Kimbley's Escape

Kimbley had spent enough time in prison to know he would be missed once he made his escape.

He would have blasted a hole in the wall a long time ago if his hands hadn’t been trapped inside that damn board…But thanks to Greed, who had made quick work of the simple wooden board, he was quickly free to blow up as many walls as he wanted. To his disappointment, there was only one wall between him and freedom, which was gone in an instant.

Ah, freedom…he thought to himself as he took his first breath of fresh air in over a year. He grinned at the sound of multiple alarms suddenly waking everyone on the compound from their dreaming and then laughed. “Catch me if you can.”

Mustang got the call the next morning and greeted the news with worry. Other than the fact that he had escaped from the maximum-security prison in which he was being held, no one could offer him any other news. “I thought you might like to know…” the voice on the other end of the line said after a moment of silence. “Would you like me to do anything, sir?”

“He’s not someone to be handled lightly.” Mustang said, tapping his fingers on the surface of his desk. “Kimbley is a very talented alchemist and should be dealt with by one. I’ll see if there’s any chance of sending Fullmetal his way.”

“We’ve been trying to reach Mr. Elric for some time but we haven’t been able to locate him.”

He sighed in frustration. What was that boy up to now? “Alright then. I’ll get on the case myself.” He said and hung up the phone. The moment he returned the phone to its place the door to his office burst open and Riza stepped in, looking uncharacteristically pale.

“Sir!” she started, suddenly remembering how a subordinate was supposed to address her superior.

“I know.” He replied avoiding her eyes. “I just got off the phone with the investigations department.”

“I see. Are you going then?”
He shrugged. “Name someone else who can match his skills and can be found when needed and
I’ll gladly send them.”

“You’d better not go alone, then. I’ll come with you.” He looked up, surprised that she had volunteered to accompany him on such a mission.

“Riza…”

“You’ll be useless if you get wet.”

The clues led them to an abandoned warehouse on what was once military property. Mustang hadn’t expected him to stay so close to the area but, with all the people searching for him, there was no way he could get out of Central in the daylight. The temperature seemed colder inside the building than outside. Hawkeye felt herself shivering and wondered if it was completely because of the cold.

When she heard that Kimbley had escaped and guessed that Mustang would be going after him, she felt like she needed to confront him. She needed to come face to face with her attacker. She couldn’t explain why but it seemed important. Perhaps if she could face him, she’d be one step closer to moving on with her life.

The only sound in the warehouse was the sound of their shoes moving quietly against the pavement and the sound of her heart beating in her own ears.
They came to a large room, littered with stacks of crates and boxes. Hakkai gripped her gun tighter backed up against a stack next to Roy. She looked at his face. Outwardly, he seemed focused and calm but she wondered if he was thinking about she and Kimbley together. Or did he hate Kimbley along with her? Was he jealous? Angry? He motioned for her to go around the left side of the stack and that he would come around the right side. She nodded and the two of them moved quickly to the other side.

What if he was there? She wondered as she moved. Waiting for them, ready to explode them both or worse… Just Roy? He was the only one she felt like she could trust. If anything happened to him, she wondered what would become of her. The both of them appeared on the other side of the stack next to each other, not another soul in sight.

Mustang inwardly breathed a sigh of relief. He probably wasn’t even anywhere in that warehouse. From somewhere close by there was the sound of flesh making contact with some unidentified material. Instinct drove Mustang to grab Hawkeye and pull her to the ground. Before he knew what was going on, he suddenly felt surrounded by intense heat. He looked to his right to make sure Hawkeye was alright but found that she wasn’t there. A shadow appeared over him and he looked up with blurring eyes. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Kimbley’s unmistakable grin.
