Chapter 5 The Breaking of Kai

The first thing Kai noticed when he opened his eyes was the throbbing pain in his leg muscles. As he struggled to remember the earlier events, he brought his hands up to his face to rub out the lethargy. It was then that he saw the chains around his wrists, and his legs too. There was enough slack for him to move his hands to the front of his body, but not much more.

Kai looked around at his surroundings. He was chained to the stone wall of a bare room. There was a large wooden door at the opposite end of the room. It almost seemed at if he was in a dungeon in the medevial times. A bowl-like crater was in the ground in front of him. Kai recognised it as a Beyblade dish. Somehow, this place was vaguely familiar. But Kai's attention was quickly brought to the door, as it creaked open. A famr fir figure stepped in.

"Kai... how long has it been?"

"Not long enough, Boris," Kai spat. "I should have known it was you. What does Voltaire want this time?"

"You know what your grandfather wants... for you to be his grandson."

"And help fufill his twisted plans of taking over the world? Never."

"But k ofk of the power Black Dranzer can give you..."

"You've tried this before, and I won't fall for it again. Dranzer has proven its abloty to defeat Black Dranzer."

"But Dranzer is so much more... demanding."

"What do you mean?"

"Black Dranzer is devoid of passion and emotion. All it requires is your strength. But as a bird of fire, Dranzer requires much more... Dranzer demands your passion in order to unlock its fullest power."

"But I can give Dranzer the passion it needs!"

"Really? Or have you forgotten what just happened this afternoon?"

"I... Wait, how do you know about this afternoon?"

Boris merely smiled. "Accept the power of Black Dranzer, Kai. You cannot escape from your fate."

"I will not betray my friends!"

"Who betrayed who in the first place?"

"Rei... no! I will never betray my friends... no matter how they treat me."

Boris walked up to Kai and grabbed his shirt roughly. He spoke in a deadly whisper. "Don't force me to do it the hard way."

"I am a Bladebreaker, and I will remain loyal to them."

"In that case I have no other choice." Boris took out a leather whip. "I iviniving you one last chance."

"What do I have to say to get it into your thick skull that I will never ever help Voltaire?"

Boris lashed the whip at Kai, hitting his sleeveless left arm. A red mark immediately appeared where the whip had hit. "There's plenty more where that came from."

"Even if you kill me, I will never join BioVolt."

Boris started whipping Kai like a crazed beast. No part of Kai was spared: his arms, chest legs and even face fell victim to Boris' frenzy. Kai took it all in silence. Finally exhausted, Boris stopped. Kai's body was covered in scars, many parts bleeding.

"It will do you no good to resist."

"I will die content knowing I have not betrayed my friends."

"I see you need to experience the power of darkness first... Come out, Dreamer."

A figure clad in a black ninja suit appeared from behind Boris. Kai recognised him as the one he had fought the night before.

"You... I've beaten you before. What more do you want?"

"To beat you," the figure said in a whisper.

"It will be a waste of time..."

"Kai, you claim that Dranzer will be victorious over evil," Boris said. "Prove it."

"Fine, I will battle you one last time. Let this be your last lesson."

Kai took his Dranzer out of his pocket.

"3. 2. 1," Boris counted. "Let it rip."

A silver and a blue blade flew towards the dish.

"Shatter attack!"

Dreamer headed straight for Dranzer.

"Not this again. Dranzer, avoid it!"

Dranzer emerged from the blade in a burst of fire. It swooped out of Dreamer's way and landed on the dish. Dreamer touched down soon after, and a black devil burst out of the blade.

"Dreamer, Shadow Strike!"

Dreamer disappeared into nothingness.

"Dranzer, increase fire intensity!"

Dranzer's feathers exploded into fire. lighting up the entire dish. Kai saw Dreamer beside Dranzer, almost ready to attack.

"Dranzer, Flame-"

Staring at the bright fire, Kai's thoughts wandered to Rei and he hesistated.

*Short-term flashback*

"...Dranzer demands your passion..."

*End flashback*

"Rei..."

The other blader saw Kai's hesistation and took the opportunity to attack.

"Dreamer, here's your chance!"

"Wha-?" Kai was snapped back into reality, but it was too late. He saw Dranzer flying straight back at him, straight at his head.

He could have sworn he heard one last mournful shriek from Dranzer before he blacked out.

*Quite some time later, in Rei's room*

Rei stood at the balcony, looking at the stars and the pale white cresent moon. But somehow, they seemed much less beautiful that they were two nights ago. Rei knew why. Kai was still missing. Without Kai, everything around him seemed hollow and lifeless. Every second that passed without Kai, Rei was wracked with guilt for letting Mariah kiss him. Mariah and apologised repeatedly and was genuinely remorseful for what she did, and was willing to personally explain to Kai that he was the only one Rei had ever loved. But Rei could not shake off his guilt. Even the moon seemed to be mocking him with its twisted smile.

He heard a faint knock at his door.

"Come in, the door's unlocked."

Xan opened the door softly and closed it gently. He walked up and stood beside Rei.

"What's on your mind?"

"Nothing much."

"It's Kai, isn't it?" Xan was aware that Rei and Kai loved each other.

"Yeah... he's been missing for more than a day now."

"We are all worried. Harsh and cold as he is, Kai is a really good leader. But the police have already been alerted, and they are organising a search for him, so you can trust that they will find Kai soon."

"I know, but I feel so... guilty."

"It wasn't your fault, Rei, it happened so quickly that nobody could have done anything."

"But still..."

"Come on, Rei, I bet a good night's rest will help ease your nerves."

"I guess you're right." Rei turned around and walked back to the bed, with Xan behind him. Rei laid down in a graceful, cat-like manner. Xan turned to leave, but Rei stopped him.

"Xan... can you sleep here tonight? I feel lonely... I guess I'm not used to being without Kai."

"Sure."

Xan laid down on the bed beside Rei. The two of them looked into each other's eyes. For a faint moment, Rei saw Kai in Xan's eyes. That fiery, blazing bassion... There was a vague semblance between Kai and Xan that Rei could not pin down. He jerked his head away.

"Rei?"

"Sorry, I... for a moment I thought you were Kai."

"You could pretend he was me, if it helps."

"Oh, Kai..." Rei broke down and started crying into Xan's chest. Xan was at a loss for words, and he did the only thing he could think of: he put his arms around Rei. Intoxicated by Rei's warmth, Xan started to remove Rei's shirt. Rei looked up at Xan, eyes questioning.

"I know you miss Kai. Let me help you."

Soothed by Xan's comforting words, Rei snuggled up against Xan's chest.

*Rei's POV*

As I snuggled up against Kai's chest, he took off my shirt slowly and carefully, almost as if I were a precious glass figure. All the while he caressed my back gently, and I felt a warm tingling sensation as his hand ran over my bare skin. My shirt was thrown into a pile on the floor, and soon my pants followed.

"Someone seems a little... overdressed right now," I said playfully.

"Tala?"

"What are you doing here?"

"Helping you escape," replied Tala, showing a key he had been holding in his hand. He proceeded to unlock Kai's chains.

"But why?"

"There's no time to explain now." Tala unlocked the last of Kai's shackles. "Come on, I'll lead you out of here."

Despite the piercing pains about his body, Kai managed to stand up and follow Tala. After leaving his jail, they entered a series of winding corridors. Tala seemed to know the way at the back of his hand. Before long, they were already at the exit.

"Hurry up, go!" Tala urged. He then walked back into the shadows.

Kai took one last, long look at the building before limping back towards the resort.

In the shadows, Tala watched Kai leave. A figure appeared behind him. Tala spun around. Watching Kai out of the corner of his eye, Tala asked, "Why do we let him go, sir? Isn't it better if we just kept hnd fnd forced him to join us?"

"We want to do moran gan get Kai to join us, Tala. We want to control him. It would take much more than that to break Kai."

"So what is the plan?"

"You don't need to know right now. Just follow orders."

*Rei POV... again*

I was jolted awake to the sound of the doorbell. Looking around, I saw that Xan was still fast asleep. Xan? Suddenly, memories of last night flooded my mind and the remorse I felt controlled my body. Kai was still missing and I had... slept with someone else...

*Flashback*

"Ok, I admit - Xan is cute. If you didn't exist, he would probably be my boyfriend."

*End flashback*

So it had happened... Kai went missing, and... I and Xan...

The doorbell rang again, but the others were still fast asleep. I would blame myself later. Right now, I would get rid of whoever had come at this hour. Throwing on some clothes, I walked down the stairs and opened the door. Walk I saw horrified me.

Kai was standing there, his entire body ced ied in injury.

"Kai! Wha-?"

Kai collapsed into my arms.
