mechanical Love

Love was a mechanical thing for Niomi Jessica Maxwell. It was something only idiots would fall for. She hated love just as much as she hated weaklings. She hated everything that had to do with Oz, she hated the world if it came down to it. But she still had her barriers broken, her walls and security torn down. She fell in love, took a bullet for him and layed on a steel hospital bed with a sheet pulled over her head. As fast as she met the world, she saved it and died for it.

The first time they saw her was during a flight to earth making her way back from first class with her chin held high in her black leather coat and pilot suit underneath. She bumped into Wufei Chang on his way back from the bathroom. She walked on without comment or eye contact. He demaned an apology. She glared at him with sheer violet eyes. For a reason beyond any, she apologized in Chinese. They talked more.

The second time they saw her was on Earth. She was working rebuilding a chinese village after a bomb was dropped on it. She welcomed them with open arms, beckoned them to stay. Duo and Heero felt relaxed for the first time in years. Trowa and Quatre explored a more “intimate” way of feelings after exposing them. Although it was obvious, Neither Niomi nor Wufei expoed their true feelings for each other.

The third time the heard of her, was on a list of MIA pilots posted over the intercom on Preventors. She never worked there, or wanted to. She was neither a enemy or an allie. The previous day, she took a bullet to the chest jumping infront of Wufei without any form of body protection after an Oz pilot broke loose from his cell, all because she loved him. The explosion was of an Oz military fleet stating an invasion on a neutral colony. It was stated that she went in to save them, and was never heard of afterwards. There were no survivors.

The last time they saw her, she was in a hospital bed with moniters hooked to her body. Every breath for her was a struggle. They left Wufei alone with her. He could only watch her shattered chest rise and fall. He went to her bed, taking her hand In his.
“Niomi-chan…”
Her eyes slowly opened, sheer violet meeting onyx. A smile flittered over her lips.
‘F-ei..’
He hushed her quietly.
“Don’t talk, you’ll make it worse..”
Her laugh. The laugh that showed no pain, no fear to her death. The sheer violet eyes closed for a moment, then re-opened. Her hand closed over his tightly with the last strength her body could muster.
‘Come closer.. please.. don’t leave me..’
He climbed onto the bed, laying down beside her, resting an arm over her stomach and the other above his head. A shutterd breath before she spoke. Her fingers drifted over his neck, finding the elastic band that kept his beauty hidden.
‘Tell me.. what is it you.. want in life..’
Wufei gazed at her with a sense of shock in his dark eyes before he closed them and lay his head down next to hers.
“I want peace throught the colonies.. just once for them to stop fighting and watch the sun rising over the earth.”
Her head turned so that their faces were only centimeters apart.
‘I lay here dying.. with the man I love.. yet my soul.. is not at peace..but I do not wish for anything more.. but it will be as you wish..’
His lips brushed hers in a question only she knew the answer to. Her own lips followed, tracing a path over the bronze skin of his neck to his collarbone. Her body convulsed, a sharp painful swear in chinese slipping past her lips. She burried her face in his shoulder groaning into the cotton shirt.
‘Niomi..’
Her breaths were laboured, straining for air.
“Niomi!”
Her body convolsed a final time before stilling, the small puffs of air tickling his neck. He couldn’t control the tears.
‘I… love… you..’
There were no more. Sobbing he pulled her against his body burying his face into her neck and cried words only she would know. He finally quieted, onyx eyes gazing blurred into the cotton linen sheets.
‘I love you too..’

The ceremony was held on earth. True to her words the fighting stopped when the sun rose over the earth the morning after her final breath was taken. Her final wish was to be cremated and have half her ashes thrown into the wind at her home village in China. The other half was used to plant an apple tree in the middle of the village along side a statue in memory of her. All seven of the pilots that day scattered her ashes and burried them with a new twinge of hope. Niomi Jessica Maxwell was gone, but not forgotten living in the hearts of all.

~~~ End Comission ****
Her statue still stands, over looked by the apple tree once a sapling. A rosebush bloomed over the base of the statue covering her body in tiny crimson blossoms. He still visits the village, now a bustling town. Once a boy, now a man, kneeling infront of the statue trying not to cry. He’ll sometimes see her leaning against it, or hear her ringing laugh in the wind. He still believes she will return one day, when the sun rises over the earth.
