Chapter 7

 
 
 
After Hilde finished feeding the last person on the floor she turned to Duo ,Looking up at him.
“Well, I think that’s all of them.” She sighed. “Now it’s your turn.”
Duo nodded, then looked in the pot. “Hmm, there isn’t much left, Hilde.”
“I know, You have it, You worked hard, today.” She said as she poured the last of it into a bowl. He pushed back at her, “No, you have it.”
“Duo.” She looked up at him and saw the determination on his face. “Alright we’ll share what’s left.”
After the food was gone, Hilde walked through the people, checking them all, making sure all bandages were tight and secure.

Duo watched her as she moved through, talking to and checking each one, He wondered what she would say if he told her he wanted her, loved her? His thoughts were interrupted by the front door opening and Heero stepping in.

“We can start taking them to the caves.”
Hilde nodded as she went to get her coat.
“No.” Heero said, “Duo and I will do it. You stay here.”
Heero looked across the room at Duo who was still leaning against the counter. He saw Duo’s slight nod as he moved to get his coat. Heero looat tat the injured people. This would take several hours, but it was necessary.

Heero picked up the first person and started for the door. Duo followed suit. As they moved away from the house, Heero turned to Duo. “What are your intentions?”
“Huh?”
“With Miss Hilde.”
“Oh.”
“Well?”
“I want to stay if she’ll let me.”
Heero eyed him as they walked through the cold night. “If she’ll let you? What do you mean?”
“I…..well…. I want to stay with her. Not just as a friend…I want to ….”
Heero growled.
Duo glanced over at him, wondering if he was going to hit him when they put down the women they were carrying.
“Heero…. I have no intention of ever leaving her if she let’s me stay. I……I.. Think I love her.”
Heero’s head whipped over to look at Duo’s in the dark. “Love? Are youre ure it’s not lust?”
Duo shook his head in the dark, then realized Heero couldn’t see him. “No, it’s different. Do you know we share the same bed and I have never touched her in that way. So, I know this…….Why am I telling you this??”
Heero growled again. “Because you have to. I want to know you’ll take care of her when I’m gone.”
“Are you leaving?”
“Yes. My woman wants me to come to town and be by her. I want to go to her.”
“Oh. And you want my promise I’ll stay?”
“Hn.”
“I promise to stay as long as she’ll have me, Heero.”
“Hn.”
An easy silence settled between them as the carried out their task. As they were nearing the end, Duo turned to him.
“Heero, when do you plan to leave?”
“In a few days. I will help replenish the stores before I go.” He looked up at the lightening sky. “Soon the heavy snows will fall and you will be trapped out here. You will see no one for days and it will be cold. I will not leave till I know that there will be enough supplies.”
Duo nodded as they trudged back to the warm house. As they came close to it, Heero left Duo to return to his own little house and Duo walked over to the barn, making sure the animals were all right and the door was closed. He sighed as he pulled the door shut and moved to the house. He could feel Heero’s eyes on him as he walked to the house. It had been a long night but all the Indian people had been moved to the caves.
He slipped off his boots as he stepped into the house, dropping them softly to the floor. His coat was wet with snow. He was chilled to the bone. He took off the coat and shook it gently, then hung it up next to the door on a hook and walked over to the sleeping Hilde. He looked down at her , then walked to the slowly dieing fire. He knelt down and tossed a couple of logs onto the blaze. He watched the flames for a few moments, letting the heat soak into his cold and damp body. His pant legs and his socks were wet with snow, numbing the skin. He shivered as he stood. He leaned over and pulled off the wet socks and laid them on the floor. Mutt looked up at him and whined. He reached over and petted the dog’s head. He straightened up and moved across the floor, to the sleeping woman on the couch.
He kissed her gently, then gathered her into his arms, to carry her to the bed. It was still her bed, because they hadn’t consummated anything in it .Her arms went around his neck as he walked toward the bedroom, and she snuggled into his chest. As soon as he laid her on the bed , her eyes opened. She watched him as he walked over to the small stove and started to stoke it. She quickly unbuttoned her shirt and pulled off her jeans. He was so engrossed with filling the stove he never noticed her stripping. She quickly slid under the covers and waited for her soon to be lover. He stood and turned toward the bed, stripping off his clothes as he moved closer to it. He quickly slipped under covers and was shocked to find a naked Hilde sliding up against him. Her warm soft skin sent shivers all long his cold damp skin.

She smiled and pecked his lips. “I love you ,too, Duo.” She leaned back down on his chest and answered his question before he asked it. “I think I fell in love with you that first day the Indians brought you to my door. I just knew you were the one .”
He hugged her as he reached for the covers , covering them up. They fell into a dreamless slumber.

Later in the day, Hilde woke to wet soft kisses on her face and a gentle hand on her breast, teasing the nipple to hardness. She turned as the lips kissing her face kissed her lips. His fingers sought out her center and began to stroke her, getting her to moan in delight. Swas was suddenly aware of a heavy weight on her and his knees between her legs. Duo leaned down and kissed her as he pushed her legs open so he could have access to her. She felt him at her entrance and waited in anticipation for him to slide in. A few hours later, Heero Yuy stepped into the room and glared at the two people tangled in each others arms. He knew what had happened here. He growled as he went over and pulled Duo from the bed.
“Damn it! What did I tell you!”
“Unnn.” Was Duo’s reply as he was dumped unceremoniously onto the floor ,still half a sleep. Hilde sat up with the blanket wrapped around her.
“What the hell are you doing, Mr. Yuy?” Came her startled cry.
Heero glared at the naked man on the floor. “I told him…”
Hilde growled. Heero looked over at her. “What did I tell you about my virtue, MR. Yuy? And I want you to know …even though , I DO NOT HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU, “ She said slowly emphasizing each word. “I SEDUCED DUO HERE, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!”
He glared at Duo. “ You will stay with her.”
Duo nodded, “If she‘ll have me.”
Hilde glared at the two men and pulled the blanket from the bed. She stepped over Duo and brushed past Heero. “ GRRRR!! MEN!!! Stop talking about me like I’m not here. I’m going to make coffee. Any one want some?” She turned toward the door . “Heero. Do not touch him. If I find one bruise on him , you will answer to me. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?”
Heero looked at the man on the floor the n up at Hilde. He growled in a soft voice as he pulled Duo to his feet. “If you hurt her in any way, I’ll kill you.”
“Get in line. “Duo replied.
Heero glared at him then stomped from the room. Duo sighed and dressed. He checked the fire in the small stove , stoking it with more tinder. He then left the small room. He stepped into the other part of the house to see Hilde sitting on the couch in a stare down contest with Heero. She stared at him and her him. They both held a cup of coffee in their hands. Neither looked at him as he slipped on his boots and coat, and went into the cold afternoon air.
Duo went to the barn and checked the animals, seeing they had already been fed. He then picked up the ax that was sitting beside the door and returned to the cold. He walked to the wood pile and began chopping wood. He shrugged off his coat after a bit, allowing the cold air to cool his sweat soaked skin. His could vent his frustrations and still get something done.
Hilde listened to the ax slamming into the wood and she stood, pulling the blanket around her.
She set the cup down and turned to Heero. “I have work to do, Don’t you? And stay out of my love life.”
She started to move away, but he stopped her, with a hand to her shoulder.
“Do you love him?”
She turned to him, a retort on her lips, but seeing the honesty in his face she stopped and replied, simply. “Yes, Heero, I do.”
“Be careful with this, Hilde. Does he love you?”.
“Yes, I think so.”
“Will he stay here with you?”
“ I b I believe he will.”
“Treize still wants him.”
“I’ll deal with Treize when I need to. I don’t fear him.”
“You should.”
She looked up at him, “What do you know?”
He shook his head, “Nothing…. Just rumors that have going around.”
“What did Relena tell you?”
He shook his head. “She said nothing, really. She said she heard that Treize would do anything to get revenge on her brother and to get back at you. ” He sighed, “I must go to her. She could be used ins trs trap. But I fear for you, too, Hilde. You are like the sister I never had.”
Hilde’s anger softened. “Finally the truth , Mr. Yuy.” She reached out and clasped his hand. “But you do not need to worry about me, I can protect myself. You know this. I have been here alone for many years. And with Duo and the chief around , I don’t have many worries.” She sighed, “But with this last fiasco, I must refill my larders before the big snows arrive. The chief will bring me meat and I can snare small animals myself. Duo will help ,too.”
Heero nodded, “That’s why I’ll stay a few more days before I leave. I‘ll help you get ready. I don‘t believe Treize will try anything , yet. But you must be alert. He is capable of anything.”
She nodded and then turned. “Well, I best get dressed. We need to haul water to the cistern. I know it has to be low.” She turned to Heero. “Please make amends with him, Heero.”
Heero nodded slightly , and turned to the coffee pot. He pored a cup and carried it to the door. He could still hear the ax coming down hard on the wood. He stepped out on to the porch and moved down the steps, he’s eye’s on the young man splitting the w He He could see the anger in each swing of the ax. Heero walked over to the young man and stopped beside him. Duo looked up and set the ax down on the ground. Heero handed him the cup of coffee. Duo took it gratefully, sipping the hot brew.
“So are ya gonna hit me or what?”
Heero shook his head. “No, Hilde told me to make amends. We have lots of work to do, before I go to town.” Heero turned away and looked to the sky. “Duo, Promise me you’ll look after her. Things could be bad from here on out. What Treize has done to the Indians is just a sign of what will come. Relena has discovered a rumor that Treize plans revenge on her brother and on Hilde. I must go to Relena and protect her as she could be used against her brother. Treize wants you and he’ll go after Hilde to get you.”
Duo nodded as he took another sip of the coffee.
“All the signs indicate the worst of the winter is coming and things must be prepared.”
“I promise to take care of her, Heero, even though she is a strong woman and does not need me at all.”
Heero snorted and looked at him. “You would be surprised.”
Duo cocked an eyebrow at him, “Eh?”
“Hn.” Heero stuck out his hand, and Duo clasped it with his.
“When you are done, And you brought the wood to the house, Grab a bucket and go to the creek, we have to fill the cistern. “
Duo nodded and handed the cup back to Heero to continued splitting the logs. Heero took the cup and returned to the house, Knowing the day would long and full of hard work. They only had a few hours of day light left.
