Chapter 6
Hilde looked at the child on the ground in the barn. She pulled him to his feet and gathered him into her arms. He was cold and shivering.
He wrapped his arms around her neck as she comforted him. “Let’s get you inside , then we’ll go help your mom. “
He nodded as he clung to her. Hilde shot Heero a glare and he turned to get the horses ready. Duo , unsure what he should stayed back with Heero.
“Duo. You come help get the medical supplies ready.”
He shrugged and followed her into the house.
After a few minutes the y emerged from the house, with two bags and a rifle. Hilde had convinced the boy to stay behind in the warm house. Heero was waiting as they exited.
He looked over at Hilde who looked back at him.
“Can it be true, “ She asked out loud. “white men attacking unarmed old people , women, and children?”
Do said nothing , trying not to remember what the Treize did to the last people that had defied him.
Heero looked over at Duo and said to Hilde, “Ask him what Kushrinada is capable of doing.”
She looked over at him, “Well, is he…….” she never finished her sentence as Duo answered her question.
“Yes.” Was all he said.
Hilde kicked her horse and galloped away from them.
Heero watched her ride away, then turned to Duo, “This is your fault you know.”
Duo hung his head and said, ”Yeah, I know.”
“What are you going to do about it?”
“kill him.” Was his reply as he kicked his horse to catch up with the woman in front of them.
Heero blinked, never expecting that answer fro m the young man, he had considered a coward. He hurried to catch up to them.
Hilde’s mouth hung open as she whispered with dismay, “No….. oh god , no”
The village was in shambles. Huts were torn down and scattered about. Some were burning. There were bodies and wounded all over. She quickly rode into the village as some of the survivors came out to her. She dismounted and quickly ran to the wounded and dieing.
The chief’s wife sat in the snow looking at the carnage. In her arms was a small child.
“Singing Bird, “ Hilde called as she ran to her side. “Are you…..”
The woman looked up at h her and tried to smile. “I am unharmed.” She looked at the child in her arms, but I fear we are too late for this little one.”
Hilde looked at the child and put out her arms to take her. She quickly examined her and shook her head. “I….. I’m sorry.”
Singing Bird closed her eyes as silent tears ran down her face. She grasped Hilde’s arms.
“What will we dhe he men are hunting, it could be days before they return.”
“Do you have any idea where they are?”
She nodded ,slightly.
“Send a runner. You will be at my house. I will keep you warm and safe until then. I have knowledge of some warm dry caves near by my home. You can use them also. Are you sure you are all right?”
She nodded, ”Yes , please attend the wounded.”
Hilde clasped the woman’s shoulder and stood, hurrying to the next victim.
Duo dismounted and went to Singing bird.
“Ma’am. Can you tell me about the men who did this? Did they say anything?”
She looked up at Duo. “AH, you are the one.”
“Huh?”
“Yes, you are perfect.”
“What?”
She smiled, ”About the men, One was a tall white hair man, he seemed to be the leader. He said I was to tell Hilde to give him back what was his.” She paused. “I defied him,” She swept her hand around, “This is the results.”
Duo shook his head, “No, Ma’am, This is not your fault. I shouldn’t have been such a coward and killed him long ago.” He stood, helping her to her feet.” No, this is my doings. I should have not involved any of you.”
He turned away and looked over the carnage. “I’m sorry.”
She placed a hand on his shoulder. “Why is this your fault? Some men have evil hearts. There was nothing you could have done.”
He turned back to her, anger in his eyes, “I could have stayed and not ran away. I….”
“And what, “ Singing Bird snapped back, “ Young Maxwell? Stayed his slave until he finally killed you like h e did my son? And what of her? “ She asked pointing to Hilde. “Even if you hadn’t have escaped, he would have found her. She killed one of his men. He doesn’t know for sure but he suspects her of it.” The woman smiled. “I know she killed him and I know where the body is buried.”
Duo looked at the Indian woman then over to Hilde. “She did?” he asked in awe.
“Yes, you should ask her sometime.” She replied as she shivered in the cold air.
Duo looked at the shivering woman in front of him. His revenge could wait, but Treize would pay for this . He went to his horse and pulled a blanket from the back. He draped it over the woman’s shoulders and lead her back to his horse.
Heero stood in the snow watching as Duo helped Singing Bird to his horse, then watched Duo as he moved over to help Hilde with the wounded and the dead. He hated to admit it to himself but maybe this guy was what Hilde needed. He knew he wouldn’t be there for ever. Relena had begged him to come to town and stay near her. He had wanted to but with Hilde out here alone he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Even though he thought Duo a trouble maker he may be the answer he needed. He could see t he sparks happening between them as they worked together in this tragedy. He walked over and pulled a child to his horde. Perhaps He would be the one to take out Treize. At the thought of that he continued to put Children on his horse.
Several hours later, the wounded had been brought to Hilde’s small home. The seriously wounded were taken to the house , where the not as serious were placed in the barn. Heero had lead several ohe uhe uninjured to the caves Hilde had described.
Hilde wiped her hands as she finished stitching the last of the injured up. She was exhausted. It had been a very long day and she still had to prepare food for them all. She sighed and looked around the full house. At least they were all warn and dry for now. Even the injured in the barn were dry and warm. She hoped all faired well at the caves.
She turned as she felt some one move close to her, holding a cup of hot coffee in his hands. He slipped the coffee into her hands and smiled.
“Thanks, Duo, You’re a god send.”
“Yeah, considering this was my fault.”
She glared at him. “Stopped thinking like that!” She reprimanded him. “This was not your fault.”
He looked down at the floor. “Then who’s is its?”
“If you want to lay blame, Duo blame Treize for being a greedy bastard who wants nothing more than to destroy everything we have worked for out here. We are 3 months from state hood and the man won’t quit.” She sighed as she sipped the hot liquid.
Duo slipped his arm around her as she leaned up against him. She relaxed and closed her eyes for a minute. “We must get these people something to eat.” She said out loud, wondering where it would all come from. She turned so she could break free of Duo’s grip, but he wouldn’t let her go.
“Relax a minute. I think they will all be ok.”
She sighed as he turned her toward him. He looked down into her eyes and smiled. Then he leaned down and kissed her lips lightly.
She felt his fingers comb through her hair as his lips touched hers. She shivered slightly at his soft kiss and warm embrace. Never had any man made her feel like this and she wondered if it was real. She hoped so, cuz she liked it. After a brief moment his lips were gone from hers and they went to take care of the injured.
To be continued… I know short chapter… but I was getting tired and had to get of the compy for a While
