Surviving Death
Alright people, this is my first GW fic. I've been toying with this idea for a while and decided to get it all down at last.
Pairings: 1/OC, 1/5, 3/4, 2/5 Most of them don't show until later.

The world ended on the most conspicuous day of the year.
On June 6th, 2006, Earth erupted into nuclear war.
No one knows who started it. But suddenly, Russia was bombing the USA, and the USA was retaliating. Germany obliterated France, but not before France sunk England. Even South America and Australia were throwing nukes at each other. None of the citizens knew what was going on because television and radio airwaves were filled with static. Electricity was failing across the globe.
They say God created Life in seven days. Humanity ruined it in three.
World War III lasted only three days, but Earth was scarred beyond repair. Europe became a mass of scattered, frozen islands near Northern Canada. Japan was swallowed by a tectonic shift. Mexico was transformed a wasteland of frozen sand. Russia split in two, and the halves re-collided, creating a stripe of mountains down the center. South America and Australia became part of Antarctica. Canada split from the United States and drifted into the Arctic Circle. The USA lost thousands of miles of shoreline to the oceans and shifted up beside Russia, where Europe had been.
There was no sun. The sky became dark with thick gray clouds. World wide temperatures dropped below Zero. Snow fell occasionally, in light gray puffs. Harsh winds blew constantly, flattening the land until it was nearly all tundra. The tropics were no more. Nearly all plant life died, leaving only the hardiest of evergreens. Animals became extinct in a matter of weeks. The only birds that survived were scavengers. Bugs no longer existed. Most fish couldn’t survive in the rough ocean waters, and fresh water lakes were scarce.
WWIII had created Nuclear Winter.
Economy was ruined. Entire countries were destroyed or became uninhabitable. Billions of people were dead or dieing because of the nuclear radiation, and even more would perish from the new climate. There was no electricity, no heat, no light. And being the most intact country, Russia was making plans for an Empire.
For years, thing just got worse. Humanity was reverting back to the Middle Ages. Living conditions were becoming awful. People only lived to 50 years old. Many children didn’t live long enough to hit puberty. The generation that knew about electricity and technology was dieing out, and the new generation couldn’t grasp the concept. Homo Sapiens were on their way to extinction.
Of course, when things can’t possibly get any worse, they must get better. A forgotten space station was returning to Earth, and with it, the two things Humanity needed: a young genius and his surviving laptop.
Dante Fanta became the world’s only hope. And shortly after that, he became a hero. Fanta brought back technology.
He recreated the Internet.
Everything went uphill pretty fast after that. In a decade, technology was restored to its former glory. But with harsher conditions, Humans needed something better than before. Another decade flew by, and suddenly, we had the futuristic world we had always dreams about.
Everything was connected to the DFnet or Det for short. The Det was a super-powered, wireless network powered by the Sun itself. Old model computers were extinct. Everything was on laptops now. Television was a solid 50 channels, and radio no longer existed. Houses were built like apartment buildings, with a ‘house’ being a single floor. Everything outside was pulled in. Cars became thicker, and more like limousines on the inside. The currency was Credits, kept on a Flash Card, which was everything to a person – their keys, wallet, identification; the works.
Economy was restored, almost overnight. But suddenly, the population was divided. Families with money became powerful, and those without were thrown out of higher society and treated like trash.
There were the Nobles, which spent their days owning companies and throwing extravagant parties. They were the majority of people, who had everything they wanted.
Just under them were the Supports, who had decent money and were still considered to be Upper-class. They filled the servicing jobs – waiters, drivers, assistants, workers.
Far below them were the Citizens. They were the Lower-class filth that had no money and little rights. Lower-class people didn’t have a Flash Card and weren’t registered on Det. They traded among themselves, using the Pioneer way instead of money. They were the homeless and the hated.
Society was cut-and-dry. There was no middle ground. You were either Upper- or Lower-class. Either treated with respect and courtesy, or disdain and hatred. They were two entirely different halves of Society.
Russia gave the world another decade to become firmly entrenched in life as it was before taking over. There was no war, no fighting, no invasion at all. They didn’t need one. All they needed was Dante Fanta.
There is still speculation on weather he was forced into working with them, or if he went willingly. But the result was all the mattered. Now Russia had complete control over the Det. They controlled life. Only they weren’t ‘Russia’ anymore. They were Empire.
It didn’t matter much to the Upper-class. Life went on as usual. Nobles and Supports were kept happy and healthy in their place in Society. They became content, compliant, not needing or wanting anything else. Everything relied on routine. But that was fine, because Empire was pleased with the easy, profiting routine.
For the Lower-class, life got worse. It became illegal to go against anyone Upper-class. Illegal to speak your mind, to act out against Empire or Society. Illegal to be seen anywhere after dark, regardless that they had no home to go back to. It was impossible to form any kind of resistance against Society. Technology was just too developed. A meeting of too many people would bring Enforcers swooping down to disperse the gathering with gunfire. Citizens rebelled, still, but there was no organized force behind it.
Just as technology was refined, weapons were evolving. Most guns relied on a battery, shooting a small, condensed bust of energy instead of a projectile. People no longer bled to death after being shot – the energy bolts burned, cauterizing the wound closed. It kept the fights more sanitary.
Following the improvement of weaponry came Empire’s new police force. Preventers. Police were still used, but they stayed with problems within the Upper-class. Preventers dealt with Citizens. In their striking, black and white uniforms, they were the fear of every Citizen. They had the power to kill on a whim.
Dante Fanta was getting older now. He had taken technology as far as he could, but Empire was still pressing him for weapons. They wanted something all-powerful. In response, Fanta barricaded himself away for ten years. On the tenth year, he committed suicide and left the Empire with ten amazing weapons.
What made them so amazing was that there were so many unknowns. Fanta called them ‘Danta’s. Each Danta was known as a number – 0 through 9. They were, as promised, the ultimate weapons. The only problem was that Empire didn’t know how to work them. They seemed like ordinary vehicles; cars, motorcycles, ATV’s and others. Each one had a different color scheme, granted, and they seemed indestructible, yes, but they were not the weapons that Empire had been expecting.
The Dantas were thrown away, given to the Nobles who used them for showpieces. They were rather useless, after all, and Fanta had destroyed all of his notes and preliminary work. The Empire forgot about them after a few years.
That is, until a Preventer came across a Danta unlocked its secret. They were weapons. They could transform. The Empire tried to take one apart, but it was impossible. There were no screws or bolts holding it together. Each piece of metal was seamlessly connected. The only thing needed to control it was a human will. There was something in the Dantas that acted as a heart; that connected with the human mind. They started calling it the Oblivion Drive.
But knowing that didn’t help them much. Most of the Dantas were long gone, transferred between so many people they had become untraceable. To the ordinary eye, they seemed like normal vehicles, which made it even harder to recognize them. There was also the small problem concerning the Oblivion Drive. It chose only one person to connect with. No one other than that person could fully use that Danta. They were called ‘Zero’s. The Fanta was a single digit number, and once they were confirmed to have a Zero, a zero was added to their number accordingly. Fanta 1 was the first, and 01 was also the first.
A new section of Preventers was created. Sweepers. A couple of them were Zeroes. Their sole job was to track down and retrieve the scattered Dantas and their Zero, if they could be found, to force them into Empire service. Sweepers were the Empire’s right hand. Their authority was only second to the Empire’s. It was against the law to deny Sweepers anything. It was illegal to oppose them in any way, and breaking any law was punishable by death.
Citizens thrived on breaking the law, consequences be damned, and this was no exception.
