Al and Klause welcomed me with open arms. All I wanted to do was lie on the couch and think for awhile. Russell sat on the other end of the couch and talked with them, telling them about Fletcher’s progress in alchemy and how they were making a life for themselves in The Crossing. I sat there, catatonic. I had no thoughts in my head, no emotions, nothing.
“Ed. Ed? Edward?” I raised my head and looked at the cup of coffee that Klause was offering to me. I nodded and took it from her, taking a sip. The liquid warmed me and reminded me that at the very least, I was still alive. Klause nudged my leg so I scooted over, but refused to meet her eyes.
I sighed. I knew what was coming.
“Has he been called?”
“Yes.” Al confirmed my greatest fear.
I swallowed a lump in my throat. “Is he coming over here?”
“No. We are going over there. He wants you to meet him in 30 minutes.” My heart dropped to my knees. I wasn’t prepared to fight this battle on my own turf. Not yet.
I drank the rest of the coffee and gave a deep sigh. Klause and Russell were already standing and putting on their jackets. All of us silently walked down the road to the home where Roy and I shared. Each step I took became heavier and heavier and I thought I would collapse from the pressure. When we reached the apartment, I inhaled deeply and tried to clear my mind. I knew this wouldn’t be easy.
************
Roy was so patient. He sat there, hands clasped together, and listened without interruptions about the stories of Izumi, how she treated Al and myself, how afraid I was to cut my ties with her. He nodded attentively, seemingly engrossed in the story. I decided to leave out the part with Kimblee…no need to add insult to injury.
‘Please…understand…’
“So is this really the reason why you have been acting so strangely?” Roy’s piercing blue eyes hit me and I was overwhelmed with sadness.
All I could do is nod.
Roy nodded back and turned toward the window. I noticed the corner of his eye was quickly turning shiny and ran over to him.
“It had nothing to do with you. Please, please trust me,” I begged when he pulled away from me. He turned red wet eyes to me and slapped me hard across the face, mussing my braid.
“Trust me, Roy. I’ll never hurt you,” he mimicked sarcastically, glaring at me. He grabbed my ponytail and pulled me toward him, my nose touching his chin. He murmured something intelligible and then roughly shoved me toward the floor.
Klause stood. “Roy, that isn’t fair. This was happening while you off in Ishbal murdering Winry’s parents. So lets get off of our high horses, alright?”
Roy’s face colored at the insult. “Really, Klause? You want to take it there? Let’s see…why is your sister dead again?”
Klause paused. “That’s fucked up, Roy.” She glared at him and shook her head in disbelief.
Roy smirked. “At least I can own being responsible for the deaths of the Rockbells. They died by my hand, but not because I wanted them to. Similar to your situation, isn’t it?”
Russell stood and put an arm around the wilting Klause. “Dude, that’s not fair. This isn’t what we are here for. But I forgot you dogs of the military love to go for the jugular, eh?” Russell gave Roy a nasty look and pulled Klause to sit down.
Roy shrugged and looked down at me. “One good turn deserves another.” He walked down the hall and we heard movement and drawers opening and closing. A few moments later he emerged with a suitcase and made a beeline for the door.
“What are you doing?!” I cried, crawling and stretching my arms in front of the door trying to block him.
“Move, Ed.” The voice was flat and deadpan.
“No.” My voice mirrored his.
“No? No? NO?!!” Roy screamed, throwing his suitcase in the living room. He grabbed my neck and lifted me as far as he could off the floor. “I should snap your worthless neck like a twig!” He roared, nose to nose with me. I managed to place my auto mail arm in front of me and push him away.
“I know you hate me-”
“I don’t like you enough to hate you, Elric.” Roy’s eyes blazed with fire.
‘Sigh. He could be such a bitch.’
“I know. But I need your help to handle Izumi.”
“You don’t think you have handled her enough?!”
I shook my head. “Stop this, Roy. I love you. Despite what you think.”
Roy’s face distorted. “Yeah. You love me so much that you fucked my ex. Pura vida, Edward.”
He laughed at my confused face. “Oh, you must want to know how I found out. He called me to gloat. He described the mole on your inner thigh. I didn’t believe it though until your face just now. So you have cheated on me with 2 people…are there any more? Wanna have a go at Hughes, he’s like a brother to me. Or maybe you want to fuck Riza, since we’re close too. Better yet, why don’t I just remove my tangible heart and give it to you in a jar?!”
I was shaking from my tears. “Please…let me explain…Roy…”
He shook his head. “You had the chance to explain and you didn’t. There is nothing further to explain. I have to leave. The sight of you sickens me.” He nodded toward the ‘guests’ and grabbed his suitcase, walking out. I turned to watch him go, and when he closed the door, I fell to my knees, sobbing.
************
I glared at myself in the bathroom mirror, disgusted. It had been approximately three hours and twenty four minutes since Roy walked out on me. I sneered at the simpering fool that sneered back in the mirror. My eyes were puffy and my face was as red as my overcoat. Angry red turning purple welts were on my neck and face where Roy had struck me. I looked horrible.
‘Damn, he did a number on me!‘
I studied my face, frowning at the coloring marks. I ran some cold water and splashed my face, trying to bring myself back. I sat on the lid of the toilet thinking.
‘Plotting.‘
“Ed?” Klause’s voice came through the door.
“What.”
“Are you killing yourself?”
I chuckled. Damn Klause. I opened the door and smiled as widely as I could. “Nah. But I know some people we can go kill.”
Klause opened her mouth to respond, but the phone rang. We heard Russell talking, and then saw him come around the corner.
“It’s Roy.” He offered me the phone. My chin quivered, but a nod from Klause gave me some strength.
“Come meet me. Hughes isn’t here. You have twenty minutes to get here. If it takes you longer than that, don’t even fucking bother.” The line went dead, but the husky timbre of Roy’s voice resonated and the tightness in his throat made me gulp and I had a fluttering sensation in my stomach.
“What did he say?!!” Russell demanded, obviously unnerved by my flushed face. I shrugged.
“I gotta go. I’ll be back, I promise.” I briefly hugged them both. I looked at my pocket watch. Nineteen minutes. I grabbed the keys to my Lincoln and ran like hell out the door. Even rushing, it usually takes thirty minutes to get to Hughes’s house. Even thought I didn’t believe in God, I prayed that he would hold traffic and police at bay until I could get to Roy.
