I’m so tired of being here
suppressed by all of my childish fears
and if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
because your presence still lingers here
and it won\'t leave me alone

Wufei sat at Duo’s bedside. His head hung low and his long fingered hands wrapped securely around the other boy’s limp ones. The once vibrant boy lay still and silent on the bed, his skin gone from ivory to nearly translucent. It was almost as if that, though the body remained, the spirit was already gone.

One tear, then another fell onto that pale hand and Wufei’s head drooped farther. //So few years together, koishii. It wasn’t enough! Come back to me, Duo. Please. Come back to me…//

The tears fell faster now. They gathered and ran down the silent shell that had once been the man whom Wufei loved above all others. And, as they fell, Wufei remembered, just as he always did.

These wounds won\'t seem to heal
this pain is just too real
there\'s just too much that time cannot erase

Duo laughed lightheartedly. “Come on, Fei! There’s a great fair going on downtown!”

Wufei looked up from his book with little enthusiasm and much irritation. “What possible reason could I have for going there? All of those people pressing in, screaming children, and the parents who don’t watch them.”

Duo looked slightly crestfallen for a moment, then brightened again. “It’ll be fun, Fei!” He pulled at his lover’s arm.

Wufei stubbornly remained in the chair. “I’m not going.” He gave a credible imitation of Heero’s death glare to reinforce his statement, and turned his attention back to his book. In doing so he missed the very evil grin that passed over Duo’s angelic features.

Duo sighed and dropped Wufei’s arm. “Well alright.” He managed to sound sad. “Maybe I can find someone there who will play with me.”

Wufei’s book was on the floor and he was pulling Duo toward the door before the braided boy could do more than blink. “Come on, Duo! We’re going to miss something!!”

The door slammed closed on Duo’s delighted laughter.

//Oh Duo…//

When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears
when you\'d scream I’d fight away all of your fears
and I’ve held your hand through all of these years
but you still have all of me

Duo woke late into the night. His panicked screams echoed off the walls, and he lashed out at invisible attackers. Wufei, knowing that he would ache tomorrow, nonetheless gathered his lover close to his body.

Duo kicked and screamed louder. Deeply buried terror held him caught in the throes of a nightmare and each blow that he threw at his phantom attacker rained down on a stoic Wufei.

Wufei held him closer. He took each punch and kick with calm serenity. He just kept whispering sweet endearments to his frightened lover. He reassured Duo that he was there, that he had nothing to fear. Over and over he told the boy that it was all just a dream and all he had to do was open his beautiful eyes, and Wufei would be there.

Finally Duo calmed. He lay panting against Wufei’s shoulder. Then, after another long moment, he opened his eyes. He reached up to gently caress the deep scratches that he’d left across Wufei’s chest before his fingers drifted upward to hover over the black eye.

“Oh, Fei. I’m so sorry.”

Wufei watched tears fill those lovely violet eyes and he gathered Duo closer to his heart. His own voice was choked when he replied, “No, darling. Do not be sorry for something that you could not control.”

Sobs wracked Duo’s slender body and Wufei hugged him even closer, melding their bodies together from head to toe. “It’ll be alright, itoshii. Nothing will ever hurt you while I am here. Ai shiteru, Duo. It’s alright…”

Wufei’s reassurances continued deep into the night, while he cradled Duo tenderly in his arms and rocked him gently back into a deep, dreamless sleep.

You used to captivate me
by your resonating light
but now I’m bound by the life you left behind
your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
your voice it chased away all the sanity in me

Wufei drifted off. In his dreams he ran down the sands of the desert with Duo again, as they had on their many visits to Quatre. They swam in the ocean and laughed with Heero and Relena. They gasped in fearful excitement as they watched Catherine hurl daggers at Trowa. He ran his hands across perfect skin and gasped when Duo returned the favor. In his dreams they moved together in perfect harmony until they reached completion.

Duo’s voice echoed through his mind. Each nuance of sound, every ring of breathless laughter, the pleasure filled moans of their lovemaking. And for that short moment Wufei was happy again. He carefully lowered himself to the bed beside his still lover. He wrapped his warm body around Duo’s cold one and snuggled down next to him, pretending that he would wake and respond any second.

These wounds won\'t seem to heal
this pain is just too real
there\'s just too much that time cannot erase

The monitors shrilled into the silence. Doctors and nurses ran into the room, and Wufei found himself pushed back into the far corner of the room, forced to watch with disbelieving eyes as they tried to resuscitate Duo.

Minutes passed. Each second seemed like hours to the Chinese boy and slowly, in an effort to preserve his sanity, he drifted back into the comfort of the memories.

When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears
when you\'d scream I’d fight away all of your fears
and I’ve held your hand through all of these years
but you still have all of me

Duo looked up from his rather badly fallen soufflé. Tears glistened once more in his eyes, lending them an extra sparkle. “I’m sorry, Fei.”

Wufei couldn’t help but smile. “It’s alright, Duo. Well just go out for dinner, s we? we?”

Duo’s lips trembled. “But I wanted to make you something special for our anniversary!”

Wufei gathered the slender form close to him. “You don’t have to cook for me, Duo. I love you for you, not for your culinary abilities. Or lack there of.” He softly brushed the tears from Duo’s cheeks, and the boy looked up at him hopefully.

“Honto ni?” He whispered.

Wufei’s smile widened. “Hai. Honto ni. Ai shiteru, Duo Maxwell-Chang.”

Duo
Duo laughed weakly and tumbled onto his lover, knocking him to the floor. The braided boy ended up on top, and he sat gazing down at Wufei with wondering eyes. “Ai shiteru, Chang Wufei. Don’t you ever forget that, and don’t you ever, ever leave me!”

Wufei pulled Duo down to claim his full lips in a tender kiss. “I won’t.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Duo grinned. “Good!” He laughed wickedly. “Now why don’t you show me how much you love me??”

I’ve tried so hard to tell myself that you\'re gone
and though you\'re still with me
I’ve been alone all along

The doctor looked back at Wufei. “I’m sorry, Mr. Chang.”

Wufei just stared at uncomprehendingly at the doctor, who decided to try again. “He’s gone. There’s nothing more we can do.”

“No.” Wufei whispered. “He’s not gone. He isn’t. Death can’t die.” The whisper turned to a scream. “YOU CAN’T DIE!!!”

The doctor turned away from the sight of Wufei clutching Duo’s cooling, still form to his chest, rocking his dead lover back and forth as he sobbed.
