Gone
Chapter 6
WuFei stomped through the hanger. He needed to get away from everyone and everything. Especially that onna! He shook his head, How she could be so stubborn was beyond him. As he rounded t he corner, to the hideaway the pilots had. He frowned as he saw the light under the door. He set his face into a scowl and moved quickly to the door.
“Damn, Maxwell.” he mumbled as he pushed open the door. “Can’t you ever turn off……….”
He stopped dead still, seeing the two people wrapped in each others arms, sleeping soundly. His face soften as he looked at them. He sighed, turned of the stereo and the lights, pulling the door quietly behind him. Perhaps he should go talk to her and set this right. It seemed the couple on the couch had done so. If Maxwell could , he could also. His foot steps became lighter as he walked away from the door.
~~~~~~~
Hilde woke up with a warm body next to her. She snuggled closer to him and kissed his neck. Then she looked up at the clock.
“AHHHHH! DUO!”
“AHHHHHH! WHAT?”
“We’re late!”
“Sally will kill us!”
~~~~~~~~~
Hilde hollered as she pulled the helmet off and threw open the simulator door.
“HAH! I knew I could do this. Duo! Come out and face your defeat!” She stood out side his door and tapped her foot impatiently. She stepped back as the door opened. He peeked out ,and grinned.
“Hilde! You kicked my ass! You are good!”
“You’re not mad?”
“Nope. You kicked my butt fair and square, this time! Wait till next time, Hilde Schibecker!” He said as he started to walk away. “I’ll see you in the café! I’m taking a shower.”
She grinned as she watched him limp away. “Sure, Maxwell! And don’t for get to bring it back.”
He stopped and turned around with a question on his face. Then it dawned on him what she had meant. He laughed and said, “Funny, Hilde, very funny.”
“Well, I thought so! See ya in a bit!”
As he went down the hall to the men’s shower, she turned and went the opposite direction, heading for the women’s showers.
She sighed as she went in and turned on the water. She let the hot water beat down on her. The simulator was hard work and if she wanted to beat Duo she would have to be on her toes at all times. She turned off the water and found a cubical to dress in. As she dressed, she heard some other girls come in. She heard her name and listened to the conversation.
“Hilde Schibecker! She is so smart. And look at that boyfriend she has! Gundam pilot, Duo Maxwell! I’ll introduce you to her. I think she just came from the simulator.”
“God! Did you see her score?”
“Yeah. Man I wish I was that good.”
“Well, I don’t get what’s so hot about a former oz pilot? She should be in jail, not here.”
“Hey! That’s my friend you’re talking about. Those are fighting words.”
Hilde stepped out of the cubical. “Sarah! Thanks for the vote of confidence , but I’ll fight my own battles.”
She smiled at the girl, who had been complaining about her.
“I’ll take you on any time in the simulator. You pick the time and the day.”
The other girl looked at her. “Ok, At midnight.”
Hilde nodded. “Ok. Midnight and we run the cameras to prove who the winner is. Do you want other witnesses?”
“Yeah, all these guys.”
Hilde looked around at all the other girls. “You agree?”
They nodded.
The girl turned to Hilde, “We tell no one, right.”
“If you want. The cameras will tell all.”
Hilde waved and headed out the door. “See you at midnight. Right now I have a boyfriend to meet and work to do.”
As soon as the door closed Sarah looked at the girl next to her. “Have you lost your mind, Megan! What are you thinking?”
Megan shrugged. “I’ll beat her.”
Sarah laughed. “You’re crazy and you won’t beat her.”
Megan tossed her head and crossed her arms over her chest. “I think I will.”
Sarah snorted, and walked away from her.
~~~~~~~~
Hilde shook her head as she hurried back to the barracks to get her laptop. She wondered what made her make that challenge. It was a stupid thing to do. She sighed, knowing how Duo and other pilots felt when they were challenged by others. She glanced at her watch. She had a few minutes before she would meet Duo in the café. She went into the barracks and snagged her laptop. She had to figure this out and sometimes two heads were better than one. She grinned as she entered the café, spotting Duo at a far table. He was watching the door, and waved when he saw her come in. She waved back snagging a cup of coffee as she hurried over to the table. As she set the coffee and the laptop down, he stood and kissed her. It was a quick peck, but a kiss none the less. She put her fingers to her lips and looked at him.
“….?”….?”
“Cause I missed you, Babe. I’m gonna make up for lost time and past mistakes.”
She blinked at him , then around the chair. “Ok Where’s Duo, the real Duo, what have you done with him?”
“Oh ,babe, you cut me to the quick!”
She giggled and looked at him, “Ok so what’s on the agenda today, Duo?”
“A rematch!” He said softly, “I have to get my rep back.”
“What?” She shook her head.
“I was kidding, Hilde! You did great today! I just wish…….”
She looked at him, “What?”
He shook his head, “Never mind.”
She reached across the table and grabbed his arm. “What is it, Duo?”
“It’s nothing…. Remembering the past. Let’s forget about it and get on with the now.”
She nodded and opened the lap top. Duo leaned over and watched her type.
“Hilde.”
“What?”
“Would you like to go to a movie tonight?”
She looked up at him, her fingers stopped moving> “Ok, Sure, I’d love to go to a movie with you. But I have to be back here by midnight. I made a stupid promise and I have to keep it.”
“What did you do?”
She sighed, “I was challenged to a duel in the simulator today and I took the bait.”
“Who are you fighting?”
“That new recruit, Megan.”
“Oh, her.” Duo frowned, “What has she have against you?”
“Oz.”
“Do you know her full name?”
Hilde shook her head, “ No, I don’t. I didn’t meet her until today.”
“Type this in,” He said, pointing to the keyboard. “ Megan Norwood.”
She opened the Preventer files and typed the name.
The file came up.
MEGAN NORWOOD
REASONS JOINED PREVENTERS:
I wanted to join the preventers because I want to help maintain world peace. I want to help people and have my father proud of me. I believe the preventers are good for all the people, not just the rich. I want to help protect Miss Relena Peacecraft and all she stands for. Although my father does not agree totally with these views, I believe they are right.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve for the Preventers.
Megan Norwood.
Hilde looked at him, “Duo? Isn’t he the one that wants the Preventers disbanded? Why is she h”
H”
He grinned, “Sabotage? To make us all look bad.”
“Or,” She said, “To get information against us.”
He reached across the laptop and grabbed her hands, “ You have to kick her ass tonight ,Hilde.”
“Will you come and be my support?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for anything.”
He watched as she put up the manifesto once more. “Hilde,” He asked frowning, “Why are some of these letters underlined and why are some of them capitalized? And why are these letters both?”
Hilde blinked , then looked at the letters he was pointing at. “Oh! Why didn’t I see that before! I’m a terrible code cracker! Thank You, Duo! That’s how we’ll break the code! I have to go to get on a desk top!” She stood and kissed his fully on the lips.
She started to walk away then turned to him. “Are you coming? You get credit for this, you know.”
He stood and walked up to her and grasped her arm. “Ok, babe, but on one condition.”
“What’s that, Duo?”
“We spend a little quiet time together, alone in the hideaway.”
“Ok, I guess we can do that.”
He nodded, as they walked to the main computer room to decode the manifesto.
Hilde sat down and opened the page with the manifesto on it. She typed in her code breaker pass word and typed instructions.
It took a few minutes but every capital and underlined word appeared on the screen. She then hit the decode instructions.
The words seemed the dance on the screen as they fell into place. The letters unscrambled as they reappeared. The program was gone in few minutes and they both stared at the screen.
I will destroy the preventers and all associated with them. They have done nothing good since they were created. They have not prevented wars or any small skirmishes that have occurred on Earth or the colonies. I believe we need military police. Not some volunteered based police system that does not work!!! So I will take it upon my self to end this atrocity. You will pay, Preventers, for all your wrong doing!
Duo looked at Hilde and she at him as the words continued down the page.
“Holy cow! We better get this to Une.”
“Yeah, but, Duo what about the underlined, capital words?”
“Can you decipher them right now?”
She shook her head. “No, I need more time. It looks complicated.”
“Let’s print this and take it to Une.”
She nodded as she hit the print button, then the save button. After it was all finished it was 16 pages of ranting and berating the Preventers. But there was noting about any attacks, yet. She wondered if there would be times and date in the other words that were a garbled mess.
Duo grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet. “Come on, Let’s go see Une.”
As they left the room someone else slipped in behind them. She sat down in front of one of the terminals and typed in a number.
She waited impatiently as the screen clicked and a familiar face appeared.
“Hello, father.”
“My dear. How is it going?”
“Well, sir, I have picked a fight, unfortunately it is not with a Gundam pilot. It is with that deserter Hilde Schibecker.”
He nodded. “That will suit you well. She should be an easy “kill” for you. If you destroy her, then you should be able to take others.”
“Yes, Father.” There was a pause.
“Is there more?”
“They have decoded the first part of your manifesto.”
He nodded again. “Yes. Yes. It’s all part of the plan…. By the time they decode the next part it will be too late.”
She nodded and smiled, knowing revenge would be sweet when she put the gun to Une’s head and pulled the trigger.
To be continued.
