Scene Nine
"Here we are kid." Seripa walked into the room with En behind her, who eyed the environment warily, but not as intense as before after a huge feed. She saw that there were not only Bardock in the room, but another youngish Saiyan man as well, with a black mullet except the hair was not curly at the top and the ponytail was tied rather low instead of up high.
"So Bardock, what can we do with her? She can't fight, but she can definitely eat."
"She'll be up in the battlefield in no time, we just gotta train her." Said Bardock as he walked towards En and gave her a good look, which En found a bit annoying and looked back at him defensively, saviour or not she was starting to get annoyed with being treated like a weird mongrel. Bardock just chuckled at her stare down (in this case, a stare up really,) and picked her up despite her half-attempted protest.
Seripa walked towards Toma, the Saiyan with the mullet. "You would not believe how much of a galactical bumpkin she is Toma, I seriously can't imagine her being shot out of here in a space pod, she'd probably try to get out before it launches."
"So it is true then Bardock, " said Toma, "I know that we all started while we were young, but if this doesn't work then our team would be let down, and I'll be darned if I have to face that prick Purika again!"
Bardock ignored his teammate's whining and continued on inspecting En with great interest.
"I had no idea you have such big eyes, and that hair, you're going to do really well in battles I can tell." He said as he tossed her up into the air and caught her again, and looked into her now even more annoyed eyes. He then grabbed her by the left foot and dangled her. En then furiously whacked her tail across only to have him easily dodge it. Feeling her anger spill over, En joined her palms together to face outwards and blasted a small energy blast directly to Bardock's face, only as she did it she felt her right shoulder hit the floor painfully. That asshole dropped me! She thought angrily to herself as she quickly sat up and crouched, then saw a laughing Bardock standing away from where the blast should have hit, as a pair of astonished Toma and Seripa looked gawkishly at the now damaged wall, smoke uprising with chunks of it falling off, leaving a hole the size of a large cake pan.
"Haha! You were saying?" Said Bardock as he eyed them both. En sprinted and leapt towards Bardock and shot another blast at him, only to have Bardock grab it as if it were a soft, squishy ball as she looked on with shock to see it slowly being crushed out of his palm, the emitting rays escaping from the action. Before she realised it, He charged at her like a bull and En could not dodge in time, in amidst of panicking she tripped and landed on her back. She heard the floor crush next to her left ear when he punched a small crater into the surface, sending broken pieces flying up and landing on her face and the rest of the body. She tried to move but failed because her legs by then may as well have been jellified, she stared back at Bardock in horror, it was as if he was back in that cafeteria again, his eyes showing no hint of forgiveness but battle lust, his mouth crooked into a crazed smile.
He slowly moved his fist up from the crater and brought it close to En's nose, who did not dare to move despite how terrified she was.
"You see this? This will be your new weapon, energy blasts don't do you no good in close combats." He spoke with lowered volume, the resonance of his deep, husky voice travelled down En's spine and back, as she continued to be trapped in his dark, merciless eyes, not realising that he had his other hand moving slowly but steadily before snatching her tail and crushing it as if it were a paper-mache. The sickening crunch of the bones in her tail invaded her ears as she screamed out in sharp pain. The impact was so deadly that she balled up like a millipede and dug her nails into her spandex-clad arms, rocking back and forth as she continued to wail. Bardock still kept a tight grip on her tail, unaffected, he added more force to his vice grip to elicit more sharp shrills from En, reducing her to a ridiculous squeeze toy. En had her eyes tightly closed but all she could see were bright, white sparks exploding everywhere in the dark and had finally reduced to primitive and pathetic thrashing like an insect with their limbs pulled off. Bardock remained unmoved still, and kept a tight hold on her tail to prevent her from getting away, not that she was able to in that state.
When she could no longer cry and thrash, but heave dry sobs, he finally loosened the grip on her tail, not fully letting go still, he crouched down lower, his face above hers in a distance that was too close for comfort, as he let out the words slowly.
"Never use your tail in a combat, never flaunt it, never let loose of it, always keep it wound tightly around your waist." He then placed her now tattered tail beside her as if it were a piece of rag, then stood up to make his way to the door. When he got to the door, he stopped and asked.
"What's your name again kid?"
Dared not to disobey as she looked up, En held down her dry sobbing as best as she could before answering.
"It's En, .... sir...."
"Your real training starts tomorrow, we have a week before we get deployed for mission. Get rested tonight. Toma, Seripa, the same goes to you too. We will meet here tomorrow at 0500." Said Bardock.
After receiving conforming knods from Toma and Seripa, he exited through the door.
En did not notice how silent the room was until she finally stopped sobbing, she sat up slowly as best as she could to not affect her tail to see Toma and Seripa both looking at the door, Bardock's presence still weighed heavily in the room.
Toma was the first one to speak.
"Great, now we have to repair this room, you'd think Bardock would think twice before having to ask the budgeting department to fix it again, that guy never thinks of anyone else but himself."
"Shush! No one's asking you to plaster anything. Toma, go back to your dorm. En, come here, let me put a cast on your tail." Said Seripa as she turned towards the drawers and pulled out a small treatment box.
En limped towards Seripa, her legs slowly regaining power as she held her now defunct tail gingerly in her palms. She could feel Toma's suspicious gaze on her as he exited. Feeling relieved that they were alone, En let out a huge sigh.
"Hold your tail up for me like this, and keep it still, now hold your breath kiddo this is going to hurt." Said Seripa as she began to tear wet strips of tape and with one hand supporting En's tail, she gingerly but efficiently locked the broken bones back in place before fixing them with wet strips of tape. En winced with every minimal pressure applied to the fractured appendage, but she would rather let Seripa do it rather than the others Saiyans, certainly not Bardock now. En wished that it was all it needed, but Seripa then pulled out a thin-skinned bag which became very stretchy after stretching it, then pulled it over her tail, making sure it fitted snugly. En tried to distract herself by counting the number vertical seams on the walls across the room, by the time she got to 865 Seripa had finally put the final layer of fibreglass cast.
"All done, let's head to our dorm now." Said Seripa as she put the equipments away in the box and replaced it in the respective drawer. En stood up, feeling the plastered tail weighing itself down, it felt awkward to move without her tail being the efficient balancing point. She tried to lift it up enough so it would at least be at the centre axis of her body, before following Seripa out of the door.
Her mind was blank as they walked, but as soon as they entered the dormitory, En asked Seripa.
"Why did he do that to me?"
"Huh?"
"If I really meant so much to him that he would fight for me, why did he do that to me?" Persisted En, she looked up at Seripa with her big eyes.
Seripa looked back at the pint-sized rookie for a while, then picked her up and chucked her on the top bunk, which was a bed made from the hollowed out space on the wall, with the pillow, sheets, blanket and mattress. En was caught up in the moment of being picked up, but then felt absolutely amazed at, to her, how soft the bedware was and she could not help but snuggle up to her pillow and roll up into a big, cushy cocoon in the blanket, until her tail accidentally knocked on the side of the wall and she winced and stopped her frolicking. Seripa tried to hold back a laugh, as she spoke.
"You were saying?"
"I, uh... well, why did he hurt me?" Said En, still smooshing the pillow below her, the persistence in her tone not as strong anymore.
"Tell me something En, where did you live before coming here?"
"I lived at an abandoned sand hutt with other rogues, we kept to ourselves 'cause on most nights people die from fighting each other over food."
"Is that why you never learned how to fight?"
"No, I just learned how to run."
"Would you ever go back there again?"
En shook her head violently with recollected fear in her eyes.
"Tell me En, who would you rather face again, Bardock or the people you lived with?"
En was about to speak but then stopped, she cocked her head to the side for a moment and thought for a while, before answering.
"Bardock."
"Why Bardock?"
"Because people back there, they would've killed me for whatever reason, maybe they wanted to, maybe for food, looking at them the wrong way, anything, I don't get why Bardock did that to me, but somehow I know that he'll never kill me, no matter what."
"And why do you think that is En?"
"... I really don't know."
Seripa leaned closer to her and ran her fingers through En's fluffy hair.
"Because if it were the real battle, you would've died as soon as your tail gets grabbed. The enemy would not wait around for you to get weak, the second they get your tail is the second you die, either through loss of blood or hitting vital organs, anything. And that, is worse than having your tail broken."
Seeing that En was quiet from the answer, Seripa continued on.
"You're a trooper now En, maybe a rookie trooper but a trooper nonetheless. Bardock never lay his eyes on anyone unless if he thinks they're worth his time, and the last thing he wants for you is to die in battle."
En looked back at Seripa as she tried to absorb what she said, this life changing thing all happening in one day, a part of her was still wondering that maybe she hit her head while at work and this was all just a subconscious hallucination during a coma.
"If there's anything that separates Bardock from these idiots in the cafeteria and the people you lived with, is that Bardock never lands a fist on anyone without a reason, you can always be sure of that."
En knodded as she clutched the blanket, the softness embracing her has started to encourage her tightly-wound up body to relax and she could feel her eyelids getting heavier.
"Alright kid we have an early start tomorrow, and let me warn you I'm a grumpy sleeper so don't let me catch you bouncing on your bed." Said Seripa as she retreated to the bottom bunk and clapped twice to switch the lights off.
En remained in the original position in the dark, her eyes still open, before she slid back and lie on her back, pulling the blankets over her. She did not know how to position herself for she had no recollection of ever sleeping properly like this in a real bed before, all she knew was that she loved the softness that surrounded her and curled up like a hedgehog. It was not long before she drifted off to sleep and all you could hear in the room was two quiet breathing sound interlacing each other at different intervals.
