Scene Six
En swallowed consciously as the rain continued to dart down furiously on the outside. That odd sound always had this weird mix of gritty but percussion-like quality to it, the rain continued to drum on as En allowed herself to reminisce the past.
That day started just like any other day, there were never ending amount of carcasses to get rid of, the air was thick with moisture, but somehow the rain just wouldn't come down. En had not have a drink since last night and being caked with dried mud as usual, the crumbling mud surface on her skin turning into dust at every movement was not helping the situation. To make matters worse, it has not even been half the day and already she was dizzy from starvation. En had survived worser days than this before, her usual last resort was to pierce a side of her tongue using her canines just to feel a bit of moisture in her mouth from the temporary squirt of blood. She kept telling herself that this was only temporary, and the day would soon be over, but the only thing that kept her reality in check was that she was still on her first carcass, barely scorched on the surface, the quality of the energy blasts had been poor at best, they had mostly disappeared almost as soon as they were formed.
En was starting to see things in double, and she shook her head furiously, shaking bits of dried mud at he same time like a sparrow in a sand bath. From the corner of her eyes, there was something moving underneath the sand. She squinted her eyes and tried to focus. It was not long before when a shiny, black centipede broke free from below the sand surface and scurried away. En stared at the moving critter, as if mesmerised at first at its illusion-like effects created from its multiple-legged movements, before pouncing on it like a lion cub. The centipede was at least a fifth of her tiny size and it struggled furiously, hissing from its mouth, opening and closing its pincers furiously and waved its poisonous tail end threateningly.
En clasped onto the upper part of the centipede with both of her hands, and bit off the head of the centipede then quickly spat it out in the opposite direction, she then proceeded to dig her right hand onto the edge of the centipede's upper body shell and peeled off the protective layer all the way to the tip of the tail. With the centipede's legs still moving like erratic puppet limbs, she pressed her mouth onto the baring firm flesh of the crawler and began tearing chunks of it off, sucking, slurping and licking any liquid that flowed from the impact. The flavour was bitter and the stench was pungent, but she could not care, she could not afford to care. She continued to devour this piece of unpleasant but life sustaining carcass until all that was left was the shell. She did feel more focused, but the pain in the stomach had not stopped, in fact it had gotten worse.
Her body had activated a survival mechanism by attempting to vomit out what she just consumed, stubbornly, she used her new source of energy to force it down. It's OK, she told herself, I can make it through this, this day will soon be over, and before I know it, my portion of ration will be given out, and hopefully, rain will come. She felt a drop land on the tip of her nose. She looked up.
The silvery threads of rain followed suit, within seconds she could feel her mud-caked face being cleansed like with a soft cloth made of microfibres. The temperature had cooled down immediately and puddles were formed everywhere. Ecstatically, she opened her mouth. There was no sensation where the rain drops hit, nor could she feel the ice cold liquid going down her oesophagus. She blinked and everything seemed to be getting darker by the minute , the rain seemed to be like woolly, vertical statics, interweaving each other, the shape of the sand hutts were dark and blurry. The rain came down heavier, washing everything down with bucketloads at a time. When she blinked again, all she could see was pitch black.
Then she heard a voice.
It was a gruff voice.
"Stupid kid!" Boomed the unknown source of the voice.
Being blind while being poured continuously with icy rain water at the time, the only clue she had of the source of the voice was that it was coming from before her, she then turned on her heels and ran. A strong hand grabbed her almost immediately and jerked her backwards, forcing her to land on her back and into a small puddle. She thrashed about like a trapped beast as she tried to fight off the unknown predator, feeling the strong arm forcing her down. Out of desperation, she jolted her left hand upwards and shot an energy blast. Immediately she could hear the wounded growl of the unknown suspect and could feel its grip loosen slightly on her. With another energy blast from her right hand, the grip was finally released and she quickly pounced up and dashed off. It took only a few steps before her legs gave out and she involuntarily kneeled on the sand. She could not feel any sensation in her legs, they may as well be artificial limbs. Before she tried to crawl with the remaining working limbs, her arms, she felt the predator grab her by the scruff of her neck and picked her up. Before she could struggle, she felt a quick but controlled punch to her thoracic diaphragm and fell into unconsciousness.
Crash.
En flinched at the thunder that brought her back to reality. No matter how long it had been, no matter how secure and impenetrable her own home was from any alarming threats from the outside, En still could not get used to the thunder. To this day she questioned whether it was to do with what happened that day, or that she wished that that day had never come. There was still some good with that day right, she reassured herself, as she focused back to the memory.
When she woke up, she was immersed in bright, white light.
It took a while before her eyes finally adjusted to the unnatural brightness, her heavily lidded eyes cautiously opened to gather her surroundings. The air smelled strong with harsh, stinging disinfectants, it was also cold as she felt the artificially generated breeze circulate the room. There were faint sounds of machinery humming away. She tried to get up, but felt the cold, heavy restraints. Looking around, she found that she was cuffed down with three, flat metallic bolts that wrapped her body as well as her four limbs across the table like a taxidermised insect. To her horror, the inside of her left elbow has a syringe with the needle pierced into her skin, attached to it was a transparent tube with unknown liquid being slowly dripped into it, from a transparent, sealed bag that hung from a metallic stand. Worst part was, she could not move it, let alone tear that unknown container off. She tried flexing her left arm and make a fist, but to no avail the needle wouldn't come off. In a panic she tried flexing her whole body and wriggled very limitedly, to her relief, the sensation was back in her legs again. En winced as she felt the dull pain in her thoracic diaphragm where she was punched by the unknown enemy. She closed her eyes and wriggled as best as she could, and was very relieved to see that she still had her tail.
She poked her tail out to the left side of her body, and gingerly wrapped it around the syringe that attached the tube to the needle. Wincing and anticipating for any unprecedented pain ahead, she took a deep breath of cold air, the air was so cold she felt as if her lungs had chunks of ice being thrown down into it, she did her best to hold it in, then angling the syringe carefully without upsetting the small puncture wound, she slid the needle away from the direction it was inserted in. En exhaled deeply as the metallic nuisance was out completely and the sound of it landing and clinking on the table sounded so relieving to her. But what now? She thought to herself as she massaged her puncture wound with the tip of her tail.
She heard foot steps.
It came from the front.
She then got very annoyed at herself that she didn't notice that there was a door right in front of the table, which was tilted at 45 degrees facing the door, the hackles at the back of her neck stood up as she yanked the syringe off the tube with her tail and hid it behind her, curving her back slightly to make room for the concealed weapon, eyeing on the door. Any second now, she thought to herself.
The door opened on both ways, screeching a mechanical sound that was alien and harsh to her ears.
A short green lizard with orange hair sprouting from the top of its head came through, wearing a white robe equipped with armour-like yellow protective shoulder pads on each side.
"Ah, you're awake. I'm surprised you made it through." The voice seemed gentle enough to En, but she kept her guard up.
Smiling cheerfully, the lizard alien walked casually towards En and examined her from a safe distance, then looked at the screen behind her, where she could not see.
"Let's see, your sugar level is up to standard now, the poison is all cleared, (muttering more medical jargons), and you're obviously alert, we just have to wait for him to pick you up."
Him?
The sentence puzzled En, she did not know anyone, let alone anyone knowing of her existence. To her, any living being was a potential threat, the only beings that were safe to be around with were the ones that were already dead. Not wanting to complicate this bizarre encounter even more, she kept her mouth shut, her eyes never left this strange lizard. She then heard more footsteps coming towards them.
She winced again with the screeching as the doors opened, she eyed at the stranger that walked casually towards her.
"Finally awake huh kid? How was she doc?" It was the same gruff voice from before.
"I'd say she's ready to go with you, she was already well alert before I even made it here." Spoke the lizard doctor.
En did not like the fact that she was the subject of this conversation, she did not like this unwanted attention as she slowly tensed up. She felt her eyes widen, then tried to make them look as neutral as she could. She looked around slowly, carefully examining any clues that could make her escape. Then, to the lizard doctor's left, there was a relatively low platform that seemed to be custom made for him to perform tasks on, but from all the buttons that were built on the surface, there was a big, shiny red one that seemed to be the most distinct from the rest. En was not familiar with any forms of advanced technologies, but somehow that distinctive red button drew the most attention from her.
Only one shot. She thought to herself.
She eyed back at the speaking duo who seemed to be in deep conversation, she had no intention of remaining her and be kept like a scientific experiment as she slowly calculated the angle of her planned attack. But what should I do, she thought to herself, they don't seem to be too interested in anything except my condition, what to do to make them distracted? After a few seconds into deep thoughts, she had an idea.
"EEeaaaaaaaahhrrghghhh!!! Heerrghhaaaaah!!"
"What!? What the she was fine before?!" The lizard doctor quickly rushed to En's right side of the table as she thrashed and seemed to be spasming uncontrollably underneath the bolts, foaming at the mouth as she gurgled uncomprehendable sound.
"This isn't good, we need to put her in intensive care, maybe the poison did make it after all!" Said the lizard doctor, he then turned around and pressed the big red button, which immediately released En from the table.
En leaped into the air and threw the weapon at the gruff voiced individual with her tail. She landed before the door and dashed out as soon as it opened, not staying behind to see if the weapon hit the target. The light blue coloured metallic floor is too smooth and slippery and she almost fell as she proceeded to dash forward with her roughly made shoes that were made of unknown animal pelt. Finding that she seemed to not being able to advance with her current action, she resorted to alternate between jumping onto the concave surface of the hallway wall and leaping across the floor, and vice versa. The hallway was built with circular walls that concaved towards the outside which made it even more harder to predict which way she was going, but for now, anywhere but where she was before. Her instinct told her to try and find any door that seemed to lead to the outside rather than being further inside this unknown building. Doors on the right and door on the left, they whirred past her like ridiculous rotocopes of repetitive animation and none of them seemed to promise her the escape passage. Finally she saw this huge black door at the very end of it and with a great of joy she leapt and landed in front it, and felt ecstatic to see it open.
Only to see a room full of fully armoured Saiyans.
Ooooh cliff hanger, haha!
