Chapter 6

 
 
 
 
Duo turned to Quatre, “The dragon on lonely Mountain? I know of only one on that mountain…” His eyes got wide. “Oh no, you don’t mean…”
Quatre nodded.
“Gack! You’ve got to be kidding!! She’ll eat me as to look at me!!”
Quatre grinned, “I really don’t think he’ll eat you. He is not like the others, ok?”
Duo sighed, “Yeah, well, you don’t know him as well as I do.”
Hilde reached out and grasped Duo’s arm. “What do you mean, Duo? What did you do to this dragon?”
Duo looked at her appalled. “I didn’t do anything to him. And for the record, He is a she.”
“A she?” Quatre asked in surprise.
“Yes.” Duo said, as he looked down to the ground, his face turning a deep shade of red.
Hilde looked at him, “What happened between you and this dragon, Duo?”
“I… Do you know they can shape shift?”
Hilde looked at him, her eyes becoming hard.
“I was young, OK? Inexperienced, naive.” He gulped.
“You had sex with a dragon!”
His mouth dropped open and he practically shouted, ”NO! That’s not what happened! I turned her down and she ………”
Hilde watched her lover shiver at the memory.
“She tried to force me…. I fought her. She tried to use that dragon mold or something on me. It didn’t work and I forced her back. I hurt her and she hurt me.” He shook his head, “I don’t think she’ll help me.”
Hilde frowned. “The claw marks on your chest.”
“She almost killed me, and I hurt her almost as bad. Not physically, but mentally. She watched me bleed and struggle for a few moments then she healed me.” He shook his head. “We were friends up to that point, then it was over. She told me if I ever came to her again she would kill me.”
Quatre looked at him, his blue green eyes filled with sympathy. “That was along time ago, Duo. Surely she will for give you.”
He shook his head. “They don’t for get, Quatre. They just don’t forget.”
Hilde frowned her eyes blazing. “I won’t let her you you, Duo. I’ll kill her first.”
He looked over at her with a sad smile. “Careful, Hilde, you know what’s happehen hen you get riled.”
“I don’t care!” She said with more conviction. “SHE WILL NOT HARM YOU.”
He reached out and pulled her into a tight hug. “It’s ok.” He said, softly. He let his healing powers slip into her and calm her. “You have to be calm when we go. You may have to get the article, not me.” He whispered, in her ear before he collapsed heavily in her arms.
She growled softly, knowing what he had done. She lowered him to the ground, feeling the calm he had fed her rush through her body, relaxing her. “Damn it, I wish he wouldn’t do that.”
She looked up at Quatre. ”I’m gonna be the death of him, you know.” She commented, and then looked back at the unconscious man in her arms. “ I love him so much, Quatre.” She whispered as tears slipped down her face. She pulled him closer to her.
Quatre placed a hand on her shoulder, “No, you are the life of him. And he loves you, too.”
She looked up at him, with a look of confusion. “I….”
“You have a secret you haven’t shared yet.” He said as he knelt down beside her. He watched her face flush red and then said. “You two have been destined to be together since before time. You are soul mates. You would have seeked him out, just as he would have you. Now you are both tied by magic and something else. Something small and vulnerable.” He reached over and brushed away her tears just as Duo began to stir. “It would not be wise for him to see your tears. He feels enough guilt as it is. And share the small secret, soon. I think you will be surprised at his reaction, Hilde. “
She eyed Quatre, “How diu geu get so wise and how come you know this “Secret?”
He grinned at her and stood. “You and I are a lot a like in some ways, but I know I could never hold your heart. I knew that before I even asked you. It belonged to him before you even knew him. And I can feel the energy of your secret.”
She shook her head. “You never fail to astound and confuse me, Quatre. “
He grinned. “I know. Perhaps someday I will tell you the other secret I hold. The secret of your own birth. But that shall wait, becausu neu need not be burdened with this minor detail. All I shall say is you are my family.” He pointed to the awaking Duo, “As is he. It is not pertinent to this mission so don‘t think any more of it. I shall meet you at the inn in two days time. I hope you have achieved the mission to the dragon’s lair by that time. So long, little sister.”
He suddenly disappeared and flitted away.
Hilde frowned and muttered to herself. “I think he enjoys astounding me.”
Duo blinked and replied, “Me too.”
Hilde looked down into his violet eyes and kissed him before she began to give him a tongue lashing for using his powers on her yet again. He just grinned at her the entire time.
After she slowed down, he looked at her. “Are you though? How about letting me go and we can get going? I really don’t want to face her again, but I suppose…”
Hilde ‘s face flushed once again to a bright crimson as she released her hold on him. He stood and then grasped her hand and pulled her to her feet.
As they walked down the trail Hilde glanced over at Duo. “Why didn’t you take the dragoness’ offer of sex?”
He sighed. “She is a dragon. I was a little put off by that. If I had taken her offer, she would have bound me forever. She would have had my heart and soul. I didn’t want that. “ He looked over at her as she walked beside him. He reached out for her hand and grasped it. “I knew there was someone else out there for me. I was waiting for that person. It wou.”ou.”
She flushed at his candid words. “I… don’t know what to say.” She stuttered.
“Tell me you love me and kiss me.”
She stopped and stepped over to him. She stood on her tiptoes and gave him a quick peck on his lips, teasing him. She opened her mouth to speak but Duo’s was suddenly on hers. She relaxed and let the kiss deepen in passion. Duo nudged his tongue into her mouth, searching for hers. Their tongues danced and mingled. After a few more minutes, they both broke the kiss mutually and stood in the center of the trail wrapped in each other’s arms.
“Now about that statement.”
“I love you, Duo Maxwell! But stop using your healing powers to calm me down!”
“Ah but what else can I use them for but for you, babe.”
“I worry about you.”
He frowned, “Why? I’m hardly worth your worry and any tears you cry over me. I‘m not that important. ”
She grasped his shirt and looked up at him. “You are important to me.” She said, early, trying to make her point. She looked away. “Very important. My life…. My. Everything…. With out you I would die. And I don’t mean that in the literal s, Du, Duo. I mean that in the heart and soul sense. I would have nothing to live for. Do you understand?”
He looked down at her and pulled her in a tight embrace. “ Yeah, me too, babe, me too.”
He released her and they clasped hands and continued down the path with a new understanding between them.

Quatre smiled as he flitted near by. He watched them embrace then continue on down the path. Neither one of them felt worthy of each other or the task at hand but he knew they could pull it off. He knew between the two of them they could save the queen’s son and restore the balance of power. He turned and moved away into the forest, heading for the inn and some one he wanted to see.

Mariemaia had to come up with a plan to get the boy out of the castle and to her hiding place. She knew of her father’s plans but she had plans of her own. If it meant using this boy to get them then she would. It would teach her father not to underestimate her. She giggled as she started to work out the idea in her head. The lady would be proud of her but very angry. Perhaps her father would boud oud too. She didn’t know but she had means and now she needed a plan.

The path to the dragoness’ lair was a treacherous one. It was rough years ago but Duo found it had gotten rougher. The landscape had changed drastically since the last time he had been here. But it had been at least 10 years since she had lured him into her home. He had be a gangly youth of 16 when he had gotten lost in these woods and she had called him, with promises of food and warmth. It had been just a game to her but he wanted no part of it. Being tied to a dragon was not what he wanted with his life at that time. He had wanted adventure and action. Duo reached back and grasped Hilde’s arm and pulled her up beside him as they climbed the rocks to the opening of her cave. He sighed as he looked ahead. This was one meeting he didn’t want to makee kne knew it was her home because there was no snow gathered around therancrance. He stepped forward cautiously. Pulling Hilde with him.
“Are you sure I should go in with you?“ She asked, softly, not from fear but concern.
He nodded.
“I know dragons tend to be, Um … jealous of other females…. And well…”
“I want you to come. She can’t stop that.”
“Ok.”

They stepped ever so closer to the dark cave as a few puffs of steam issued from the opening.

 
A loud noise made then both jump and a shuffling sound met their ears.
“Hoo boy, this is it,” muttered Duo.
Hilde glanced over at him as a looming shadow came out of the darkness at them.
She looked up and opened her mouth in awe.
