Untamed Shadows

Chapter 1

He sat in a chair by the window. He had been thinking and sitting for three days in the same chair. The military had begun to weigh him down along with all the travel involved. Mustang had been riding his back for the previous eight years about the Philosopher’s Stone since he hadn't been able to locate one without the loss of a civilization to create it. The more he thought about it the more he realized that all his years of research had taken him nowhere. He wasn’t any closer to creating the stone than he was the first day that he had started his research. It had been a great disappointment when he had read Marco’s notes and found the secret to making the Stone. For that purpose Al was still enshrouded in his metal prison without hope of a reprieve any time soon. Admittedly he was somewhat happier after meeting Mei. Even without his body she made him considerably happy to still be alive.

Al was off sulking on another one of his ‘I wanna know if I’m a real person’ bouts. He had been gone for almost a month now without calling to check in. Reenlistment was in a few days, and the option of leaving the military was a rather enticing thought that he was all too tempted to entertain. The only thing he wanted right now was to go home. The house they had burned down was now rebuilt, with a lot of changes made. In all actuality the only thing that was still the same about it was the land it was on. It had been built for a vacation or someday a getaway; which was exactly what he needed at the moment. A getaway from the stress of Military life. If he was lucky he might even find Al there, but the chances were slim.

It had been almost four years since he had last seen Winry and Pinako. He had taken care of his own automail a lot more the older he got. It was an inconvenience to have to be fixed after every assignment when someone got too rough fighting him to get away from the famous State Alchemist Fullmetal. The automail was a lot less of an inconvenience since he had stopped growing. His growth spurt had hit him full force at the late age of eighteen. He still didn’t get as tall as he wanted to but it was going to have to be enough. He still got shrimpy comments any time he stood next to Al, but in comparison to his brother most people would understand.

He let a smile play across his face while he stood to pack his clothes. He wouldn't need much. A few black pants and a few black shirts. A trip was definitely gonna be just what the doctor ordered. Maybe he would even get lucky and Riza wouldn't be guarding Mustang like a hawk; like normal. A little time with him would definitely have to be suffered through if he wanted to leave Central. It wasn’t everyday that you have to go through the Furer to leave, but since he was thinking about not reenlisting the conversation would definitely be a must if he didn’t want to be tracked like a ‘dog’ of the military again. He put all worries about Al aside as he got up from his chair and headed for the door, and to the task at hand.

Later in the Furer’s Office

“Afternoon Riza. Is he in today?”

Ed was never happy to be in this particular office, but unlike normal there shouldn't be any screaming and arguments this time. It had taken them years to find out about the conspiracy within the military. Homunculi. Who could have dreamed that they would have been real. The thing that hindered them the most was knowing that there was a homunculi that was apparently modeled after his and Al's Mother. She had been the most difficult to eliminate.

“I’m not supposed to let anyone in to see him Ed" stated Riza calmly.
Everyone knew Riza would watch over Mustang until the day she died, but she would surely give in for a conference for a few minutes. “I just need to tell him that I wanna leave for Risembool Riza”.

“Go ahead then. I think he’s asleep anyway. You know how he is when it's peaceful around here.” Riza was warm hearted as she showed him into the large office that had been given to Mustang when he had become Furer some three years ago. It was a quiet and secluded office and he was willing to bet that Riza's ass had graced his polished desk more than a few times since the move, but no one was willing to call them on it.

Ed looked around for some kind of sign of the dark head of hair that he searched for, but no sign was to be found until he caught sight of him in the corner seated in a chair burning paper. I assume being the Flame Alchemist would have its perks when you need to dispose of paper documents in a hurry.

“You must be really bored Furer Mustang” he quipped lightly. "I hope that wasn't your birth certificate you just fried in a hurry. I'd hate to see you run off to join the circus without documents to show you've had your shots."

“Ed, to what do I owe the pleasure of a visit from you. Tell me you aren’t in trouble again and I might let you off this time without setting you on fire with these old files.” Mustang was slouched in his chair in the corner staring at his glove, and the burning trash can in front of his feet. Boredom clearly marked his face as he looked up at Ed.

“No, actually I wanted to talk to you before I leave. I wanna go home and see everyone for a little while. I thought it would go a lot easier if I came and let you know first. I don't wanna be hunted while I'm gone to Risembool. ”

Mustang sat up in his chair seemingly amused. “And why would you come to see me before your departure? You've never been one to conform to anything I want. Why start now. It might have actually given me something to do other than be in this office all day if I could have chased you around a while.”

“I'm thinking about not reenlisting next week, and I know you well enough to know you'll have some smart assed comment to say about it. Honestly though I really don't wanna hear it.”

"It would be a shame for you to give up that nice reputation you spent all this time building don't you think. Besides I had been thinking of making you a military consultant since you finally passed the age of puberty. Hell you might even be as tall as Al's shoulder now" Roy mussed.
"Enough with the short comments already!" Ed shrieked.

"How about I delay your renelistment for a few weeks while you go home and you can think about the consultant position. It means a lot less travel and the loss of a lot of your budget for research, but maybe thats not a concern of yours at the moment. Let me know what you think. I'll have Riza call you sometime after you make it home."

"Arrogant as always" Ed muttered.
Roy looked up again. "Did you say something?"

"Nothing important" he muttered again and he left the office.

Surprisingly it went rather well and without too much irritation. Not too much of the boring lecture that he had thought he was in for, but he was well on his way home once he could pack his clothes and get on a train. Maybe after he had been home for a couple of weeks he would head to Xing for a few weeks of vacation.

**************************************************

Al had set up camp for the night, if you could call it a camp. He didn’t need food or a fire for that matter. He was bored with traveling and leaning aginst a wall. He had come to Lior to see Rose and her child. ‘This is one place brother won’t look for me’ he thought to himself. He settled himself against a ruin of a wall that had been left by the Military during the socalled uprising they had had after the loss of their Prophet Cornello.

His trip wasn’t all that bad, except for the sand that kept filling his body. Rose’s village had occupied the entire valley at one time, but now, now they only had a corner of the village that the people of Lior once knew. It was a sad fate that befell the people of Lior when the Military came through. Al had been making use of his alchemy helping Rose's people regain some of their houses while he was in residence. It was only fair since he felt like Ed and him should have done more for the people here when they discredited Cornello. The people were building every day, and the town was growing from the dispair that had come with the military.

The thugs from surrounding areas wouldn’t stop coming, and Scar could only handle so much on his own. Scar’s attempt to create the Sacred Philosopher’s Stone with the Military personnel had faltered somewhere. So, Al resorted to lending a hand where he felt needed the most, and that was rebulding houses. Ed had challenged Cornello for the Philosopher’s Stone, and even though it was a fake the town never recoiled from the major ego blow. Cornello was now gone and the people of Lior suffered that loss. It was getting better by the day, and some remarks had been made that they were sending a State Alchemist to take over the major reconstruction of the town. Al mussed to himself for a while that if they were serious about that then they should send his brother here and let him rebuild the city. It probably wouldn't take him more than five minutes considering the advancement of his skills in alchemy. They had done a good job helping in Youswell with the mines.

So, Al was currently hiding. He had given up all hope of ever getting returned to his body after the death of Wrath. There was only a small part of him that was sorry to see the once innocent child’s demise, but no one was going to steal from his brother and live. It was then that they discovered that Ed was going to have to make due with his automail.
