Prologue

Obsidian black eyes gazed up at the waning moon in silent contemplation. Pan raised the wineglass to her lips and drained the last of the brandy, closing her eyes as the liquor burned its way down her throat before settling into the pits of her stomach. Her eyes opened once more and landed on silver-framed photo that resided on the lamp table by her bed.

A bittersweet smile touched her lips as she picked up the silver frame and stared down at picture of herself and her best friends. Bulma had taken the picture ten years ago, on the day before Trunks had left for college, when the group had gathered together for one last day of fun before the summer ended.

Located on the left side of the picture was Bra, who was choking Goten for some stupid comment that he had made which she could no longer remember. Marron and Uub were sitting on the ground in front of the others, their backs against each other, grinning at the camera as Marron made the victory sign. And to the right side, stood Trunks with her riding on his back piggy back style, one arm slung around his neck while she used her other hand to make bunny ears behind his head.

It had been the last time that they had all been together.

\"Those days are over, Pan,\" she whispered as she carefully placed the frame back the lamp table. She then grabbed the bottle of brandy and filled her glass to rim before taking a long sip.

Everything had changed when Trunks had left for collage in America.

\"Damn you, Trunks,\" she swore, turning to the picture and glaring at the lavender-haired man\'s smiling face.

Maybe she was being slightly unfair since most of the changes hadn\'t been his doing, but maybe if he had been here then...

Maybe Goten and Uub would have never been as stupid as to fall for Paris, that conniving bitch who toyed with the hearts of two of the sweetest guys that she knew and caused the best of friends to become bitter rivals that couldn\'t even stand to be in the same room with each other.

And maybe Goten and Uub wouldn\'t have spent the past twenty something years with blindfolds on their eyes and realized that their soulmates had always been with them from the beginning.

And maybe, just maybe, she could have continued going on through life, regarding Trunks as her best friend, and not as the man who could cause butterflies to fly rampant in her stomach just by thinking about him. The man who had the ability to make her forget how to breathe and cause her heart to do cartwheels by whispering a platonic little \"I love you\" at the end of their weekly conversations. The man who was her closest confidant, her advisor, her soul... her love.

Love was a wonderful thing, but it could be a real bitch too. Loving Trunks filled her with an unadulterated joy, but it also hurt worse then a sparring match with Vegeta when he was in the doghouse with Bulma. Nothing hurt more then going to the store and seeing Trunks\'s face plastered on a tabloid with another woman. But what could she do? She was just the best friend, not his mate.

But at least during these past ten years, she hadn\'t been able to see him often due to the fact that he had been busy getting his doctorate in business and then later because he had been working hard to establish a branch of Capsule Corps in New York. In those few visits that he had managed, she had discovered that her pain was increased by tenfold, because instead of reading about his lady-loves, she got to meet them.

She deserved an Oscar for the performances she had made in those visits when she had to pretend to like those gold-digging bitches that clamored around Trunks and hide the fact that she would have liked nothing more then to blow them to oblivion. But she couldn\'t do that. She was Trunks\'s best friend, who had absolutely no romantic-type feelings for the 6\'2\" sex god.

Sometimes during these visits, Trunks would look at her strangely and she would panic, thinking that he had heard the soft caress in her voice when she said his name or seen the love that shined in her eyes that she tried so hard to conceal from him. But he never said anything.

And now that the branch in New York had been firmly established, Trunks was relinquishing his job as president of that branch to return home and take over running all of Capsule Corps. By tomorrow afternoon, Trunks would be in Japan. How was she going to be able to pretend day after day that nothing had changed? There was no way she could avoid him for any long strech of time, not when he was her boss and best friend.

Oh sure, she could tell him how she felt, but if he didn\'t feel the same way... Wasn\'t it better to just accept the brotherly affection that she got then face the rejection and pity if she told him if he didn\'t feel the same way? Besides, she was certain that if Trunks had ever felt something more then frienship towards her, then he would have found some way by now to let her know.

Holding her wineglass in the air, she stared at its contents thoughtfully. \"Hmph. Maybe I should just quit working at C.C. and become an actress since I obviously seem to have a talent for it,\" she mused aloud as she brought the glass up to her lips and swallowed its entire contents in one gulp.
