department too. But I always thought that it was a reflection as to how time has changed, by looking at something so insignificant as clocks and time tables con conveying the idea that out ancestors didn’t need them. I don’t really know if this applies to the previous conversation, but it kind of just struck me.

There was another one on the door that I just remembered. “After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”[2] I liked that one too, but for very different reasons. Now I have the sudden urge to play my violin, because I don’t think I can get out everything I want to say with words. Besides, it’s good to keep in practice.

1. Aldous Huxley people. I found this quote in high school and I always liked it. I had to search the web again to find it, but it’s worth it, especially since I found a whole bunch of good quotes with it. I love Huxley. He’s a smartass.

2. Huxley again. Isn’t this man just full of them?
