1: Invasion

Colonel Ian Marcella ignored the thundering of the 500mm long range strike cannons stationed on the hill and tried to concentrate on his mapping computer. The Zeonic Marines beachhead was growing rapidly, too rapidly, forcing his small detachment of 3 companies of RGM-172G defender GM types back even closer to the mountains bordering the western edge of his island. He ordered third company’s 1st team to deploy from the reserve area and hammer the invading Zeon fleet’s beach head from the left, and then he ordered the 2nd of the 3rd to hit their right, and the 3rd of the 3rd to hang back and unleash their rockets on the still soft rear of the beach head where landing craft were emptying more Zaku island invader types.

Sergeant Mike Vane checked the drum of ammo mounted on top of his 120mm machine gun for the 50th time, out of nervousness. He watched as three GM defenders popped up from the hill to his left and unleashed a massive spread of rockets, each one striking beached landing craft, sending chunks of Zaku and landing craft flying through the air. A chunk that looked like the engine of a LSMS slammed into the deck of his ship; witch was waiting for a clear spot to land.

Lieutenant Kai Vale sat in his new RX-182G Assault Type Gundam, the four data screens in front of him blinked to life, and the rest of the Gauges and displays soon followed. The top left screen showed the Tactical Situation Monitor or TACSYS, the top right one powered up showing the Radar. The lower left touch screen opened to the weapons status and selection screen. The one to his right powered up, but did not display anything because it’s the video communications screen. The HUD and targeting systems appeared next, showing navigation data and other such critical data.
Back at the island, Colonel Marcella ordered a sniper to attempt to hit their command ship, but the sniper was struck down by a team of Zakus. He was getting desperate, he ordered his support teams back, to right in front of the command center, and told them to rake the beaches with machine gun fire, in an attempt to lay down a barrage that would scare off any intruders.

Sergeant Vane’s displays showed nothing but static as his LSMS exploded around him, and killed most of the team he was supposed to land on the island. When the static cleared up, he realized he was under water, and out of the line of fire. He forced the older Zaku to move in the direction of the beach; silently thanking the designers for including water seals around all of the joints. He watched as a new Zaku sank down into the mud under the beach, its legs buckling as the added weight of a flooded upper body forced the MS into the rocky bottom.
Lieutenant Vale watched as both of his Gundam Cannons docked their shoulder mounted 137mm cannons and 90mm forearm mounted chain guns. Both units reached to their right in unison, grabbing on to their 120mm support machine guns. His own unit was automatically loading its weapons two, the twin 90mm machine guns mounted on the left forearm beneath the shield turned green on the status panel, followed by the 100mm assault rifle, standard beam rifle, which docked to the skirt armor and 90mm shotgun, which mounted to his left hip. The backpack for his unit lowered on to his back, locking with a loud clank. the pack was not the same as the pack used on the original ground type Gundam, inside it was more than spare clips, because he was an assault pilot, his pack, it allowed him to function with Airborne units, with the parachute stored in a detachable canister on the top of the pack. It also allowed him to work with marine MS corps, with detachable hydro thrusters and an underwater beam rifle. All of these refinements and changes from the original, but one thing did not change, he still did not have that CIWS gun system mounted in his head, and instead a periscope was mounted in the place where it should be. The chest machine gun and multi launcher were still the same, and so was the rest of the unit except for the left arm and upgraded systems. His fourth team member was in a unit similar to his, except his lacked both the shot gun and 100mm assault rifle; they were replaced by a massive 145mm sniper rifle.

Marcella looked at his computer as a series of new messages popped up. The first informed him that satellite reconnaissance had detected that the forces he was fighting now were the only ones he would have to deal with. The second one told him that the 3rd of the 2nd had just been whipped out, their last MS getting sunk in the bay, but it took six Zakus down with it. The final three messages would never be read; the top of the hill was blown apart by no less than 27 Dragon Bunker Buster Missiles.

Vane was tossed around in his unit by the explosions up on the island, his mobile suit’s integrity panel started to flash, signifying water leakage in the left leg, left shoulder and left side of the torso. Vane screamed in rage as his team status panel showed that his close friend, Stephen Sevens was blown to pieces by a GM. He mashed the pedals, activating all of the thrusters. He blasted out of 30 feet of water, and lined up on the beach, blasting forwards it until the he had exhausted his jets, and much to his dismay, it would take at least two minutes before he could re use them normally again and he was still far away from the island and in 15 feet of water, which was not helping his left leg at all, and the bottom of the cockpit was beginning to lose its integrity. Waves from an approaching storm washed water up his thruster nozzles, wetting the ignition system; witch did not help the status of his MS.

Captain Harry Cleaver of the first company took charge of the battalion as per the backup plan. He formulated a quick plan that with a little luck would collapse the Zeek’s shrinking beach head. Third company’s first team was to hit the left front flank; team 3.2 was to hit the left rear flank. Teams 3.3 and 2.2 were to drop down off the cliff to the left, landing in the center of the beach head, and cut down the fragile landing craft as they landed. The remnants of team 2.1, the sniper team was to dig in atop the hill next to the one where the command center and artillery guns were, and snipe at the landing craft, command MS’s and if any were in range the support ships that were launching the LSMS units. His first company’s second and third teams along with the remaining artillery units would wreak havoc on the front flank. His unit, the detachment’s strike team would launch hit and run strikes along the right flank.

LT. Vale watched as the time to target counter above the drop hatch clicked down to 5 minutes left. He ran last checks on his unit, and opened up the switch cover to his left, which was the one switch he hoped he would not have to hit.

Sergeant Vane watched as two full teams of GM’s landed on the beach, and started blowing away landing craft to his left and right. Cursing he mashed the trigger for the 120mm machine gun, watching as streams of yellow tracers reached out and caressed one of the GM’s. The GM spotted him, and returned fire, a pink lance of light pierced the night, but landed just behind him, sending up a plume of spray, and creating a massive shock wave through the water. He cursed as the shock wave caused the seal around his left ankle to blow, flooding the leg with sea water and shorting out the foot control wiring. He fired again, and hit the GM again, but the 120mm shells did little damage, and most landed in the sand around it, obscuring his view which caused him to waste most of that burst on the sand to the right of the GM. Another pink lance was fired in his direction, but it flew over his head, and struck one of the big transport ships.

Commander Kino watched in horror as the pink blade pierced his ship’s forward hanger. The soft composite structure of the hull warped and melted from the beam’s intense heat. The shot melted through the ship’s main transverse bulkhead, which provided the bows f the ship their structural integrity. The sudden violent loss of support, coupled with several thousand tons of mobile suits waiting to be deployed on the main deck caused the forward half of the ship to collapse. One older Zaku F type fell right on the ship’s keel and broke her back. The bow snapped free and gouged through the underside of the ship’s hull sending her to the bottom with all hands.

Back on the beach, Sergeant Valerie Icarus cursed at the Zaku she was shooting at; she could not hit it, not with the night vision on. The damn thing had blown off her shoulder armor on her left arm, and had gouged out some nasty furrows through the chest and waist. In a move of what she thought was brilliance, she disabled the night vision, and activated the advanced targeting system, which deactivated the night vision system, but it allowed for the use of the 10X scope mounted on the rifle, and it allowed the new advanced imaging systems to activate, which made up for the night vision’s loss. She brought the rifle up, and aimed for its cockpit, depressed the trigger, and waited.
