Chapter 6

Heero and Duo traveled over a few good cold and rainy miles to the nearest village which took them about five hours. By the time they got there both males were shivering and wishing for some kind of warmth, luckily the storm had not destroyed it there was a twelve foot high wood fence built around it though.

Duo and Heero were walking down the carriage warn path now and it was mid afternoon a good time to approach any village. The village was still a very religious village and actually feared the forest thus why it built walls to protect its self from the devils that may lie within.

There for it was bound to also be very weary of strangers, the gates were closed at all times and had two guards in towers on each side.

“Who goes there,” a voice called out from the tower on the left, the cool breeze blew through Duo and Heero’s clothes that seemed to never dry and be damp all of the time so it made it very miserable to walk in the open. Duo wished to discard his cloths and ring them out and dry them over a fire. Even if they tried the consent drizzle would keep their clothes pretty much wet the full time.


“Just two weary travelers we got caught in the storm that raged last night that came from the southeast of here, We just would like to pass through and perhaps get dry clothes” Heero answered Duo never had dealings with a village before but Heero said him wearing his young priests robes might get them better access and swift trust of the village.

The man looking down from the tower eyed them, he had pretty green eyes and light brown hair comb swept over one eye. He wore white leggings underneath a brown tunic and had a hat on his head with a feather also he had a leather belt holding together his tunic with bow and arrows leaning in a quiver next to him at the watch window. The man listened to Heero then noticed Duo. “You bring a priest boy with you are you on some kind of spiritual journey or quest?”

“Yes we are,” Heero answered for Duo so he didn’t have to outright lie to anyone, “we are going down a long and difficult road physically toward the path of enlightenment, last nights storm was barely a mere trial that we had to endure. We see we are in the Lord’s favor as he has spared our lives to live yet another day and he has led us to this village so that we may bless it and it will bless us with hospitality perhaps?” Heero said giving a bit of a bow at the waist he opened his hands a bit as well looking very charming as he did so.

The other guard listing liked what he had to say and he didn’t see any reason why he shouldn’t trust a priest on a spiritual quest to get closer with the lord it sounded noble enough of a cause to him. He had blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes dressed in a dark green tunic he had on a black belt and black leggings. “Alright let em into the village” The other Guard said to his partner.

The other guard looked the men over a bit more but being a priest for the other boy didn’t seem like he would be evil. “Very well you may enter,” The boy then began to grind a lever in the tower he opened the gates wide enough so Heero and Duo could slip through but only just enough.


Once Duo and Heero walked through the guard quickly shut the gate almost at their heels. The village was nice sized village. It even had a market place and an Inn which Heero headed for right away. Duo was looking around the village though a lot of the houses were built next to one another they were all brown and looked pretty dull nothing to fancy to look at. People peered out of window’s at the new comers it had been awhile since any strangers had come to call. Duo noted that the grey clouds made the village seem even more dull and lifeless even with people.

Heero turned the corner of a building to the right the two came to a market place where he saw the Inn sign. Duo saw that the people were still working even if it was a dreary day. They sold all kinds of things down this lane there was a cloth booth for new clothes. Meat and fish stand you could also pay to get your cows butchered. A bakery though they had their own shop inside a building. There was a jewelry vender a fruit and vegetables vender. This section of town would normally be very busy but most people stayed at home because of the rain.

Duo fallowed Heero to the end of the side walk that ran behind the venders stands they made a left to cross the street to get to the Inn that gave a nice view of a lake. There was also a church if they would have turned right they would be walking toward a red church that sits up on a hill.

Heero really didn’t want to draw to much attention to themselves he just wanted to get Duo dry and warm for now. The two finally come outside the three story white front building that has black shutters on either side of the windows. It has a large front porch with rocking chairs on either side of the double white painted doors.

Heero walked up the front steps and turned around he saw Duo had not fallowed him. Duo had stopped a few yards away he was still looking down at the market place. Though he had crossed the street with Heero. Duo had never seen anything like this before he was just so curious.

Heero quickly walked back down the steps, as he walked toward him a sheriff stepped up next to Duo from the left as he crossed the street. “Good afternoon,” The officer greeted Duo who turned to look at the man. The officer was much taller than Duo with long red hair he kept in a high pony tail he had a pointed face and grey greenish eyes. “I haven’t seen you before are you looking to go to the church for Father Porter?”

“Well not necessarily, I just came into this village because I am hoping to get dry clothes with my companion.” Duo realized he had stopped walking without telling Heero or warning him.

“Yes, that we are” Heero came over to Duo’s side, “Just passing through officer on our spiritual quest. Now come along Brother lets get inside and leave the nice officer to his businesses?” Heero placed a hand on his shoulder it was more like a command then a question.

“Hmn I see well I hope you two can enjoy your stay then,” The officer though eyed Heero as if he had seen him some place before but he couldn’t put a finger on it just yet.

“Good day officer” Duo nodded before turning away with Heero once they were out of ear shot of the man Heero turned to Duo as they walked.

“Don’t do that again keep your wits about you,” Heero whispered in Duo’s ear as they both walked up the steps to the Inn Duo gave a slight nod. Heero opened the door and the bell rang as he did so. Right away as they enter their skin feels the nice warmth of the three fires that are crackling away on the right hand side of the large common room.

There was a bar that ran the length of the left hand side of the room there was tables and chairs set up where a few people were eating lunch. When they entered everyone turned to see who had come in today they see new comers which is very nice in some ways to the same people they always see.

“Good Afternoon what can I help you with?” A lady asked sounding as kind as could be. She walked toward them from behind the bar she had curly strawberry blonde hair that was pulled back into a bun she had on a white bonnet and a black dress with a white apron.

“Good afternoon,” Heero greeted her he stepped closer to the bar Duo stayed near him this time though he saw a few of the men eyeing him it seemed they were trying to make something of him. “Yes you can help us I was wondering if perhaps you had a room available with a fire place that we may dry our clothes over? Also perhaps we could stay in the inn for awhile I am looking for a job you see I need some money if you like perhaps we can help you with the Inn if you need any to make up for the cost of staying here tell we get on our feet again. If that can’t happen I do have enough to pay for a weeks’ worth for staying in the inn.”

The lady looked them over from head to toe, “yes I have a room you may use and it will cost you two gold piece for a weeks worth of staying, I suppose I wouldn’t mind the help I am the only one who runs this inn having a male around would do nice but I don’t know you so I can’t began to trust that you won’t be robbing me blind when the week is over. So I say you may stay this week and gain my trust then we shall see. So perhaps you should first tell me your names that will help then I can give you a key to your room.” The lady took a piece of paper from under the counter and also a ink bottle and a pen for Heero to write his name down.

“Alright sounds fair enough to me, what do you say brother?” Heero wondered since Duo wasn’t a father they called the young priest boys brother.

“Sounds fine enough to me,” Duo shrugged he couldn’t wait to get into that room and ring himself dry already. Heero wrote his name down on the paper and wrote Duo’s no one would know their names as no one had ever heard of Duo in this town before Heero had run far away from the village he was suppose to die in so these people wouldn’t know them.

“Alright Heero and Duo,” the lady smiled as Heero slid the paper back to her with two gold coins on it. She had read the names on the slip of paper of course.

“Also how much would it before two meals and drinks?” Heero wondered standing up straight from here he had bent to write.

“That is two copper pennies,” she answered them, “but I’ll make it one for you since we have a young priest in the Inn perhaps he shall bless it I’ll take that as his payment for his food.”

“Well that is so very kind of you Ms?” Duo nodded his head at the lady, “but you don’t have to do such an act though I believe your kindness and want for a blessing is valid enough. So do not fear I am sure the Lord blesses your Inn. But I can’t say for sure as I am not fully close enough to the Lord to say for sure.”

“My Name is Ms Kay,” She answered Duo’s ms since they told there names to her. “What do you mean not close enough to know for sure?” She blinked her big shinny eyes.

“Well he is on a spiritual journey right now to become more in favor with the Lord you see.” Heero cut into Duo before he ruined everything with his honesty.

“Ah I see and who are you suppose to be his spiritual guard?” Kay wondered leaning on the counter some she was somewhat interested now in these two which could be bad she was being pulled into Heero’s charms to quickly.

“That I am,” Heero nodded, “Anyways if you’ll excuse us Ms, Kay I need to get the Brother dry,” Heero said and ushered Duo away from the counter.

“Alright I’ll have your meals sent to you in twenty five minutes” Kay called after them Heero waved his hand but didn’t turn around as he read the number on the key they came to the 12th room on the first floor Heero unlocked it there was a hard wood floor two single beds and a dresser in front of them with a chamber pot. There was a fire place a crossed from the door.

Heero soon had both there clothes hanging on a rope over the crackling fire high enough to dry them but not burn or catch them on fire. There meal wasof warm roast beef and two slices of bread with butter and two halves of yellow cheese they had nice cool water to drink.

Both boy’s ate hungrily, once they were full Duo sat on the bed naked with Heero behind him who was also naked, with a brush in his hand he ordered from the Inn. He had locked the door so no one could bug them and had closed the drapes also locked the window.

Now both young lads were feeling warmer, “It sure feels so nice to be in such a cozy warm place” Duo said to Heero who was using the brush like a pick to get the tangles out of Duo’s sopping wet hair that seemed to have collected a waterfall.

Heero smiled, at what Duo said as he worked the rats free of Duo’s hair, “yes situations like this do make you thankful for such warm places doesn’t it?” Heero whispered in Duo’s ear and kissed him on the cheek then down to his neck. Duo tilted his head to the side automatically Heero sort of forgot about brushing Duo’s hair.

The two then settled down snuggling together on the other bed and fell to sleep right away. As both young men were very tired and could probably sleep for a good while. Heero had pulled the blankets over the both of them since Duo didn’t seem to be able to keep his eyes open long enough for that. He just used Heero as his pillow and was out.

Heero kissed Duo’s forehead once he was covered and laid his head down and soon fell to sleep.
