Chapter 5
Duo stood by the door watching the cold fall rain come down. The house was warm and cozy. He shiv a as he watched her walk across the wet ground. She had insisted he stay inside as she did the chores she needed to do. She had gone into the little cabin her hired hand lived and had stoked his stove. Duo could see the smoke and smell the wood burning. He shook his head. She was just too kind. He then watched her trudge to the barn and take care of the animals in there, his included. Now she was coming back with an arm load of wood.
He pushed open the door for her as she slipped in be side him. He took a quick breath of the damp wet air. It smelled of fresh dirt and wet leaves. He pulled the door shut and turned to face her.
“so why did you start your hired hand’s stove?”
“Hm? Oh, they should be back today.”
“Oh. He doesn’t like me much.”
“I know. But it’s not his choice for you to be here.”
“I don’t want to cause you trouble.”
Hilde looked up at him from the fireplace. ”If Mister Yuy has a problem with what I do he knows he’s free to leave at any time. I don’t think his girlfriend would be very happy with him, or would her brother.”
“Brother?”
“Yeah. Sheriff Zechs Marquise.”
Duo stiffened and repeated, “Zechs Marquise?”
“Yeah, something wrong, Duo? You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.”
He shook his head and turned to the door. “ It’s nothing. He wouldn’t know I’m here would he?”
She shook her head. ”I don’t think so. I’m relatively out here alone.” She stood and walked over to him. “You want to tell me about it?”
“No, it’s not important.”
“You sure? He isn’t looking for you his he?”
“Well, not me in particular. Maybe Treize tho.” He paused, not sure if he should continue or not. “But he would use me or any one to get to him.”
“Sounds like you know Zechs pretty well.”
“Yeah, well, it’s not pleasant to talk about. He used to run with Treize. But when Treize tried to have him killed , their friendship dissolved in a big hurry.”
Hilde chuckled as she stood from the crackling fire. “Yeah, I can see where that would do it.” She turned to face him, “Come on let’s have some tea, before the chief and Heero get back.”
The rain was still falling when Heero Yuy and the chief stepped into the warm house.
Heero glared at Duo who was sitting in the large chair by the door. The chief looked over to the young man and smiled. “I see our young outlaw is up and moving around a bit.” He came closer to Duo and looked at his face. “ How do you feel? Miss Hilde taking good care of you?”
Duo blinked then blushed at the older man’s insinuation. Hilde looked over at the both of them but said nothing.
Heero’s glare shot from Duo to her.
Hilde stood and went to the pile of blankets she had out. “Here. I know it’s so little but I have been unable to barter in town since there has been out law trouble.”
He took the blankets and smiled. “It will be enough. Thank you. You must come to the village before snow.”
She nodded and said. “I shall.”
He moved toward the door. “I think winter will come early this year. The caterpillars have changed colors already. And the birds are gone.”
She nodded, “I know and I’m afraid it will be a long hard one too.”
He nodded and went out the door.
After the chief left , Heero glared at the two remaining people and retreated to his cabin.
Hilde snorted as the door closed.
Duo looked over to her. “Why didn’t you tell him we weren’t lovers?”
“It’s none of his business one way or the other.” She said as she looked at him, “If I wish to take you to my bed, I shall and he’ll have nothing to say about it.”
Duo’s mouth dropped open and he stuttered, gutturally.
Hilde smiled at his flustered state. “Don’t worry, Duo, we’ll keep it platonic, ok?” After a minute or two, he said softly, “I wouldn’t mind.”
Hilde walked around and stood in front of him, “I wouldn’t either, but we have other things to worry about than starting a relationship. First and foremost getting you totally away from Treize Kushrinada then, maybe………….” She said, leaving it open.
He grasped her hand, pulling her close to him. He looked down into her eyes and leaned forward. Hilde looked up and leaned up, their lips touching softly. After a few minutes, they broke the kiss and released each other.
“That’s my promise for later,” Duo said , to her as he let her go.
“Mine also.”
In the few minutes it took for them to kiss and make the promise they knew the relationship between them had changed forever.
Things progressed normally as the weather became increasingly colder and damper.
Hilde shivered she slipped her boots on and grabbed her heavy coat. she slipped on her gloves and picked up her rifle. The stores were getting bare and she need to find some game to shoot. Deer had been moving steadily through the woods , all she had to do was wait.
As she stepped into the cool , crisp air, it took her breath away for a moment. She looked down at the ground, noticing the foot prints in the new fallen snow. Duo had gone to barn, Maybe she would see what he was doing. As she got closer to the door she noticed another set of boots going inside. She frowned as she slipped in. It was quiet. All most too quiet. She raised the rifle and walked a little deeper into the barn. She could hear muffled voices as she moved into the animal area of the building.
“You had better not be touching her.” Came clear to her from across the floor. She stepped into a stall and saw Heero leaning on Duo’s back, His face pushed close to the other mans. He had Duo’s Arm twisted behind him and his face pushed up against the boards.
She cocked the rifle, the sound resounded through the room.
“MISTER YUY!” She said in a tone she had only used once before when she had killed a man. Her anger was bubbling up inside her.
Heero glanced at her and let Duo go.
He opened his mouth but Hilde was in front of him, her finger pointed at his chest. As she thumped his chest, forcing him back with each push and word.
“First of all, Mr. Yuy, you are not my father, or my brother or any other member of my family. You do not tell me who I can and can not take to my bed. If I want to take him to my bed , you will do nothing about it. I am after all an adult woman with her own needs and wants. I have not been a virgin for a very long time. I sure don’t need that protected. There were other men here before you came along. I did not sleep with all of them but I did a couple. Oh for God’s sake, don’t give me that look. I know what and who you are ,Mr. Yuy.”
Heero stepped back and stopped when she pushed him against the wall. He hadn’t seen her like this since that man had come and then disappeared. He never really knew what had happened , but he assumed she killed him. As she kept poking him in his chest , something snapped inside. A bad memory came back to haunt him, a memory he could not control. His face clouded over and he growled low in his throat. Hilde so intent on making her point to him did not see the danger signs, but Duo did.
He watched as Heero’s face changed and his arm cocked back to punch the woman in front of him. Duo moved quickly , grabbing Hilde and taking the punch Heero aimed for her in his face. Duo’s head snapped back with the force of the blow but he remained standing.
After the punch connected , Heero’s arm dropped and he came out of his trance.
“No.” Was all he said.
“She’s ok, Heero, I took the punch,” Duo explained. “hey, what’s the hell happened there?”
He glared at Duo and shoved him away. “Shut up.”
Hilde caught Duo as he stumbled back, and called out to Heero. Heero didn’t turn around, he just kept walking, wanting to get away from the situation as fast as he could. He shook his head as he hurried out, wondering what brought that out. He had kept those feelings down inside for so long, not even Relena could bring them out.
As he reached the door a young Indian boy ran into him, sending them both sprawling to the hard dirt floor.
“Miss Hilde,” The boy cried out softly.
Heero looked at the boy and recognized him as the chief’s youngest son.
“Dark Night, what is wrong?” He asked helping the boy to his feet.
“Miss Hilde, I must tell Miss Hilde!” he panted again.
Heero took his arm and pulled to the back of the barn where Duo and Hilde were still standing together in shock over Heero’s reaction.
As Heero and the boy moved into view, Hilde hurried to his side.
“Dark Night, What’s wrong? Why are you here?”
“White men attacking the village. Father and men are hunting. Help us. Mother sent me to find you.”
Hilde looked up at the two men standing beside her.
Heero was glaring. Duo only muttered one word. “Kushrinada.”
