Chapter 5
Hilde was starting to have second thoughts on this mission. She wondered what the y were up against if they needed elfin weapons. She eyed Quatre and then asked.
“What other weapons are we going to need on this quest?”
“You will pick them on your way. You have your own swords, the pixie dust, the elfin bow, and right now your own powers.”
She looked slightly disgusted with him. “ And?”
“You will need to find the Dragon of Lonely mountain and collect the last of the weapons from him. Of course you will see your wizard friend, WuFei when you have your audience with Queen Relena . He shall have something for you too.”
“What the hell are we getting into , Quatre? Tell me.”
“It’s something dark and it’s going take all the wits you have about you, as I told you before. You will meet allies and enemies. But beware some allies will be enemies.”
“Quatre.” Duo looked at him, “You are talking in riddles and it’s annoying me. You annoy me, but you annoy me more when you do that.”
Quatre laughed, bringing a smile to Hilde’s face.
“Honestly , Quatre.”
He looked at the both of them, ”Perhaps I should travel with you for a bit. There is some one I would like to see at that inn you are going to stop at.” His face got dreamy look as he thought of the inn.
Duo nudge Hilde , “Look at that face….. He’s thinking of a girl.”
Quatre blinked then blushed. “ I’m ……”
“Oh, it’s a boy?”
His eyes got wide, “NO! it’s just some one I haven’t seen in a long while. I should pay her a visit.”
“Hm…. If you say so.”
Hilde elbowed Duo, “Enough of the pixie torment. Let‘s get going , we have a long journey ahead of us.”
She quickly returned to the cave and packed their things, with Duo slipping in behind her to help. Soon they were ready and the caveokedoked as if none had dwelled in it at all. As Hilde swung the pack onto her back she wondered again, what they w rea really getting into.

Relena sighed as she flopped down on her bed. She so wished she could be going on the quest for her son. She knew dark magic was in play and she was a mere mortal. She couldn’t combat magic. Heero couldn’t either. She knew the dark was there with her. She could feel it in every step she took. It invaded the land, the air and the castle. Much of it emanated from her friend , Dorothy. She knew what Dorothy was. She was sure Dorothy was a spy for the man who took her and Heero’s son. She rolled over and sighed again. Sometimes she wished she could throw this crown off and run…..far away. Take Heero and their son and just disappear. But the responsibility was too ingrained in her and she could not do it. She closed her eyes and wished Heero to her room. He had not come to her in a long time and she wanted him. She missed him so. She honestly wished she could take him as her husband not just her consort. Perhaps when this was all over she could, no… she would. To hell with the bylaws… by the gods she was queen and she could change the laws if she so wished it. She did not think her popularity would not be reduced by this decision. Pardoning Duo and Hilde may cause her distress. The people only had heard the version she had toldder der the influence of magic. They didn’t know the truth, how she had called them to her room with the intention of killing them both. It was an evil intent placed in her head by the Dark Lord , himself and she couldn’t control herself. The dark lord had known something long ago and wanted the two of them dead. She smiled slightly , he had tried several times after that but had failed. But the damage had been done. Not only had she banished them she had put a price on their heads also. Many of her subjects hunted for them with the intention to kill. She had wanted to stop that but all her advisors had told her no, to let it go. Now , she was going to but this right… the Dark Lord had separated her from her friends and now her son. She wondered how long it would be before he got to Heero.
She rolled over , sighed , and was about the rise from the bed when there was a knock at her chamber door. She sat up and straightened her gown, to greet who ever it was.
“Come.”
The door opened and her personal guard , Middi, stepped into the room. Middi bowed and apologized.
“My Queen, Your Captain of the Guard is here to speak with you.”
Relena nodded, “Allow him in and you are dismissed for the evening.”
Middi nodded and stepped from the room, allowing Heero to enter. He stood quietly for a moment until the door closed behind him. Relena stepped hesitantly toward him. He then stepped toward her and pulled her into his arms, kissing her fervently.
“I am sorry, my queen, for not returning to you sooner. There have been reports of Dark magic activity and I had to investigate.”
She nodded, understanding but happy to be in his arms. “What news do you have, Heero?” She asked, hesitantly.
He shrugged as he released her. “ His dark minions are gathering to the north, and west. So far we have found no indication of them gathering in the east or south. But our spies have not returned from those regions as of yet. I fear for them.”
He turned to look at her. “What over Duo and Hilde?”
“They travel to us as we speak.” She replied, watching his face, as she spoke.
“Will they be able to stop this?”
“According to WuFei, Yes. They have been touched with the wild Magic. And it will explain the reason e de dark lord has wanted them dead. He knew this would happen”
“The wild magic? So it is not a myth after all.”
“No, Wu Fei reports that their powers grow with each breath they take. Duo can heal, Hilde can kill.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “I do believe that would be a hard burden to bare. To kill with a thought.”
He nodded as he listened. “ Yes, but it was given to Hilde, the fates must have known not to give it to Duo. He ’s gets too excited and would not think twice about the thought. Perhaps we should talk to Magician WuFei in the next few days, so we can be prepared for their arrival.”
She nodded. “Yes. I shall have Mistress Sally arrange it for us.”
“Your healer?”
“Yes, she consults with the magician almost everyday. Where do you think she gets some of the odd herbs she has?” She sighed, “I fear without our help ,they will not succeed in this quest we have put them on.”
“Why do you fret over these two so much. Relena? Didn’t they try to kill you?”
“ NO, I was under the influence of the dark lord and he made me attack them. I never told you the story. I was embarrassed being used in such away. I let the attempted assassination story go. They were my friends, Heero. And to be honest, I tried to kill Duo. He bares the scar from the blade Hilde gave me to protect myself . Hilde felt betrayed for that and was angry seeing the man she truly loved hurt and being attacked. She was only acting out of love. I would do the same for you. My guilt is deep and I must make amends. Pardoning is only the beginning, Heero. I must do more. I ruined their lives. Drove them from their home and made them exiles. And it was through no fault of their own. I was because I was weak and I fell prey to Lord Treize’s games.”
He nodded as he listened to her confession, understanding how she felt. Duo and her were good friends and Hilde came into the picture later. Relena had found a confidant in the dark haired girl and had loved her like a sister. She had no idea Duo and Hilde had become lovers until that night. After she had banished them she had smiled, knowing they would be able to take care of each other but the guilt still ate her up.
He stepped across the room and gathered once more into his arms. “Enough, Let’s relax and let the worries of the kingdom pass us by for a few minutes.”
“Yes, of course. And our son? Do you not fear for him?”
Heero smiled slightly, “I do a bit, but The Lord will not harm our son until he gets what he wants from us. He is the only bargain chip he has . Should he kill the boy… he knows there would be no negotiation at all.”
She nodded. “Yes, of course. I just wish I knew if he was alright.” She sighed, relaxing in Heero’s arms.
“Perhaps the magician Wu Fei can use his powers to find out.”
“Yes, of course! You are right, I shall ask Sally!”
He looked at her and changed the subject back to the two she had pardoned.
“They will be here in a few days and then we can get to business. The Dark Lord Treize will do nothing until then. He will gather his dark magic and wait… even though he knows the answer and then he will use our son against us.”
“Yes, I know.”

The daylight was there but muted. It filtered through the trees and didn’t make it to the ground below. The air was chilly, even though the winter was ebbing in this region. In others as sas still cold and snowy. Snow lingered , because the sun could not filter through the dark lord’s magic. Wu Fei shook his head. This man was unbelievable.. To get his way he would destroy a whole country and the people who lived there. All for power and land. He wondered what was on this land that Treize wanted so badly. Perhaps he should look into this matter more thoroughly. There was something here…….. But what? Could it because of the wild magic that Duo and Hilde had been exposed to? He shook his head. No, that wasn’t …. wild magic was random.. It picked the persons it wanted , not the other way around. It wasn’t just in this forest but all around. It was a free spirit in the sense of the word. It wasn’t alive but yet it knew where to go and who to adhere to. He wished he had known more about the wild magic but for years it had been thought of as a myth, not real…. And the only person he could ask was his mentor wa was his enemy now.
A noise brought his head up from his mediating. Sally was coming and she seemed in a hurry. He stood and quickly gazed around his little one room shack. She would reprimand him for the cluttered mess. He waved his hand and everything moved quickly to it’s proper place. The bed made itself and the broom quickly swept up any herbs he had spilled on the floor. He turned to the fire and placed a small caldron , filled with water on it. He turned to the table and picked a few tea leaves from it and tossed them into the beginning to boil water . He sniffed as he could smell the aroma of the leaves as they brewed into tea.
He closed his eyes and projected , picking up Sally as she moved through the maze he created to block intruders. Only she knew the right way into his little cabin. He wasn’t afraid of any one capturing her to make her tell where it was. He had very few enemies and she was the queen’s personal healer. She was quite protected from enemies. He frowned. The queen seldom lapsed on her protection of her son, so he knew dark magic had been used in that situation. He knew in his heart none of them were really safe. Only when Treize was defeated would things return to normal. Only then.
He heard the soft rap at the door and rose to get it , when Sally pushed it open and stumbled in.
She threw back her hood and shook her hair free.
“The Queen wishes to speak to you.”
He nodded as he poured the brewed tea into the cups he had set on the table. “Yes, I knew this was coming. She will want to know what she can do to help. “ He sighed, as he returned the caldron to the fire and handed a cup to Sally. “But I fear, only those two can do this .. There can be on help from us.. We can guide them but they have to do this. I fear this is going to be a difficult task, even for them.”
Sally said nothing as she sipped the tea WuFei had given to her. “Yes, I understand, but the queen still requests an audience with you. She wishes it soon.”
He nodded. “Of course, we shall go as soon as we finish our tea.”
He smiled slightly as he looked into his teacup. He liked who she always put her personal issues in the back of her mind when she had things to do for the queen. He knew of her feelings for him but he knew until this was over , neither on would be able to reciprocate them. He was sure she understood his feelings also, but was not the time to think of those things. They both had duties to attend to and love was not one of them.
