SoulSister: Well, you might or might not be close... but I'm not telling! You'll just have to wait for the next chapter.
Platinum Rei: Oh, I'm afraid this chapter won't quell any suspense... and you'll have to wait a long time again for the next chapter... sorry.
Rumi-chan: Are you still alive? If you are, I'll lend you Mrs. Chainsaw... Mr. Chainsaw can't do anything with Mrs. around.
Weird Guy: Don't worry, we all know that you're the weirdest of all. Well, it's nice to see another of my old reviewers return. Continue enjoying this story!

Kenny: What the hell are "Chronicles"?
Trueangel: Well, I was about to explain. This is a new technique I'm trying out. Chronicles are similar to normal chapters, except they are about the background story of this fanfic. Kinda like a side story, but intertwined with the fic itself. Chronicles are inserted irregularly between chapters. Oh, and Chronicles are all written from the POV of Dreamer, except where stated otherwise.
Kenny: This should be interesting... by the way, where's Xan?
Trueangel: He's preparing for his part in Chronicles... and this should give you a hint as to how much the Chronicles cover.
Kenny: So it's just you and me for the rest of this fic, huh... I can't wait.
Trueangel: Well, let's begin. Oh wait, before we do that, I'd like to point out that the disclaimer's been shoved up to just below the summary... so you still can't sue. Ok, we're set to go.

Chronicles 1 The Forbidden Love
My name is Legiany. However, most people call me Dreamer, because I tend to daydream a lot. Well, I don't dislike my nickname. I've grown used to it, especially since nobody calls me Legiany any more. In fact, I like the name "Dreamer" better than "Legiany". "Dreamer" sounds mystic and enigmatic, but "Legiany" sounds plain childish and dumb. But then again, if I had known that my name, "Dreamer", was to become synonymous with "traitor", I might have chosen to be called "Legiany" instead...
I am 658 years old, but by human standards, I look like a young 16 year old teen. An angel's lifespan is about 2500 years, so yes, I could be considered to be the equivalent of a human youth. But even then, many people say I look young for my age. They say I look childlike. It might be because of my large, wide eyes. It might be because of my style of dress; I like to go for pastel colors. I don't know. Devils, on the other hand, live for about 2800 years. But you can never tell the age of a devil by looking at them, because they look similar at all ages.
While angels are all humanoid, devils can come in a variety of forms. However, they mostly look canine-like. Devils walk on all fours, and that's about the only sweeping statement you can safely make about the physical appearance of devils. Each devil has his own unique features that become more accentuated as he grows. For example, if a devil was born with a particularly longer neck, by the time he was fully grown he could strangle you with it. Most of the time, the special features become so grossly exaggerated that the devil looks like, well, a devil. As such, I'd never thought I'd find one so handsome that I would fall in love with him. Until that day.
That day started ordinarily, like any other day. I woke up and realised that I was going to be late for work, like any other day. Seriously, I often wonder why I spend so much time daydreaming when I already dream so much at night. That night, I had dreamt about myself being a warrior, standing in the frontlines and vanquishing the devils. But I knew it was just an unattainable dream. I was too slow and too easily distracted.
I think I should give a little bit of info on the war between the angels and the devils. It started way before I was born, way before my parents were born, way before anyone living was born. The elders say it originated from the beginning of time, and defined the identity of the angels and devils. That's to say, and angel wasn't an angel if he didn't fight devils, and similarly for the devils. I'm not entirely convinced by them; why can't we just live in peace? Anyway, in recent years major battles have been sporadic. Instead, the angels adopt a defensive strategy, guarding our side of the portal that connects Heaven and Hell, while researchers come up with new ways of hopefully defeating the devils.
However, trade and commerce are vital to carry out this research, and more importantly to sustain our economy and society. This is also the case for the devils, though their instinctive feral nature compels them to rely more on brute force than research and science. Unfortunately, the inhabitants of other realms shun us because of the potential instability posed by war. Ironically, when it comes to trade the angels and devils only have each other to turn to. As such, it isn't surprising to see numerous devil merchants and traders on the streets of Heaven. Despite this being the case for the last tens of thousands of years, and despite the numerous checks these devils have to go through before entering Heaven, most angels still treat them with suspicion and fear. I see it as a small step towards achieving peace. Yes, I'm a big idealist, but it doesn't hurt to dream, does it?
Anyway, back to the story. After carrying out my daily morning routine, I grabbed a uniform out of my wardrobe. Normally, when you think of uniforms, you think of conformity and traditional conservativeness. Well, you'll be surprised when you see this uniform, if not shocked. The upper half of the uniform is made of a light pastel blue metal. Metal primarily for defence. But here's the twist. The neck of the uniform is a very low v-cut, reaching the middle of the chest. It's also sleeveless. The parts of the uniform that cover the shoulders are made of a translucent green glass-like material.
Then the shorts. And I mean short. It's made of a yellow metal. From the front, it looks like an M shape. The middle valley of the M shape protects the most precious part of the angel anatomy. Then, in front of the thighs the shorts arch upwards, kind of like Superman's briefs. Well, at least he wears pants inside. We don't. But as the shorts reach the other side of the leg, they curve downwards, ending at the knee. As a result, exposing *a lot* of skin. And, to top it all off, the uniform includes brown leather boots and studded gloves. At first glance, you'll probably wonder whetheras aas a prostitute or a guard. The people who designed the uniform say this is for "minimalisation" and 'maneuverability'. I say that whoever's in charge is just one horny freak who can't get enough of our flesh.
Maybe I should talk about my work. I am a security guard for Heaven Research & Technologies (HEART). HEART is a government-funded company that specialises in developing weapons and technologies for use in the war. As such, it is a highly sensitive area, and many security guards are on patrol 24/7. I was recently assigned to guard a special piece of technology that was recently developed. I don't know any facts about it, except that it's called 'Crystallis', and it's still a primitive prototype. But there are plenty of rumors. Some say it's a powerful weapon that will win the war for the angels. Others believe that it's just a scam to keep the company afloat; recent events and rumors have caused the company to fall out of the government's favour. Anyway, it's not my business to find out. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. The access code is broken up among the three security guards who guard Crystallis in shifts. The only person who knows the full access code is the scientist working on Crystallis: my longtime friend Ucharice. But he would never tell me the code, and I don't blame him for it.
Argh. I don't seem to be able to get past a few paragraphs without going off on a separate tangent, can I? That might be one of the reasons why I'm called Dreamer... Anyway, I quickly threw on my uniform, grabbed a sandwich, and opened the windows. It seemed like a good day for flying... Flapping my wings, I flew out of the window. I hovered in mid-air as I closed my windows, then zoomed off in the direction of HEART, trying to eat my breakfast at same time.
My prediction about the sky being good for flying was totally off. On many occasions I had to swerve to avoid being hit. Many of them I had narrowly avoided. But soon my luck ran out. I was a few metres away from HEART when I saw a blue streak slam onto my wings just before I felt myself falling, plummeting to the ground. Man, that person must have been speeding like shit, I thought to myself as I fell...
I jerked myself awake. This was no time to be thinking of trivial things like this, I had to stabilize myself! As the ground got closer and closer at an alarming rate, to tried to spread my wings to slow my descent. Instantly I felt a piercing pain shoot through them. Turning back, I saw that both of them were soaked in blood. Feathers were ripped away in so many places that even if I somehow managed to open them while enduring all the pain, they still wouldn't help much. This was it then... so suddenly... so unexpectedly... so much for being a warrior...
Then, I saw the blue streak dart back under me to prevent me from falling. As our speeds became the same, I could see who it was. A devil. And a cute one too; it looked like a small puppy with blue fur. I smiled. The devil smiled back. Despite the situation I was in, despite those canines exposed in a vampiric fashion, I still could help but feel a warm fuzzy feeling...
The devil landed on a soft grass patch, and I rolled off him. Quickly, I stood up, and dusting myself, I went over to thank him. But before I could say anything, he spoke first.
"Are you ok?" he said in a strong, deep voice.
I looked into his crimson eyes thate fie filled with true concern. His long, magnificent tail that ended in a scythe swished in the air as he pawed at the grass subconsciously. Every part of this beast was so enchanting, every action so distracting...
"Hello? Are you ok?"
"Umm, yeah."
"Are you sure? Those wings look like they could use some help."
"Honestly, I-" I looked at my watch. "Shit! I'm gonna be late."
"You work at HEART, right?"
"Yeah. How did you tell?"
"Your uniform is rather unique. Anyway, I'm a good friend of your boss. I'm sure he wouldn't mind, otherwise I'll personally make sure he doesn't do anything to you."
"Well..."
"Come on, or you'll bleed to death with those wings."
"Ok."
"I'll take you to see a doctor," he said, gesturing for me to ride him.
I accepted his offer, and with a few strong flaps, we were in the air again, albeit in a much more comfortable position. After a period of silence, the devil spoke again.
"What's your name?"
"I'm Dreamer."
"I'm Volten. Nice to meet you."
A slight pause.
"My real name's Legiany. But you can just call me Dreamer."
"If you say so."
Another pause.
"Your eyes are beautiful."
"Really?" Nobody had ever complimented my eyes before. They were an odd shade of pale lavender. I had once hated them more than anything else. But now...
"Yeah. They make you unique."
I blushed. "Thanks."
The rest of the journey passed in a comfortable silence.
=At the doctor's=
I walked out of the doctor's office with a bloodstained bandage around my broken wings. Volten was standing outside. The moment he saw me, he walked over.
"How are your wings?"
"Just broken. They'll be fine. I won't be able to fly for a few months though."
"I'm really sorry about..."
"It's nothing. It's just an accident."
"I'm glad you're not angry or anything. Well, I spoke to your boss, and after some persuasion, he'll let you off for the day."
"Really?"
"I was hoping to let you rest for a few more days, but..."
"No, it's... I... umm... thanks."
"It's nothing. Umm... why don't I fetch you home?"
"There's no need. I can manage. You should get back to your work."
"It's ok, I don't have anything important."
"Well, if you insist..."
"Yes, I do."
"Then I can't refuse, can I?"
"So get on."
Laughing, I clambered onto his back, and we took off.
=Dreamer's house=
I opened the door. Stepping into the house, I saw my dad sitting on the couch, reading the papers. My mum had probably went to buy some groceries.
"You're back early," my dad said, without taking his eyes off the paper.
"I had an accident. Got the day off."
"Who was the one with the blue fur?"
"We collided into each other. He brought me to the doctor's, then fetched me home."
"He's a devil."
"What's wrong with that?"
"Never trust a devil. All devils are evil, lying, cheating scum. Once you fall prey it's too late."
"Volten isn't like that! You don't even know him! He's kinder than many angels I know!"
"It's just a show. You've barely met for a few hours; how can you tell what kind of person he really is?"
"Well, I just... I just know. I can feel it!"
Saying that, I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut.
